KiwiRail's North Auckland Line Trains (HD)

On the 24th & 25th of November, we caught some of KiwiRail's North Auckland Line Freight Services. This time round the L1 shunt duties were hauled by DC4790 and 120/129 duties hauled by DFB7160, DFB7158.
We started off by Chasing Train 120 from Wellsford to Whangarei, we then headed over to Kamo, Whangarei to catch DC4790 putting on a show with Train L1C heading up to the Kauri Dairy Factory. After, we chased it back down from Kauri to Kamo, Whangarei again, and then caught it running to Northport and back on the Port Whangarei Branch.
Also, thanks heaps to Ramon (a Whangarei Shunter) for the chats at Kauri & Whangarei Yards! Really apricate it!

Im glad the DCs are still operating (especially 4790 and 4260), Kiwirail is getting rid of them :(

Really nice. If only Winston had been voted back in…….Mallard canned northland rail spend after nz first was ousted.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I used to live in Mangapai, right by the bridge and could watch the trains come up from the coast. The line North of Kauri and the branch to Dargaville were still operating, sort of, with ancient 2-axle open wagons loaded with logs. At the Portland siding there were 2 small shunters parked, owned by "Forest Loaders". All history now. When you see the trains crawling along, the steel screaming in the tight bends, you start to understand why none of this can ever be economical. It takes the Swiss to properly run a metre-gauge rail network, in the Alps and making a profit.

Cheers! I would have loved to have captured the Otiria Log Trains and Dargaville Log Trains while they were still running!

There is no comparison between Swiss metre gauge and NZ trains. Our population is a bit over 5 million. Switzerland is roughly in the middle of Europe which has a population of just over 741 million. A lot of tourists to pull in to use the trains. Getting NZer’s out of their cars even where there is a good public transport is nearly impossible. And KiwiRail don’t exactly help when new customers come along, often they just don’t have the capacity as there has been a lack of investment over many, many decades.
