Kätchen Emma Sophie Schmidt , also known as Kitty Schmidt, was born on the 25th of June 1882 in Hamburg, then part of the German Empire. As a young woman Kitty went to England to work as a piano teacher and whilst there she met a Spanish consul named Zammit whom she married but who later shot himself. After the suicide of her husband, she remained in the UK and in October 1906 her illegitimate daughter Kathleen was born in Cardiff. When the First World War ended on 11 November 1918 Schmidt moved with her daughter to Berlin and in 1922 opened her first commercial "salon". The main purpose of her newly opened business venture was to provide companionship and intimacy to its clients.
On 30 January 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany by President Paul von Hindenburg. Soon after their assumption of power, the Nazi leaders began to make good on their pledge to persecute German Jews.
