This latin medley is an incredible display of their technical abilities. Although it wasn't as strikingly dramatic as Bestemianova & Bukin's Carmen program from that year, it's pure ice dance at its best.

This is my favorit Klimova & Ponomarenko program. I watched it live during their exhibition performances for two evenings straight. 23 years later, this is still one of the best programs ever.

God damn they were good. Excellent control of their bodies, clean line with precise and sharp movements, excellent flow. I actually thought they were better than B&B but this was in the era where teams had to wait their turn. I suspect that's one reason they stayed in until 1992.

If the rules back then focused on the technical as much as they do now, Klimova and Ponomorenko would never have lost. At least not after Torvill and Dean retired. I still think they are the greatest ever skaters and definitely greatest ice dancers.

AMAZING , Thank you very much for this. I am a HUGE K&P fan but I have to admit I have never seen anything of their before the 88 Olympics . Even back then no one could top them. The have the smoothest edges and cleanest lines of any ICE DANCING team. This FD is near perfection, just didn't like the side by side splits, it broke the flow too much. Surely they cant still be skating 20+ yrs later ! AGAIN THANK YOU .

@gk891 Yes, it's usually called "Historia de un amor" (Story of a Love) or "Ya no estás más a mi lado, corazón" (You're no longer by my side, my love), for its first line. It's a very popular bolero by Panama composer Carlos Eleta Almarán. He wrote it when his brother's wife died. Search for: LUIS MIGUEL HISTORIA DE UN AMOR con letras en Inglés y Español

Interestingly enough, they had won that year's Soviet nationals over bestemianova/bukin by a 8 to 1 landslide in the free. And it was the international judges that then propped up a clearly shaken b/b at euros and then worlds.
@gk8915 жыл бұрын
I can understand why the international judges like B&B though. They had good power and huge glide. This was especially evident in the compulsories where they traced out their patterns with tremendous confidence and could skate their choctaws amazingly well (whereas the choctaws were often an issue for Klimova & Ponomarenko). I find it frustrating to watch B&B for that reason. Because while their compulsories were awesome, they never really transferred those skills to their free dances. Where K&P really shined were their OSPs and FDs.
@gk8914 жыл бұрын
@@azbycx56 The thing is that the judging in ice dance back then had a lot to do with the compulsories. And B&B often had better compulsories than K&P. Still, I found it frustrating to watch B&B in the OSP and especially the FDs because their amazing skating skills were very rarely on display during those segments of the competition.

@@azbycx56 No. While B&B's compulsories were awesome, T&D's were even better. T&D's compulsories in the early 1980s were truly something to behold.

@@gk891 IMO for compulsories B/B were stronger in the Rhumba than T/D and should have beat them in technical merit, especially if you take into account the key points of today. B/B had much clearer LFI-RBO-LFI choctaws and LFOIO changes of edge. It is particularly noticeable when comparing Bestemianova & Torvill's RBO edge in the choctaw and Bukin & Dean's LFI in the change of edge.

@bridgeoverthestars I think it's called History of Love but I could be wrong about that. Many skaters over the years have used this music like Torvill & Dean, Grishuk & Platov, and Navka & Kostomarov. I'm not sure about the composer though.

How did B/B win? This was amazing!!
@gk8912 жыл бұрын
Yes, an amazing free dance. To their credit, B&B skated what was perhaps their greatest free dance to Carmen. Technically it did not have the content of K&P's free dance but I have to admit that I was glued to the screen when I watched it!
