Towered Airport Diagram - Sectional Chart

Towered airports are a little more complex than non-towered airports, so it's important to know what you are looking for on a sectional. Entering the tower's airspace without all of the proper information and communications is a big deal and may get you in trouble. This lesson will teach you what you need to know to stay safe and legal.
First, we can tell whether the airport has a control tower or not, just by looking at the symbol. A blue symbol indicates that an airport is towered, while a magenta symbol indicates a non-towered airport. For this lesson we are only interested in the towered, blue airports.
When figuring out if the airport is suitable for us to use, the first thing to look at is runway length. An airport with a solid circle and runway depictions inside indicates the longest runway is 1500-8069 feet long. An airport diagram that looks like a runway without a circle around it means that the longest runway is longer than 8069 feet.
Tick marks around the diagram show fuel services and other services are available from at least 10:00am to 4:00pm Monday-Friday. A star at the top of the diagram indicates a rotating beacon. For airports with longer runways, the rotating beacon start will be located about where the rotating beacon is on the airport grounds, and there will be no tick marks. It's pretty safe to assume that a larger airport will have some kind of services, but always consult the airport/facility diagram first.
All other airport information is listed next to the diagram. This includes the airport name, identifier, control tower frequency and CTAF frequency, ATIS/weather frequency, elevation, longest runway length, UNICOM frequency, and other notes. While you can get almost everything you need just from the diagram, it is also important to check the airport/facility directory before you go. This will give you any other local information you need to know.

Some folks are saying they have difficulty hearing. I have no problem with the sound and I'm using a high quality PC. This video was posted in 2014 so I don't know if something was changed or not but it is good for me. Thanks.

Just for clarification, airports not depicted in the circle don’t have to be more that 8069’ if they have multiple runway layout. An example KIGM for one. Your example was LGB which does have a runway over 8069’.

Will. Thanks for doing the work on these videos. They are about as perfect as these videos get in terms of content and style. Not to fast not to slow, excellent focus. My only suggestion is that the audio gain is quite low. I find myself having to turn my volume WAY up to hear you. If you haven't gotten it in process yet, airspace classification seems to be a subject that other content makers have trouble getting across. Given your style, I would be eager to see your attempt at that subject. Once again thank you for your excellent work.

Great video...sometimes its great when you talk slow and calm other times its a little slow i think it depends on the level experience you have or are looking for...i noticed speeding up the video slightly makes it easier to learn and keep your attention...either way thank you so much it really helps. :)

Quick question: @16:10 the chart says AOE= "Airport of entry" but you say it means "U.S. Customes located here" So which one is it?
@av8rshane491
@av8rshane491 2 жыл бұрын
There are 3 types of airports that you can clear customs when entering the US. AOE and you don’t need permission but must give at least 1 hour notice before arrival, second is LRA landing rights airport and you have to have permission from customs to clear there and the third is US Customs user fee airports where there is a fee for services and must be approved in advance. LAX is a LOA airport. My home airport LAS is a LRA and Eagle EGE is a US Customs user fee airport. The last time we cleared customs in ege I think it was around $800 fee for a global 6000. Hope that helps.

I got one quest sir, what does Airport Of Entry stand for?
@Klaviation
@Klaviation 10 жыл бұрын
An airport of entry just means that the airport has customs officials available so flights from international destinations can use it as a first stop in the United States. For domestic flights within the United States it is not essential.
