Thanks for sharing this video. I just sold my 2020 africa twin 600+ pounds and got a klx 300. I did the California and NM BDRs and the Africa Twin was dangerously heavy and not fun at all off road on rugged or muddy terrain. I just got the klx300 today and got the bigger tank pegs side racks and led headlight and windshield. Looking forward much more enjoyable riding.

I have the 2023 KLX300 Camo, I switched to the 13/43 sprocket combo, great for trails, not so great for top end speed on the road so I kept the 43 on the rear and put the 14 back up front to reach a happy medium. Also, was concerned about the approach angle of the chain with the 13T up front and seeing others comment on the undue wear on the rubber swingarm chain guard pad at the front of the swingarm. 14/43 is a nice combo to try!
@atlklx5168
@atlklx5168 Жыл бұрын
I haven’t thought about that approach angle before I’ll have to monitor. We basically have the same gear ratio since 14/43 and 13/40 are nearly identical. It’s a good amount of torque but still doable on the highway. Cheers!

These 250/300 dual sports do really well on trails {not hard enduro}. Smooth power, hard to stall, soft suspension eats up the wider single track. 50" ATV trails are really fun cuz you are not working so hard to control the weight like on legit single track. I take my KLX some of the same trails I ride my KDX on. My biggest limiting factor about the KLX is the gearing, you want to keep the higher gearing for traveling dual sport style but it can get you in trouble in steep rocky stuff. Makes you carry momentum and pick your lines smarter!

I agree I really would love to put a 45 rear sprocket but then I’d miss being able to cruise at 55-60 without revving the nuts off the bike. Dual sports are all about compromise though and I like the 13T counter sprocket for now.

@@atlklx5168 Im at 14/45 {13/42} and running a little under 7k @ 60mph which isnt screaming for this motor, I dont run over 65mph very much cuz of the wind drag. I put on my 13t when I know Im going to trail systems, gives 1st gear that little extra for maneuvering in the woods.

You mentioned the weight and that's the reason I went with the little brother to this bike as my dualsport. The KLX230 starts at 290lbs but the 230R is only 260lbs. I've been taking a lot of weight off mine and know I can get it to the 230R stock weight, then go even lighter from there by a couple of pounds. I don't mind having less power, this is my first dualsport and it's got enough for my riding even in stock form. Power adders like roller cams, high ratio roller rockers and big bore kits are inexpensive (in my opinion/budget). I can get 270cc and 300cc kits for just under 300 bucks. EFI tune wakes it up a lot! I'm no stranger to home brew lightly porting heads and can't wait to see what the head looks like in there. Allballs racing has conversion bearings to put GasGas EC250 forks on there, or FSE400. They are listed under another bike that uses the same bearings as the 230 and I'll have to figure out the stem when I get there but it's nothing a trip to my machist can't fix. I'll be doing some welding to swap in my shock upgrade but this is my hobby, it's my idea of fun. 😎 I can add power and swap suspension but that 300 really can't loose more than a couple of pounds. It'll always be another top heavy water cooled bike and that's something you'll just have to live with. Have you ever had it pinned wide open off road? I sometimes wonder if the extra power would be worth the weight penalty? I guess it would be if I could use all the power off road but I kinda doubt I would. It's a trail bike, sure it's street legal but still a trail bike at heart. Maybe if I spent more time on highways but then I'd just buy a sport bike for that 🙍 Anyway, I'll always want to try a 300 for a test ride. I'm sure it's a great bike in stock form.

@ATL KLX most of the time dual sport manufacturers set them as a 50/50 street/dirt and it is up to us to make them more dirt worthy! The KLX comes without rim locks and tall gearing and 50/50 tires with standard tubes which all needs to be addressed prior to serious trail riding! Once done try and loose weight with an Lithium battery, after market pipe, skid plate and hand gaurds!
@atlklx5168
@atlklx5168 Жыл бұрын
@@C3HENRYS yeah I’ve changed it a lot lately. Changed sprocket, knobbies with motion pro rim locks, HD tubes running about 11-12 psi, new pro taper bars with hand guards, skid plate. A lot more confidence on the trails.

I bought the 13T front but I'm waiting until my 600 mile break in is done to install....I can't imagine keeping on the lower end RPM range with that 13T installed.

@atlklx5168 Жыл бұрын
Yes it does rev a bit more but I like the 13T overall. Cruising at 65 is still fine and now I think 2nd gear on trails is really nice whereas I was downshifting to 1st a lot more with the stock 14T.

Great video, sweet trails. At around the eleven minute mark you mention a stock KLX configuration not making it on that trail were you talking suspension, tires, EFI and pipes, ...?
@atlklx5168
@atlklx5168 Жыл бұрын
The stock configuration I was referring to was mainly the stock tire setup. The stock D605 tires are very road-focused and wouldn't handle the hill climbs, mud, slippery roots, etc. I have Tusk Dsport and Pirelli MT21 tires now + heavy duty tubes with rim locks allow for airing down the tires a bit to get even more traction. The suspension is good, I just adjusted it for a bit more compression dampening (using the clickers) front and rear to cope with the small jumps on the trails. A smaller counter sprocket also proves useful in the slower/tighter stuff. Thanks for watching!

@@atlklx5168 Thanks for clarifying for me. I agree. I’m still running the stock tires but once I find some decent riding it’ll be time to upgrade them. They have to be around here somewhere. (Nor-Cal) Have fun my East Coast Brother. 👍

I have another video of top speed on my channel you should check it out. I got to 92 (indicated) but I’m also 165 lbs without gear. I think it’s safe to say anyone could go 80-85 top speed and cruise happily at 70 for a long time without issue.

Your 300R would be just fine. My KLX300 came with dual sport tires and they aren’t good for serious off road or single track. Your bike is also 20 lbs lighter; it would be good fun out there.
