A quick video on setting rear shock preload and damping on a stock 2017 KLR (any Gen 2 KLR really). Filmed with my cell phone and uploaded in all its unedited goodness for your ridicule and/or enjoyment.

I just want to mention that the official KLR manual EXPLICITLY states that shifting from 5 straight to 1 (aka. turning clockwise) or 1 straight to 5 (turning counter-clockwise) will damage the spring preload adjuster (page 127 of the 2009 KLR 650 Manual)

According to the factory service manual, section 13, page 14, under spring preload adjustment...it says you can turn the preload adjuster counter clockwise and not to turn clockwise from 5 to 1. It will damage the adjuster.

So glad I watched this all the way through! Naturally you’d think to turn counterclockwise to make it go back down but I now know that’s not the case! Thanks for the video

That is the case lol. Don’t go from 5 and turn right to 1! You’ll damage your springs

@@SeattleHeights I doubt you would damage the spring but there is a very good chance you could damage the preload adjuster mechanism which could possibly send parts flying out from the bike at high speed.

I keep hearing and seeing videos of going from preload setting 5 back to 1 by continuing to crank clockwise and to be ready for the big “jump”. My early 2014 Factory Owners Manual on page 131 says to turn clockwise up to setting 5, and counterclockwise back to setting 1. In a text box in Bold Print it also says “Do Not turn the adjuster in the opposite direction of these procedures. The spring preload adjuster will be damaged by the shock”. The 2008-2017 Clymer manual only says “Turn the preload adjuster to the desired setting” . No warning about jumping from 5 to 1 with a slam of the spring. I’m gonna follow the Owners Manual on this one. Also, 1 turn out on the dampening screw is recommended in both books for a 150 lb. rider with no passenger or cargo.

Nice job! I've lost a socket, bolt, nut....a few things around that area. That is why I have one of those telescopic magnet tools!

How to know the actual setting to know how many clicks are needed to reach 5 or whatever number I'm looking for? My shock doesn't have the sticker so I don't know it's current position.

Hi mate, I'm a big fellow 6'3 and 105 kg. What will your recommendation for adjusting? Same 2 Gen klr. Thanks

I weigh about the same. I have preload at 5 and damping all the way in and then backed out just a hair. It's definitely a lot firmer ride but not unbearable. At some point I might replace the spring with something heavier but the trails I usually ride aren't that rough.

@@Hand5omeNZ Im 6'4 and 244lbs, I changed my rear spring to the Top Gun 9.3kg/mm. You can't beat the riding improvement especially for the price! $79USD. I was riding around on preload 5 and the stock suspension was so squishy, now on preload 1 and the bike is solid! It does jack the bike up though, which I'm fine with but some may not like. Note: I also swapped put the fork springs to Progressive springs at the same time.

Will the rear spring adjustment change the height of the bike ? Or just the softness of the spring ?

So you go clockwise from 5 to 1? Don't go counter clockwise 5 4 3 2 1?

No! Do not go from 5 straight to 1! That can be dangerous and damage your shock! Slowly turn from 5 to 4 to 3 to reach your desired settings
