RM italy kl 503 amplifier output test. 30 amp draw for full 250 watt am output 9 rm3 mofset transistors.

I have been using mine for only a short time now., and I have used linear amplifiers in the past on SSB and 11 meter. Currently it runs my Uniden very well and I can talk all over North America in the early evening when skip is best. I really think this is a great radio amp, but let me stress...keep the input down. That means below 10 watts (Amp can take 30 watts) and in fact I run mine below 5 watts. Output from the RM Italy KL-503 was 80 watts dead key on max power (6 setting) and modulated up to 190 watts. I also had my Standing Wave Ratio to 1.1 Then I turned it on...I had half of the country keying back to me on the first time I used it! 301 in Southern Arizona 10-7.....Sevens and Threes!

The nice meter AWM-30 has the sample hold circuit to make it fast enough to read true PEP. 100% modulated AM has PEP 4 times higher than the carrier power (twice the voltage). If you drive into compression (distortion) you will not se the 4 times increace in PEP while modulating 100%. Here it looks like you are well into compression. Real clean AM power on this amp is maybe 40 Watts to have real 100% AM and only if you can get 160 W PEP from the 40W carrier. Just for your information. Good luck.

Before I forget, the receiver preamp is noisy and there is a mod out there where you change a few diodes along with the preamp transistor and you will get a much need and a much better S/N ratio if you use the receive amp.

I have an amateur (ham) license, but living in the UK and being restricted to 400w PEP is a good reason for buying or making an amplifier. If you've ever been involved in a dx pile-up and only being able to use 100w (200 pep) you'll know an amp that will double your output is a real benefit to even a licensed operator.

The unit draws up to 34 amps, so a little larger supply will give you more.

What gauge wire are you using for the amp? Also, how are the wires attached to that green plug on the back? I saw a video where some guy said "You just screw the wires in the plug" but the unit I got has some weird looking screw heads. I don't have any kind of tool that'll work to remove the plug, attach wires and then reinstall the plug.

These are decent little amps for the buck. I have one that I use on my base and I do have a filter on it's output too. I found that these amps talk really clear if you only drive them with 1 or 1.5 watts. I get a very clean modulation that's not muffled. Mine is one of the older amps that uses the transistors instead of the mosfets. I'm cooling mine the same way so I got a laugh out of your fan! Before I forget, raise your fan with a few long screws. It will help cool it more evenly.

kl 203 is a good amp will last forever for the money just watch your input power from your transceiver i have had a few they sound great on the air

I use one of these for hilltopping & they're good amps but I only get to use the amp for 2 hours each session because it drains my battery bank so fast.Also so many breakers destroy them by putting to much power in to the input.

Very true about dirty in, dirty out etc. I just watched the video again and noticed the low SWR reading, were you transmitting into a dummy load or an antenna ? ... and on what frequency ? What is the lowest frequency band you've used this amp on, seriously thinking about getting one .

Hi Mike H , what frequency you use for this video ? what mode ? AM/FM/SSB ? Have you test in SSB( LSB ) mode ? can you test it in 7 Mhz..?

these amps have great sound depending on how much watts you are driving it with dirty in is dirty out! this kl 503 is a low drive amp i wouldn't drive more than 5 watts from the transceiver.

Hello, Can you make test on SSB ? I have the same amplifier and I have one problem.... 300Watt on AM/FM (input PWR - 5Watt) but on SSB power is only max 250Watt...

I bought a $65 KL 203 a few months ago, and the thing seems to work very well, although I have yet to hear it myself. It get good reports, and I can't believe how inexpensive they are. Within hours of wiring it up and making a few 1000 mile contacts from my mobile, I wanted one of these larger KL 503 amps. I really like the variable power option.

low swr is from the antenna no dummy load the tuner helps but didn't need the tuner antenna is a 1.3 match.

15 to 30 amps is the power supply you need forget about watts when trying to figure out power supply's 30 amps is ideal for this amplifier hope this helps you.

My Rm.kl 506 drawers 33 amps maximum on ssb ... and 32 amps on fm . linear will do a maximum of 300 Watts on FM and slightly over 600 pep. does get very warm if you use it on FM constantly

Hi there I have just bought the same amp what power supply are you using as I have asked three different company's and they have all told me different one told me 15w another 30w an another 50!? Totally confused as I'm just getting into cb radios and don't know a lot. Hope you can help

kl 503 30 amp ate 14dc power supply,. input on am 1/8watt,.will keap it running for a vary long time,.

realistic base don't remember the model its a old one 1977 3 watts with 100% mod

yes 30 amps is good you can use 15 amp minimum you wont get the output than you will at 30 amp.

The real test is how it sounds to the listener and/or neighbours TV sets lol. All this video shows is the power output, proving nothing about it's radiated efficiency and IMD products. I'm looking for something similar myself (max SSB around 400w PEP) to use on the ham bands 80m-10m, but i don't want an amplifier that throws out spurious emissions, where fellow operators can hear me 10khz either side of my transmission frequency. Beware this is not made for CB it is illegal to use this amp on CB @ Regulations and part 95 rules states you must follow the required band plan for HF this is 28300 - 29200 and you must have a FCC Licences of a Tech Genreal or Extra Class licences Fines can range up to 10K or as much as 20K per day that you are found using this off the required bands .. Just a friendly warning Beware unless you can pay the fine you can check with the FCC for more information...KG5CUO

As for the amp I was looking for something for 10 meters and 2 meters and I think there a good option but I am looking for at least 400 to 800 watts on 2 and 10 and 6 and this company is ok they have a good rep for there amps but also there is a list of accepted amps the fcc will allow because of the dirty signals. As for the clowns Skipping yeah I here them but so does the FCC its just a matter of time for them they have the tech to pin point your location on 11 meters or the CB band even Upper and Lower So yeah does not amaze me to here them pushing but sometimes you can get some very long distance on low power 5 to 10 watts like when they have solar storms I have seen it done with as low as 10 watts reaching thousands of miles but they do not stay strong they fade away as the day turns to evening hours depends really on atmosphere and how charged it is I have seen it last days weeks and even months then one day it closes so really depends on the conditions. its the bleeding that they take most concern with as it can interfere with the family or business bands walkies are like 0.5 watts max family FRS is up to 5 watts I do believe and I don't know about the business prob no more then needed for the communications.
