Nice to see someone pushing the bike harder than most. I've been considering the KLX for a while now and wasn't sure if it was going to be enough for me, but watching your riding gives me confidence that it can perform well.

Thank you. I believe it’s more capable than people think. The suspension would struggle with larger jumps and heavier riders. But I can get a couple feet of air and it doesn’t bottom out with me on it at ~175 lbs.

Nice riding! I'm one of those older guys that has has a KLX 300 in the stable. I've been riding my larger bikes and the KLX has been sitting in storage, time to see what I can do with it. Stay safe and have fun!

Well done. I’ve had problem raising the front wheel on the 605’s on the trail. You nailed the issue with the front tire. Nice job.

Yup those 605's just spin and would get me into too much trouble. Nice to have a bit of an upgrade. Makes for faster/safer riding too.

I think the tire upgrade turns the KLX into a real gem off road. Still no cross country racer but more than capable on tougher single tracks and hill climbs due to its adequate torque. I bet your geomax tires will serve you well.

You mentioned that there was a difference between metric and inch sizing. I believe the front is a 90/90x21 and the stock rear equates. To a 100/90x18. I seen where guys have run a 120/90x18 and that raises the seat height a bit and could slightly change the fork angle with a subtle change in handling. What sizes did you choose? It would have been nice to include photography of the sizes in the video.

@atlklx5168
@atlklx5168 Жыл бұрын
You won’t be disappointed unless you are an extreme off road guy. Maybe then the trackmaster rear tire would be better (which obviously is not as great on road). But this combo is really good in all scenarios.

So. I've had the Tusk D-Sports on my 2023 KLX300 and pretty happy with the performance front and rear, can't beat the cost and durability. However, this rear tire is heavy! 4 to 5 lbs heavier that the OEM tire and my new Dunlop Geomax EN91 ($20-30 more)! The problem with that weight is that rotational weight is more impactful on the HP and torque, and so the wear and tear on the drivetrain and engine. If felt that it had an affect on my clutch in the higher gears (5&6th). Something to consider.
@atlklx5168
@atlklx5168 Жыл бұрын
I agree completely. It does make the bike feel a little less snappy at higher speeds on the street. But at lower speeds feels good and the grip off road makes it worth it. I need to try the geomax.

Thats the tire set up of my choice as well, I was running Dsport front and back, but the Tusk front has a mind of its own in the baby head boulder strewn trails we have here in NH, but the MT21 is the tire for the front with the Tusk out back, and its so cheap! I burn on eout and spoon on another with little regard for my wallet, and save a few bucks on the rear for beers!
@atlklx5168
@atlklx5168 Жыл бұрын
Nice! Yeah the price is probably the reason why I would never really care to try another tire with the exception of the kenda trackmaster II. But even that tire will not last as long or be as easy to get home with after a flat compared to the Dsport.

@@atlklx5168 Yeah, The side wall the Dsport is super tough, pretty sure its the breeding its had out west where you pretty much need to run aired down.

I just ordered the tusk rear but I don't have issues with my 605 front yet but I have with the rear I have learned to ride in higher gears unless going up hills and I mainly ride offroad works for me lower gears you slide around more but I also hardly ever get under 25 mph most of the time 35 to 55 on endless dirtroads
@atlklx5168
@atlklx5168 Жыл бұрын
Most of my issues I think were in slightly wet conditions especially with roots and rocks. It’s no enduro bike but it definitely helps a lot. On dry dirt I thought the 605s were pretty nice too.

For out in the desert, I'm running the MT21 on the front with a Kenda Trakmaster on the rear. Been pretty happy with it so far, but the MT21 feels a little twitchy in desert sand sections. The rear is hooking up way better though.

Yeah I bet the mt21 would be a bit twitchy in sand. I would really like to try the track master after the tusk. I just fear the dreaded flat tire with the track master since it’s much softer. But it looks awesome and people seem to love it.

@@atlklx5168 It wears fast is the big issue. Especially on pavement. Also have some chunk issues once in a while where small pieces have broken off, but the tire hooks up very well in my conditions (mostly rock and loose dry crap and sand). I run my tires fairly high on the air pressure at 16 to 18 psi, but have smacked a lot of serious rocks on the KLX without a flat. Only flat I've had was due to a huge ancient nail, but I was able to ride out and barely could tell it was flat as long as I was riding at 10mph.

@@tieoneon1614 Thanks for the headsup on the Shinko. Just looked it up. I had no idea it was a DOT approved tire. Awesome. That'll be my next tire to checkout.

The stock tires weren't good enough for your ride on that terrain? Would I need to upgrade the tires for Rocky Mountain fire roads and such? That bike is hard to find and I live in the third largest city in the USA.
@atlklx5168
@atlklx5168 Жыл бұрын
I think they were “good enough” but I was having to make a lot of accommodations for them with wanting to ride faster. Also in mud they definitely were a liability. I still think the stock tire is a good tire but not for pushing the bike a little bit more off road. Good all around tire though.

You got them! Nice upgrade and nice riding. I dont like many channels on the 300, they should have bought mopeds for their riding style. Im doing tires after the winter. IF you want a great boost in torque/low end for dirt cheap, get the HiFlo Filtro air filter off Amazon for $20, cut the back fire screen out, and take the airbox lid off. U get a loud growl from the motor but only u can hear, I love the sound. AND if u dont like it, u can put the lid back on. A O2 delete is $20-$28 too and richen's your air/fuel too without a EJK or tuner. I got my 250 modded to the max, most likely running bout the same hp OEM 300 is but my only reason to upgrade would be to keep it quiet with the same amount of power....but just love the looks of the '18-19 klx250 camo so much more than any current klx. I know u said u are keeping the bike mostly stock, I appreciate that just thought Id throw out some super cheap, easy reversible gains.

Would you say there’s plenty of trails for beginners at highland?
@atlklx5168
@atlklx5168 Жыл бұрын
Yes I would say that is the case. The large and small main loops are both pretty beginner friendly and that alone is a lot of riding. Any trail that is 2 diamond or less is suitable for new riders - there are a good handful of those if you look at their trail map.

Are these stock sizes?
@atlklx5168
@atlklx5168 Жыл бұрын
They are about as close as you can get to stock. Dunlop and Kawasaki specify the stock sizes in inches. Pirelli and tusk use more conventional sizes (mm x aspect ratio - rim size in inches). The front pirelli ends up being a bit wider, the tusk rear is pretty much the same width as stock but it looks bigger because of the aggressive knobs.
