Well done video. I like seeing all the customizing people do to there bikes. It definitely makes the bike yours and not just another bike. Sometimes makes a name for the bike stand out to you. I've done most of the same modes as you. I too changed out the head light for a different look. These KLX's are great bikes.

The popping your getting is proof you’re already lean with the slip-on. I’d get a fueler box just for that, and to cool things down. Problem with airbox mods is that the increase in power is minimal when compared to the added intake noise. I’d add a fueler to compensate for the slip-on and call it good.

Nice work, I had a 2016 KLX250 for a few months, first bike for 30yrs, then found a 2010 KLX250 with a factory 300 head and barrel, full "StayinTune" pipe & the air box lid had been removed, from out west on a farm where it had sat in a shed unused for the last 10yr's. It only had 970km on the clock (602mi). The whole thing was full of "red bull dust", wasp nests and most of the plastics were sun damaged. The carburettor was a mess, so I deep cleaned it and the rest of the bike, cleaned & greased all bearings, swing arm & linkage, steering head bearings & replaced the rear wheel seals. Flushed out all fluids, break, engine oil & coolant, buffed up the plastics as best I could & new deep cycle battery. Got it roadworthy & registered. First ride, it had so much power it scared the living 😁 out of me, it was unexpected after having been used to the standard 250. But it was chewing through the juice. Reinstated the air box lid with the KDX snorkel, which I ended up trimming down internal of the box after seeing the "dust on filter" pattern. Spent a fair bit of time re-jeting the carbi, the nonstandard main jet was too big and changed other jets to get it back to 25-30 km/lt (50-70 mpg) while maintaining great bottom end, good mid-range and acceptable top end power. Still has enough for me & will do freeway speeds easy if need be, not that I like doing it. Put an IMS tank on, SeatConcepts seat, which was not as comfortable as I had hoped for, foot pegs, a rear rack, shorter adjustable hand leavers, bar risers, 12v outlet, Quad Lock, LED globes front and rear, blinkers are still incandescent. The bike came with Barkbusters, a must-have. Got the forks and rear shock professionally serviced with new seals, heaver springs & revalved for my weight, that made a big difference and "planted" as they say. You may not need it, I'm 100 kg (220lb). I now run a Pirelli MT21 up front with a Dunlop D606 rear. That front tyre made a big difference on difficult terrain. And get your wheels balanced when you can. I have put about 4000 miles on it in just over 12 months, mostly dirt and have had so much fun, I rarely take the VW van out at all. It has been a great bike, I am outgrowing it, but it was worth the fun getting it where it now stands and will be a great ride for the next owner. A few weeks ago I found a KLX 400r (2005) with low km on it and unmolested. I like green and will see if it fit my stature & weight better. Love your work, I'll keep watching, stay safe and have fun. Cheers from downunder.... Shane

everything looks great! just a heads up about the front break line, you find over time that it will rip up because it hits the left hand guards when the front shock compress over bumps or braking. an easy fix is to bring the brake line inward towards the fork tube by rotating the top ring holder a 180 degrees, with a little bend here and there. you're good to go. this will be easy, you have got skills!

What a great looking KLX!! The black panels and white tank really set this bike off for looks...oh yes the headlight also. I have 15,000 miles on my 2021..just finished riding the TAT (NC to OR and back) and twice on the SM500. This is an awesome small adventure bike. You might consider a few more items if you are indeed looking to make it a "real" adventure bike. I added a larger foot to the side stand which keeps it up in the mud/stand; pivotpegs are the cadilac for footpegs; nelson rigg make a small fender bag which has the option to tie the front straps to the forks..it will not come lose when you do this; I would consider radiator guards (Emperor Racing has black powered coated; 2 tooth larger rear sprocket is really required to do the steepe climbs on the TAT making the bike work like a "tractor" that just keeps climbing; Zeta makes some really nice brake/clutch levers. If you do install the EJK, I found the best mounting is to place it under the left upper side panel just pass the raditator to avoid heat with velcro tape. It keeps it high for water crossing and you can easily remove the side panel if you need to adjust the tuning. Along with the KDX snorkel, install a Twin Air filter and put on a air filter skin. Take along a couple of spare skins and just replace them so you don't have to clean the air filter on the road. The Mosko Moto luggage, Rackless 80, does not need a rack but I installed the PMR side racks just to protect the battery/reservior side of the bike...it did it job when I laid the bike down several times in deep ruts and sand. Keep the videos coming....
@rookieofthegear9051

This is awesome info, I appreciate it! I've got a similar fender bag for an extra tube, ties to the forks and I use the reckless 40, although the 40 get's real tight. Did you find that you absolutely needed the EJK after stage 1 mods? I'm still unsure about that piece.

What did you use for additional gasoline when going on the TAT. I just sold my africa twin 2020 adventure sport with close to 7 gallons and easily did the CA and NM BDRs. I am getting the 2.7 IMS tank but debating whether I will need need a rotopak. I am either doing part of the TAT or the WYBDR this august With my new KLX. So excited to not be riding a 600+ pound bike anymore.
@mikemathews1711
@mikemathews1711 Жыл бұрын
@@Asdfghjkl1234 I did not purchase the IMS tank due to the additonal cost for only 0.7 gallon improvement. You are ahead of the game with the larger tank and should have no problems with gas range until you reach MS river. See my comments above...Giant Loop 2 gallon bag with Giant Loop Pronghorn straps to attach it to rack on the bike.

@@mikemathews1711 thanks very much. I just installed the barkbusters which I had on the Africa Twin as well. Thanks for all the tips. I did the kdx snorkel and filter set up you mentioned. I used the pegz you mentioned as well before and with the larger footprint and rocking motion they have makes them amazing so I also bought them for my klx. *Question ****. Very nice! Really unique look. I'm also doing the adv-lite conversion to my 22' KLX300. I've only had it for 2 months so not as far along in the process as you are, but already got a lot of mods. I'm pretty jealous of that cyclops headlight, it looks amazing! Shame that it doesn't fit so well w/o heavy modification to the dash area. I'm eventually planning to do something like a mini-nav tower with a Samsung tablet or Carpe Iter, mounting bracket, and small windscreen, so I won't mess with that. I have the Kawasaki green model and I like it, but I want black rims, haha! I really want a bigger tank, but according to IMS there's a small chance they will be making a bigger KLX300 tank next year. I'm holding out for a few months to see if they announce anything.

Great build, I own one of the older carburetor klx 300, very good low maintenance reliable bike, done almost the same mods as you! The most noticeable of them all would probably have to be the stainless steel break lines for me, not sure about yours but the older klx's have spongy breaks and only get worse with age as the rubber lines expand with age! Also I find KDX snorkel to help bike breath better without making it loader like removing the air box lid!

Interesting build up! Looking forward to seeing it used in the field! I love the Cyclops headlight, makes the bike pop, something I really wanted to do, but I think I am gonna keep the stock and use the Mini Univesal ADV fairing by ADV Spec to build a small tower more conducive to navigation, and find myself some cheap aux lights to wire in, and if the Tusk doesn't work for you, Revzilla has a USB port you can more easily wire in, and has a (12V)2a and 5a port wired. Its more easily wired in and fits more uses than the Tusk 12v cigarette lighter type. Great build looking forward to some ride videos! I will have to subscribe!

@@rookieofthegear9051 Objective achieved. Glad you got a laugh! 😂 Well when I had the KLR I was already used to bikes much faster, so I never really adjusted to a bike that was so heavy and under powered. I lived in AZ so it was mostly desert riding and was fun but it was very top heavy. I'm 6'4" and had suspension work and the raised swing arm link but it never really did anything great. Though it would do just about anything. I ended up selling it. If I'm going to have something under powered I need it to handle well at least. So now I'm looking at the KLX300 as it's frowned upon to ride a KDX220 2 STROKE on the street. 😐 I don't have any street legal bikes at the moment which sucks. Just bought a 2023 model and am doing some of the same mods. I have a Delkevic can from another bike I'm planning to put on it when the extension pipe arrives. I'm skeptical of the internet telling you that you have to do a fuel tuner. I like KC Outdoors approach of checking the plug occasionally for signs of detonation. Just ordered the KDX snorkel as almost everyone I've watched or talked to says factory settings are very lean and opening up the airflow should help a ton.

Hey Chris, I'm right where you are as well. I already have the slip on exhaust, I think I may just add the snorkel and check the plug every so often. The tuner seems a bit unnecessary but who knows, I may be completely wrong about that lol.

I've got about 13k kms on my 2018 KLX250S. Been using it mostly for dual sport and hard trail riding. Even with stock D605 tires on I've gotten it up some of the steepest hill climbs! This week I have a 330cc Keng Engine big bore kit arriving + whole new rear shock and klx300r valves for front suspension. I'm a big guy so need the extra power and suspension and will start using it more for adventure rides once it's set up. Hoping for a good result because there's not a great deal of bikes to choose from in the land of Viet Nam. I don't consider anything over 150kg an adventure bike even though that's what they are all called and marketed as highly capable offroad machines. It's just not true! Good luck on your journey 👍

I would recomend to use an old or used road bicicle tire (with 2 zip ties) as a protector on the front frame were the Front fender doesn't cover (under it and upper the belly pan), best cheap mod to keep the painting chipping away and lettin'g corrosion join in after some usage. And also make some plates to cover the water pump (you can use the right fot peg main bolt as primary point and then on the belly pan make 2 holes and add 2 bolt to get a molded plate fit) same for the left side if you want to add a little more o protection over the Case. Fine looking Dakar style Bike! And lastly, the poping you get on the exhaust is because the EVAP unit working its that fine loking plate over the exhaust pipe conection (Cylinder and exhaust) you need a delete kit, pretty decent price actually or you can make it yourself after some research. Thing just makes unburnt fuel coming from exhaust valve burn on the exhaust/pipe/header with fresh air coming from the intake VIA a tube and a valve.

Great job and an awesome bike! Love the look with that headlight. This video is very helpful as I just bought a KLX 250 for my son to do adventure rides with me and I need to get it kitted out. I have a KTM 890 ADV R but I still love riding the KLX. I run the Reckless 80 on my KTM and was planning to set the KLX up with the Kriega OS as the second bike won’t need as much storage. Did you use the universal base?

That’s awesome, you and your son will have a blast! I bought the Kriega OS-Combo 12 and yes, I believe it was the universal base that I ordered with it. When I go back to the link it looks like they don’t sell the 12 anymore. But that would be way too small for moto camping anyway, they are pretty limited as far as space. I use the reckless 40 and it’s the perfect size for that bike. I have some 511 bags with the molly straps that I can attach to it for extra food or what not. Thanks for the kind words, I hope you guys have fun together!

Thanks for the comment! To be honest, it's been difficult to find a new location for the ignition. It's currently zip tied between my new headlight and the handlebars. I had a buddy helping me fabricate a plate that would hold the ignition in the empty space of the cyclops headlight but he bailed lol. Honestly having it zip tied has not been an issue for me whatsoever, still works great and it's in a convenient location. It's cosmetic at this point.

I thought about buying one of these, but I'm used to a KX250 2 stroke. I'm not sure if this would live up power wise to be a good trail bike where I go, and a medium grade bike for the highway. @@redinator9896 the KLX is not the friendliest on long stretches of freeway. Highway is great for cruising under 70, it’s fun. If you’re trying to go above 70 for few hours it gets wiggly. @Rookie Of The Gear You're welcome! To answer your question on the fuel controller. I'm not an expert by any means but a bit of geek. So, I did look into it thoroughly before I did it. So, combustion is basically done with a mixture of air and fuel. If you alter the air, you need to adjust the fueling. A slip-on by definition is only a muffler and it leaves on the stock catalytic convertor not resulting in much free flow hence not requiring a fuel controller but if you get rid of the cat with a 3/4 or a full system you need to adjust fueling and same goes for the air box mods, even as simple as a free flowing air filter like K&N race filter will require adjusting of air to fuel ratios. Not doing so will result in the bike running lean and missing etc. You'll actually be losing power rather than gaining. Hope this helps! One question. Is that a seat concepts seat? If so, how big a difference is there in comfort? Worth the price tag?
@rookieofthegear9051
@rookieofthegear9051 Жыл бұрын
@@R1Ammar Thanks for that, great explanation BTW. I've read similar things but still on the fence about it, I may try it and go from there. And yes, I have a seat concepts seat. It's shorter for me so I can reach the ground but it's actually not as comfortable as the stock seat. Although keep in mind that I did ask them to make it pretty flat since I was going for ground reach rather than comfort. I'm sure you can get one way more comfortable than mine. Another thing I'm not a huge fan of is the texture. I like to be able to slide as close to the front when coming to a stop and that was doable with the stock seat but the seat concepts seat is more textured so it's not as smooth. These are small complaints, overall it's fine. :)
@R1Ammar
@R1Ammar Жыл бұрын
@Rookie Of The Gear you're welcome. Hope it works out for you. One common misconception with performance mods especially with fueling and gearing is that "one shouldn't fiddle with them, because the factory engineers know best," unfortunately that's not true, factory engineers have to de-tune purposefully to meet emission requirements. So, there's plenty of performance left on the table. That's good to know, it's a pretty hefty investment for a seat. I'll further look into it. Thank you.
