KK Downing Interview on Judas Priest, new album, Iron Maiden, Al Atkins & more

Күн бұрынIn this interview episode the legendary KK Downing - the guitar player and the co-founder of Judas Priest and KK's Priest speaks about the new KK's Priest album Sermons of the Sinner and how was it writing an entire album by himself, without Glenn Tipton and Rob Halford. KK Downing also discusses how he felt after he left Judas Priest, what kept him busy during the past decade and wether he has any regrets for leaving Judas Priest back in 2011.
KK Downing also shares his thoughts on David Ellefson and wether he ever invited him to join KK's Priest, as well as how KK decided to invite Tony Newton to the band, who has previously played together with Richie Faulkner in Deeds and Voodoo Six. In addition KK Downing talks about rivalry between the Heavy Metal bands, mainly talking about Iron Maiden, Steve Harris and Paul Di'Anno, and opens up about wether he would accept the invitation for KK's Priest to share the stage with Iron Maiden at some point. While speaking about live tours with KK's Priest KK also talks about Les Binks and wether the fans can expect Al Atkins (Judas Priest's first vocalist) to perform with the band live.
KK also reflects on his career in Heavy Metal and shares some of the funniest stories which happened to him with Judas Priest on tour during his 50-year-long career. And of course, remembers the favourite riffs and solos he's written during this time.

Hearing KK's Priest bring me back to the times of Defenders of the Faith. Not exactely of course..but like hearing that missing ingredient of JP. It sounds like welcoming back an old friend (meaning that part of JP I missed hearing and havent got from current JP) Love it!

I already ordered the limited edition signed metal LP. I love what I've heard so far: "Hellfire Thunderbolt" and "Sermons of the Sinner". Ken has always been my favourite member of Judas Priest, due to his energy, passion and enthusiasm. I'm looking forward to the album, which will be great just based on the two songs I've already heard.

I still remember in 8th grade back in 2014 when I first listened to Judas Priest. Electric Eye came on while I was sitting in class and little did I know, that song would open a whole world to me.

KK is a legend of legends! He is Judas Priest in my book. He cannot or will never be replaced. No disrespect at all to Richie because he is spectacular. Judas Priest will always be Rob -KK - Glenn - Ian and Scott in my opinion. Priest will never have the same "Firepower" without KK & Glenn and their twin guitar attack. There will never be any substitute for that supreme team of legendary metal - period! Enough said.

When I chose Heavy Metal as my genre of music, I knew in my heart that all of my favourites would be metal until they died and not stop playing it until they just cannot do it anymore physically. Jesus they are all 60-70+ years ood and still banging their heads. Absolutely incredible dedication to their chosen craft.

KK sure is a lively and funny guy (and a legend ofcourse).. exactely the same like he has always been during al those interviews in the 70's-90's. Good to see him in good spirits. Looking forward to all that KK's Priest will bring! Bring on the dual guitar-attack! (AJ also rips it up)

It was a very interesting, but short interview, and also obvious what a gentleman this man is. He never badmouthed anybody, no bitterness, no crap.A great artist through and through with lots of class! Respect! I have his book, now looking forward to the album: if the whole album is going to be like the two tracks released so far, then it could easily be considered as one of the best metal releases from 2021. He is one of the architects of the legendary Judas Priest sound so nobody can take that away from him or doubt his competence. K K Downing is a Defender of the Faith...I hope they get some dates with Al Atkins, who is also an excellent guy (loved his Atkins-May Project stuff!)

@@omniken66 I think you have been caught up in all the click-bait headlines. Besides some minor critisisms KK has always been very respectfull talking about his former bandmembers and just wants to set te record straight. Even in his book he talks fondly about them. Yes he lays some blame with Glen and management but at the same time reflects on what he could have done better himself. To me KK is the only straight-talking guy of JP. (Considering every JP member including KK is very secretive bunch)

On "favorite child", I really really love what he did on 'Judas Rising', live from that time you could see KK having a blast playing it. Never again we'll have a duo like KK/Glenn both bringing something magical

I think they have equal or more value to offer than JP at the moment and deserve the same venues of playing. KK'priest songs, check. JP songs: check. JP Ripper era songs: check. Hight pitched vocals: check. Dual guitar leads: check. KK Downing: check.

KK, when you were out of JP, my desire to ever see the band live just evaporated, because it didn't feel the real band anymore. When Glenn had to retire and you weren't called back to save the band, it simply astound me, and seemed to me to come from stubborness and blindness. JP was never JP without you and Glenn in the front. You guys are a guitar duo legend, and guitar playing legends each. Not often I hear Blood Red Skies mentioned, which for one, it puzzles me, because this is one of JP's epic masterpieces. And the fact it was never recorded played live by the full real Priests, is a riddle. I'd be delighted to see you play it. It would be a dream comes true. Wish you all the best. Love from 🇮🇱

@@omniken66 Actually no, everything KK has said has been very consistent and mostly backed up by Robs book as well. Furthermore it's always KK aswering questions and most of JP dodging them. Calling someone a liar without delivering proof just makes your words meaningless.

@@basroemer6764 They aren't "dodging" questions. Maybe just maybe they're past this now...the more and more KK makes mention to it..the more it takes away from what he's doing now and cheapens it. The more it makes him sound like he's holding a deep resentful grudge. I remember when Queensryche tossed out Geoff Tate and it went on for a couple of years and now it's over. Unfortunately KK hasn't come to the realization that regardless of what party is right or wrong...he's gotta bring it to a close already and move on.....his time with Priest is no more. More than likely the Next Priest album will be their last...and the tour will run its course and they'll celebrate the 50 years and wrap it up.. KK has a band now....if Priest said come back for the tour is he just suppose to say sorry guys it's been fun???? Both sides were right and wrong....don't make it sound like KK was some kind of victim......he wasn't!

@@omniken66, it's not about who's the victim and who's right. KK says that if the offer came from JP he would come back. That's it. So why not?! He is one leg in the 3-legged essence called Judas Priest. Having lost Glenn, his coming back would mean saving the band (the band's undisputadly nucleous of the guitar section which makes JP -> well, JP), AND making more genuine new JP material, a viable thing.

If I had to choose a favorite KK lead break, it would have to be his solo on Out in The Cold. The phrasing, and approach was within the flow of the song, yet ended aggressively to build up toward Glenn's break. I realize there are tons of other KK Downing solos that can be held in contention, but that one was how I would have done it. Painkiller is also an amazing example of his prowess no matter the tempo of the song. Well done.

I remember seeing Priest with KK on their Priest Feast tour live. Poor KK slipped on stage during song break. Well, Testament played before and Chuck Billy spit on stage like a freaking lama so I assume he slipped on his snot -.-

would have loved KK with Faulkner in Priest. Faulkner would learn Glenn's parts in an afternoon (the ones he's not playing live already). And as a writing team Faulkner-Rob-KK-Glenn could have been either magic or just too many cooks and too much talent to get along.... But I'll gladly take KK's Priest as a consolation.

I am extremely happy that KK is back where he belongs. I preordered KK's Priest Sermons Of The Sinner the day it was availablea . I do like the first single Hellfire Thunderbolt alot, but I love the second single Sermons Of The Sinner way more. It is a MASTERPIECE in my opinion. KK is an extremely important figure when it comes to Heavy Metal music. I do still think it is a huge mistake for Judas Priest not taking KK back. The 50th anniversary tour that Judas Priest is about to do would have been way more special if KK was part of it. It would have been awesome to see Richie Faulkner and KK playing together since Glenn Tipton can't do it due to his Parkinson's.

@@hugolafhugolaf He didnt retire and has been trying to set the record straight on that since 2011. He quit the band under the premise that is was their last tour before the whole band was going to retire. Btw Rob also quit the band for a very long period. And the ironic part is that one of the first persons Rob talked to about returning was KK. Shame Rob can't or won't return the favor.

I always preferred KK over Glenn and in hearing these KK's Priest songs, I hear so much of KK's sound and I've realized how much he actually brough to Priest.

I saw maiden support priest at the Rainbow theatre in north london around 1980. What a great gig it was. Rob halford dropped his trousers on stage and Paul Dianno was brilliant singing with maiden that night. Both bands were red hot on top form. What a great night. Another rock gig i remember was van halen on their first tour at hammy odeon and Hawkwind with ginger Baker on drums. That was great, ginger really was at another level with the sticks, a bit like Neal Peart or Simon Phillips.

Judas Priest, KK's Priest ... the one thing I know for sure, is you can never have enough Priest :) The new album is fantastic, and I will gladly say my favorite singer is neither Rob nor Tim... It's both Glad this band exists and I sincerely hope they enjoy playing as much as we enjoy listening! EDIT: Can't agree more, KK Rules!!!

KK & Ian started a band called Freight which was later renamed Judas Priest after singer Al Atkins joined. Judas Priest was the bandname of Atkins dissolved previous band, which accidentally KK also auditioned for before starting Freight.

I wonder if they nevertheless have a good relationship. Because he left the band (maybe the record company forced them to bring Richie Falckner in). But they have a life outside their bands as well.

K.K.'s Priest is putting out the best new metal I have heard since Jason Newsted released his album; too bad he disappeared from the metal genre.

@@mysterions13 Actually there nothing worse when playing in a band when one of your band mate doesnt play in time. Glens playing on the Epitaph tour wasnt great btw. Of course we all didnt know about his condition. Rob in his book also mentions the decline of the performance and how KK was frustrated by it. So its all not a suprise for the band, just KK stating the facts at that time.

Thats the difference between Ken and Rob and the other former JP members, he doesn’t talk about the bush and speaks plain text! ok it's a shame that they can't find each other anymore, but now we have 2 judas priest, which is also good. But let's be honest, without Ritchie, JP has not existed for a long time. As a songwriter and live performer, he keeps JP alive. And that's the difference to KKS Priest, the new songs sound more like JP than the last two JP albums, which I found good by the way. Just like the live performance of KKS Band, no comparison to the lame JP performance of the last 15 years.

No, KK's new songs don't "sound more like JP than the last two JP albums". To me they sound like a mix between Ripper era Priest and Halford's "Fight".

@@matsemoto5301 Different ears hear different things I guess. But I would disagree. Jugulator/Demolition/Fight were very much influenced by 'then' modern metal like the trash and groove metal of the 90's. The songs Kk's Priest put out sound like classic metal aka Priest or better said it sounds like KK Downing.

If memory serves KK invested heavily in a few companies/property (golf related I think?) which didn't do too well which I suspect why he returned to the music business. Trouble is too much mud has been thrown by both sides for a reconcilliation. I suspect there may be more that took place with his departure than we have been told which we'll never know.

So it sounds like Tim didn't get to contribute to the writing process for KKs Priest, just like he didn't for Jugulator/Demolition. Hopefully that was just the nature of how this developed and next time round he'll be involved in the writing process, the dude deserves it.

Kk is the most famous and original heavy metal pioneers from the UK and Eddie Van Halen is the main man in usa metal. I followed them from my early teenage years at school in the mid 1970s. With Ripper they have it all to be as good as before with priest as he wrote the riffs etc and Ripper has a great voice but how do you replace Rob or Ozzy as its their identity that makes priest and sabbath.

@14:15 I don't understand KK's dissing of Iron Maiden in the book. He also mention in the book that he wasn't following the magazines of that present day, or what the impact in the field was at that time, thoughts of the fans etc. (read about Point of Entry in the book - he mentions this). They thought it was a great album (they must av fallen off track completely - running for parties. Also mentioned by the way). Back to the Maiden thing. Bruce Dickinson only said good things about Judas Priest (which I also think KK hasn't been aware of). Bruce once said "Judas Priest released an awesome album in 1982, Screaming for Vengeance". It's sad to hear in the book that Screaming for Vengeance didn't sell much. I had to check this up, and it is true. As song writers in their caliber they deserved better.

At the time (Iron Maiden wih Paul Di'Anno) was offered a supportslot. But they were a bit rude and unapriciative on the road. KK has said numerous times (also in the book) that this is water under the bridge as it was so long a go, he even talked and laughed about it with DiAnno some years later.

@@basroemer6764 I read it all. I was talking about 1982 when they went on tour with Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast. Bruce has only good things to say about Judas Priest. I met Di'Anno too. Had some beers with him backstage after a show (in a small club), around 2008. He's still a prick, halting on one leg, weight out of control, drinking whiskey (before the show in the bar), and he can't sing anymore (he makes these 1993-growls on every song, that grunge-singing crap). Sad to see him fall apart like that, as he delivered two fantastic records with Iron Maiden, and had a extremely distinct nice voice (e.g. Prodigal Son, especially, and many others of course). On that particular concert in 2008, though, if he relaxed and focused, you'd hear that voice again (in between), instead he did this pathetic screaming and growling, stressing away. "Killers" is most probably, in my opinion, one of their best records.

@@rabarebra pretty sad story for sure.....the guy brought all of this on himself from what I understand. I've had friends blow their careers for many reasons, but attitude was always the root cause.

I've read KKs book and Rob's book. What inglesnwd from those books is that Kk continually whined and cried aboiht everything.. I get the impression that they were all relieved when he quit. That's why they wouldn't allow him back in... Besides Ritchie is a much better player and easier to get along with... There I said it...
