It is easier to read them out of circuit or unless your able to bend the legs up with out the potential possibility of damaging them. I use my atlas now to test F E T s but back then I used my analog meter im sure... this is an old video

@@1883GotDown Slight update!! I removed all the MOSFETs. Tested ok.. or at least they all test the same with my meter, and all are read by my transistor tester Did note a poor solder joint on one of them. The original problem is terrible SSB audio output using this amp. FM is acceptable.. just. But SSB sounds almost like it's off frequency or losing something in quality. I've seen people bypass the driver, but unclear what any consequences of this are.

@@1883GotDown Thanks for replying back. I did order a handful of the driver MOSFET's from them because they had an outlet here in the US and they only charged $5 for the transistors. If memory plays correctly I may have tried an IRF540 as the driver which did NOT work. I read somewhere that the IRF540's would work fine for the driver but they were wrong. However they do work fine for the outputs. I only had a bad driver on my amp and the other MOSFETS were absolutely fine and after doing the repair the amp put out exactly what it did the day that I purchased it. I'm using this on my base station and it gives me plenty of power just to cut through noise with. I did a couple of mods to the amp the day that I got it setting it up so that it would key with the radio circuitry instead of the RF so that I didn't have any dropped syllables or words on SSB. What I realized was this amp would have a tendency to go into self oscillation if it was keyed up without a carrier present so I added some extra filtering around the input stage that took care of the problem all together. I've had a lot of use out of this amp with no problems whatsoever. The only reason it failed was because I accidentally overdrove the input testing out a newer high power radio forgetting to cut the power back... My mistake. I only push this amp with about 1.5 Watts and the audio quality is top-shelf crystal clear outputting a very clean 100 watts with good forward modulaton. Before I forget, thanks for replying back about using a 520 as the driver.

@@flash001USA roger roget...good deal buddy. I still have one here for repair and I think this time imma add a 3db or 6db attenuator so it can be ran with a regular single final radio. I'll do some math and figure it out. I have a 4x16x64 to build with IRF520s lol that is going to be nutts man. If I have any issues with it imma just back out cause that is a crazy idea. I have a 4x16 ERF7530 Amp right here on the bench right now. Good luck buddy sorry it took me so long to reply.

Ooooh yeh you really are better off with a Texas Star. These amps are designed for very low input. It is easy to fry the driver. Dont get me wrong they do have there place. I personally like a Texas Star better especially the older version.

Mike Daniels well actually I have a guys amplifier hearing now which is actually the same fella in this video but a different amplifier and that's what he wants me to do is to modify it to be just a high drive amplifier so that will be a guinea pig LOL

@cat radio videogates I bought the 503v, blew the mosfets within 2wks month, I use FM in the UK 🇬🇧, so it needs fixing, I have a Zetagi B300p & kl203 also, not spoilt for choice. 6900n is noq old (6mth's) so might upgrade to a multiband around Christmas time, we'll see. 73's 26-CT-4078 Mcr, England 🇬🇧

@cat radio videogates I have a 30a psu & a 50a (40 continuous), but have looked at the 50&60a psu's, they're around £130 new, so not much, not an essential atm 👍

@cat radio videogates I like the Texas Stars, I thought they was for the US Market, Rm's & Zetagi's are the 2 main European ones I know of. The 203 with 7/8w in does 75w, thats plenty for Europe, maybe I'll add more in the coming months, I have 80ft tree's some 50ft from my shack/room, I plan to use these to my advantage, height + longline + multiband DX/Tx

MrMadjones because the driver transistor is separate from the finals I could tell by the circuit layout that an irf520 would work just fine now if one of the final devices had blown then I would not have been able to do that that would be very dodgy replacing & Final where there's 7 other devices and you do not know what devices they are you understand what I'm saying all I had to do was replace the driver device and an irf520 matched up perfectly there's always more than one device that can work in a circuit or at least were close enough to be used hope that helps you understand a little better I don't never play hit and miss with people's amplifiers that's a big No-No
