This major exhibition of Gustav Klimt's (1862-1918) idyllic depictions in the landscape genre features significant paintings made while the artist was on his Sommerfrische (summer holiday) in the Austrian countryside. For the last twenty years of his career, Klimt devoted considerable energy to painting landscapes during his summer vacations on the Attersee in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, known for its tranquil lakes. Created purely for his own pleasure, these bucolic scenes became among his most sought-after pictures and were highly coveted by collectors. Most were made in a square format-a reflection of his fascination with photography.
In this video, exhibition curator Janis Staggs brings you through highlights of "Klimt Landscapes," a special exhibition presented at Neue Galerie New York.

More proof of a traditionally trained artist who found his voice and watch his transition to Abstraction. These need to be seen in person to appreciate his paint and color handling. Klimt breaks so many traditionally acceptable rules of scale, perspective, space, flatness of form, composition and color combination. AND makes his paintings work so beautifully. It is a lesson to painters that painting rules can be broken and wonderful work can still be the result.

I am glad you pointed out Klimt’s journey into abstraction. Because of his classical training of anatomical drawings and paintings, the proportions are always correct and pleasing to the eye. One can always tell if an artist learned his craft and built upon it.

I live in rural Vermont. I have traveled to Wien/Vienna and set flowers on his grave. I am also an Artist and was married in Wien. If there was a contest to win a trip to see this exhibition, not only would I enter it, I'd cheat to win the trip! Best wishes from Vermont ❄️🍁❄️

Thanks for this awesome video. I love the work of Klimt. He is truly one of the greats. I was so curious to hear comment on his landscape paintings, as an artist who is still trying to discern how I want to treat this genre. I love being in nature, & even received answers to prayer to confirm it as a personal direction for my art. It is the practice of art, through the ages, to be inspired by the masters & Klimt is truly an inspiration. I love these landscapes. I've heard it is true, as shown in this video, that all of your art experiences will influence all of your art, even in a different series/ genre. I am so eager to go paint from nature after seeing this.

Beautifully presented exhibition; many thanks for this. Exquisite paintings, and I have learned so much of interest about Klimt and his times, especially during the years prior to WW1, the calm before the storm which brought catastrophe.

In my personal opinion, Klimt's landscapes, especially the ones painted in the latter years of his life, are his best. I guess it's because he painted these masterpieces without a thought to anyone but himself! I hope I'll be able one day to see this exhibition soon, I've only seen a few, at the Leopold in Vienna, which have only whetted my appetite for more.

I don't know if it has been pointed out before, but not that I know of, 4:27 The Rise of Photography and a new devotion to landscapes. In the early days of photography, landscape was a far easier subject to capture on film than a studio model and set-up, which dominated so many earlier canvases. The two forms in co-evolution makes so much sense in so many ways. Thank you for pointing in out.

What do you mean a "safe" satellite gallery? The Neue Gallerie is an independent private museum and has proper security in place. I don't think its permanent collection is not large enough to split into two separate museums.

Fun fact... Austria is named after the ostrich. Österreich is the austrian name for Austria. Ostrich... Österreich... I'm sure that even the simplest among you can see the connection. Fun fact... Austria is also where kangaroos come from. Austria... land of ostriches and kangaroos and koalas and surfing and going walkabout.

Not sure about your claim of kangaroos coming from Austria. They are marsupials indigenous to Australia and New Guinea. They, along with wallabies, Tasmanian devils evolved from a common marsupial ancestor from South America.

Danke! 🫶🏻 I absolutely love art history and all the greats but Klimt is one of my favourites. Unmistakable style, moves your emotions and stuns you that such works of beauty could be painstakingly created. Have the XXL TASCHEN book of his lifes work. Get it or see it if you can, its circa £150 for a huge, beautifully detailed book. 🇮🇪 💜
