This episode is a very close match between Benjamin Kleibrink and Race Imboden. Once again featuring special guest Chris Lennon, an international referee. This video features many calls in the middle, and Chris shares a few tricks to help call priority in the middle.
Hope you enjoyed!
Winning this bout in Saint Petersburg sent Kleibrink into the semi finals, winning him a medal. This was his first medal since winning team bronze at the London 2012 Olympics!

10:48 "It's not uncommon to see people kind of do a step to start a lunge holding their hands..." Awww... that's so nice! Fencers holding hands! There's a lot of love on the strip, for sure! 😊

I feel like race relies too much on his point control… and he make mistakes because of that

How can you rely "too much" on point control?? Isn't that the--so to speak--the whole point? I guess maybe you mean he neglected to control the distance, focusing too much on blade work?

Isn't his name pronounced Im-BO-den, not IM-bo-den?

I think you're right, people from different parts of the world would have different impressions when seeing it written down though

@@OlympicFoil Yes, but given Imboden's international stature, surely people would know who he is and how his name is pronounced. You'll notice no one mispronounced "Kleibrink" as "Kleebrink" with a long "e". Obviously, names may be altered in different languages, but how hard is it to stress the correct syllable in a three-syllable name?

@@paules3437 As a german speaker, I can assure you that Kleibrink's name is actually mispronounced far more often than Imboden's 😂 Thank you for your feedback on the video Paul 👍

@@OlympicFoil Ja, das kann ich glauben! My point was not that people's names aren't mispronounced all the time, it was that in this particular video, the syllabic emphasis is so easy to fix, or not to make in the first place. I mean, it's not as if we're asking a non-native English speaker to pronounce a "th-" sound, which is the most difficult in our language. Besides, every time he said "IM-bo-den" I thought he was saying "IM-potent," which rather changes the whole meaning of the phrase! : ) It's no big deal, really; I just wondered why the announcer couldn't hear it. Anyway, it's not as bad as the Swiss marathon runner in the '84 Olympics whose name was Gabriela Andersen-Schiess, whom the American announcers kept calling "Gabriela Andersen-SCHEISS." As a German speaker, you can appreciate the difference. For non-German speakers, her name should be pronounced "Sheese" but the announcers, not knowing the rule about "ie" vs "ei" in German, pronounced "SHICE" with a long "i" (as in "ice.") In German that word is what we English speakers call "The S-word." Fortunately, someone at the network corrected them and they changed their pronunciation. She was the woman who entered the stadium at the end of the marathon clearly suffering from heat stroke or some other condition, and she wove her way around the track, stumbling and veering. No one went to help her because if anyone touched her, she'd be disqualified: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oqiRpr2Iz8qdYp8.html

@@paules3437 oh dear 😅 that is a particularly unfortunate mistake Great video, i'd never seen that before - i can see why it's sort of an olympic classic As for the pronunciation in the commentary I hope it didn't annoy you too much, as far as production value goes this channel is unfortunately on the low end for fencing content
