2 Main benefits here. 1st - Malaysians who are currently going into Singapore will get a faster ride, cos some of them will switch to the new trains/rail. But those who need to travel further into Singapore after crossing customs will still need to drive. And these form the bulk of those crossing immigration today cos there are very few offices and workplaces around Woodlands and you need to drive into the city centre mostly to work. And you don’t expect these Malaysians to hop onto their own vehicles that are waiting for them after the crossing. So it only benefits those Malaysians who go by foot who are currently using the buses. 2nd - Singaporeans who are going into Malaysia who are inherently cheapskates because they go over to buy ‘cheap’ stuff and actually pushing up the prices of Malaysia will use the train/rails instead of driving. Except this time round, they will be buying even more because now there is a train to help them haul back their loot. This will further exacerbate the expensive cost of living in Malaysia. Over the long term, this rail will benefit Singapore tremendously and tons more because the cheaper labor from Malaysia will still be coming over except faster and in return the Singaporeans will enter Malaysia to kick the Malaysian retail prices up beyond what the local Malaysians can bear. Those who continue to stay in Malaysia especially JB BUT are not working in Singapore will die with priapism.

Malaysia cannot such a project for the next 10 years. we already have double tracked electrified track ready to be opened by 2025. the speed will increase to 140km per hour. the journey time from KL to JB will be reduced to about 4 hours. Especially in holiday season, this will be the fastest as it will avoid jams in the highway.. Singapore should instead construct an electrified double track meter gauge from Woodlands to Tanjong Pagar. This can be connected from JB to the woodlands border by Malaysia. A spur line could go to Jurong and Changi. It can branch from KEMPAS Baru a to sengkang and Changi. It is also possible to build a railway extension from Jurong to Kempas Baru and onwards. I think 4 hours is a reasonable time from KL Sentral to Jurong or Changi with digitized entry cards for all ASEAN citizens and Permanent Residents. Foreigners will go thru immigration at Jurong or Tanjung Pagar or Changi for both countries. If Malaysia and Thailand cooperate to extend the line to Hadyaaii then it can later connect via HSR or seimi HSR to Bangkok, Laos and Kunming.

@@SivalinPuthery yes in the Bigger picture I am FOR the HSR, but short term, Dr M might have considered the loss of jobs for express bus drivers like those Grassland, Five stars tours etc, and those business that benefit from express bus .like the highway rest stops.. and petrol stations along the North South Highway will express drop in business if more ppl take HSR instead of express bus or drive to KL. It will still have bus services but maybe from 100 trips a day buses..maybe it will drop to 60 or so..and less bus trips means less drivers and less customer eating and buying stuff at rest stops. RTS will also impact bus services but not as big of an impact as a SG to KL route. As HSR is high speed it can make a 4 or 5 hrs bus ride to KL drop to 1.5hrs HSR and who won't want to save time. Malaysia can than do the HSR from Johor to KL on their own without the ‘Asset Company’ as originally proposed by Singapore. In this way Malaysia can award the HSR project to any crony companies in any ways as they pleases without Singapore intervention. 😂😂. p.s. Well research video but you guys missed out on a key fact. Singapore wanted equal control of the asset company that will managed the HSR project is simply because; Though the rail run less than 15km in Singapore, Singapore is paying 50% of the TOTAL cost of construction! In fact this arrangement was received with outrage by many in Singapore. The associated economic benefits of having new infrastructure is largely benefitting Malaysia. Singapore is already a well developed country. What Mahathir wanted was for Singapore to pay the bills , share the risks but have the asset controlled by him and his cronies. This is not the first time he tries to play Singapore for the suckers. In fact the subsequent proposals to "go it alone" clearly reflects that. Mahathir wanted a rail controlled by him to be built all the way to Johor which he imagine he can somehow get Singapore to connect. A HSR was never important for Singapore and I am glad we didn't build it, the first version or any subsequent versions.

ETS at 140km/h is far more feasible and cost effective, while its rail is cheaper to maintain and it can be used to transport passengers and cargo. Furthermore, it needs no extra land acquisition. On the other hand, building cost of any mega infrastructure including HSR is always under estimated. Maintaining HSR is costly and the economy spillover effect is exaggerated. We have less extra fund to develop the country if the HSR is leaching our national piggy bank for the next few decades. I hope the decision maker can think throughly before they make decision.

Technically an HSR should link 2 cities non stop and with as direct and as straight an alignment as possible. The old proposed SIN-KL HSR project with many stops along the route will not serve the business travellers need for a fast Singapore to Kuala Lumpur link and it is good that the project was scrapped. What Malaysia needs is not a HSR but an improved twin tracks standard railway system to serve the west peninsula Malaysia hinterlands. Singapore also do not need an HSR that cannot do the HSR cruising speed of at least 300 kmh all the way to KL. So forget this HSR project, don't waste money.

@@jefri4176 What you stated is a "share tracks" system where the slower inter town trains need to move out of the HSR trains into side tracks for the HSR train to pass non stop. @@wmchan44 Like I mentioned in other thread, separate faster train can be from KL -> JB and then, JB -> SG via RTS expected to complete 2026. Once RTS completes, Malaysia can construct/develop a fast train from JB -> KL at say 160 km/hr. HSR sounds cool, but, it's very expensive. There's no point in building something just because it's cool, but, no economical sense. It will be a waste of money and time. Rely on flights, much better.

With the increasing property prices in Singapore and the increasing forex gap between RM and SGD, there will be definitely be some trickle down economic benefits with a fast connect between KL and SG. You saw an immediate take up on JB properties after the RTS project started. The biggest losers might be the airlines operating the numerous KL SG flights now. The biggest obstacle like the video says is the Malaysia government's current state of finances. They just simply don't have the money left after decades of cronyism and corruption. Maybe they can ask Jho Low to 'invest' some of Malaysia's own money back into the project. 😆

Singapore's concerns are well founded. Neither Singapore or Malaysia have experience of constructing and managing such a light rail system, and as partner in a joint venture Singapore was correct to insist upon a transparent, independent entity, the Assets Company, to manage the interests of both parties. Without this independent control Singapore would have no control over the cost and quality of the outcome. Malaysian tax payers should be equally concerned, knowing that the employ of an Assets firm ensures monies are well spent, and all is open to public review. To date this cancelled project has cost Malaysia 100s of millions without benefit. Would such a light rail system benefit Malaysia? Look to the numbers of Singaporeans crossing over for vacations, holidays, short stays. Look to the numbers of tourists visiting Singapore that could cross over for short stays. The answer is obvious.

@@onexoxtoo 2 Main benefits here.
