In this video, I am sharing how I was able to fix squeaking and knocking suspension sounds coming from the upper control arm. This fix will work on Tesla Model S, Model 3, Model X & Model Y. It will also work on most other vehicle brands.
No need to take anything apart, this can in most cases be done while the wheel is on the car. No need to remove the control arm from the vehicle either. So far, I've done over 1000 miles of driving since filming the video and no noise has returned! EDIT: Now at 20,000 miles since greasing! ZERO NOISE!
Tools Needed: Grease Needle, Grease Gun (Your choice, small or large)
Grease Injector Needle: amzn.to/3rvnmk6 Currently $3.77
Grease Gun Large: amzn.to/3C2bJpS Currently $18
Grease for Large Gun: amzn.to/3e6gyq7 Currently $10.67
if sold out, then
Grease for Large Gun: amzn.to/40BeV6t Currently $14.84
OR
Grease Injector Needle: amzn.to/3rvnmk6 Currently $3.77
Grease Gun Small: amzn.to/3fIRm9Q Currently $17
Grease for Small Gun (3-pack): amzn.to/3yhqofP Currently $14.71
Optional: Paint Pen (8-Pack): amzn.to/3SVU2z5 Currently $11.39
Optional: Car Jack to raise Car: amzn.to/3P2cgA1 Currently $43.99
Optional: Jack Stands: amzn.to/3DU9h60 Currently $27.99
The Mini overall is more expensive total, however, may be more convenient for those who rarely need grease or have limited storage.

YOU SIR are BRILLIANT!! Just did this fix on my 2016 X that was creaking absurdly loud (the whole street could hear it). I injected into the boot until it swelled up a little, then worked the boot around for 15-30 seconds. Sealed with rubber cement where the needle went in. I didn't even get out of the driveway before noticing the sound was completely gone. Further driving around the neighborhood (lots of turns, roundabouts, etc) confirmed it is happy (and now so is my wife). 15 minutes of work (which included reading the owners manual for jack mode settings and jacking up the car) and $35 (for parts/grease)...Done.

@@antde2001 The recommended tools linked are more than adequate. I have a virtual mechanics shop in my garage (just added tire machine last month!). I personally use an Lithium powered grease gun. Very much overboard, but when I actually HAD a motorcycle shop, it was much more useful. Especially when greasing my fork lift.... 30+ Grease Zerks, and would take 5-6 tubes of grease! That durned a multi-hour greasing project into a 15-20 minute project 🙂

just did another hundred miles today, this time off freeway. I’m noticing overall steering is considerably more smooth. I stupidly scrapped the last control arm they replaced, as I keep all my parts, I should have cut open and experimented a little bit on that one. Grabbed it by accident with a bunch of other scrap I was taking to the junkyard. I do remember trying to move the joint by hand with it off the car. Even with a vice grips on the pin, I could not swivel or rotate the ball joint on the control arm. That one was squeaking quite a bit worse.

Thanks for the detailed instructions. For those interested, there is the price quote I got from Tesla service center in the San Francisco bay area. For a Model X, diagnosis $255. Upper control arm is $90 a piece. But labor is $275 to install. So it will be about $700 + tax, if that's exactly your problems. From the quote is doesn't seem like the diagnosis fee will count towards the repair cost. I mean, that's not too bad for an expensive car. They will even throw in tire pressure and conditional examination for free!! Hey, I can afford that but that doesn't mean I want to. The approach in this video is a grand total of about $20. It probably take 5 mins for each side. I don't plan on taking any wheels off. I will just set the air suspicion to the highest level and inject grease in there until it ballons a bit. After confirming that it's quiet I might put a drop of glue to seal up the hole. This is not rocket science. I suspect that water already gotten in there anyways. And we never worry about raining in California (oh well, except this year, lol). BTW, I also get a quote for a plastic trim. Surprisingly Telsa's price is only $29. The cheapest one I can find on Ebay is $60. Wow. I will give them credit for affordable parts. epc.tesla.com/ is super easy for finding the right parts.
@gir1258
@gir1258 Жыл бұрын
When I put in my request, they automatically updated it based on my description as replacement of the upper control arms. I was quoted just over $300 for parts & labor. I’m in SoCal. Still, it is too much of an expense for something that is going to run into the same issue.
@uswwt
@uswwt Жыл бұрын
@@gir1258 I bought a mini grease gun, a needle. Set the car at the highest suspension mode temporarily. Then just poke into the rubber casing of the upper control arm and inject till it inflates a bit. I also spray some silicone lube into the connections in the other end of the upper control arms for good measure. The problem is gone for good. Total cost is less than $20.

@@uswwt I’m just about to do this, however I have a 3 so no adjustable suspension. Thought I was going to have to purchase a jack, but luckily saw another comment that said just turning the wheel will give enough room for access. Didn’t know about using the silicone spray too, I’ll give that a try. Is there a specific type of grease that you used?
@uswwt
@uswwt Жыл бұрын
@@gir1258 oh, I am not sure about the 3. Perhaps drive one side on a curb or brick and the other side will provide more room? I tried jacking up my X, hoping that the upper control arm will separate a bit more. It didn't. If you buy a mini grease gun with long steel tube, you probably don't need much clearance at the top of the tire at all. Silicone lube is just regular stuff from Lowes/HD. I don't think there is a problem inside there.

Great job on figuring this out and making this video, very helpful! What Tesla needs to do is re-design the rubber boot that surrounds the upper control arm ball joint and add a permanent grease fitting so that customers can periodically add grease when\if needed. This is the way it's been done on ICE vehicles for many years. Come on Tesla stop reacting to a problem with the same problem and design a solution!

I've seen this video before, but just ordered parts to try it. I've got a 2018 M3P that I purchased used 12/2020 with 60k miles. Had the front upper arms replaced the following year (winter of 2021) and figured it would be done. They started squeaking again the next winter (winter of 2022). When I brought them in they discovered that the parts they used were under a recall so they swapped them again for free (around spring of 2023). But of course it started squeaking again a few months ago when it started getting cold again (I now have about 117k miles on my M3P)... I was just gonna give up, but figured I'd try this $35 fix. Can't hurt. I'm sure it'll work, but I'll report back. Thank you for this video!!

Very Surprised! Don't need to be handy to do this. Takes little to no skill to inject the grease. While new Control Arms is a very good thing, I'd still recommend proactively injecting grease in to them, as it's just going to be a repeat. The squeaking came back with vengeance a few days ago during 100 deg conditions after doing what you showed here. The noise then completely stopped the next day. ??? High ambient temps (100 deg +) may be a contributing factor.

If you replace the upper control arm, does it come with a new rubber covering? I have an appointment to replace the control arm (even though I noted in my message it seems they just need grease and got no response), but I’m tempted to try this first. If it doesn’t resolve the issue, just wondering if the rubber covering I’ll puncture gets replaced.

Tesla will not grease the control arms. or just about anything. Replace only, with the same defective parts. You are most likely right that all it needs is some grease. They will install an entirely new control arm, and charge you a fortune to do it just to have it fail same way.

I have this on my M3 now. Took it to tesla where they replaced both control arms but issue hasn’t been resolved. Since its new control arms, do you think this injecting grease would still work? Also I don’t have a jack but it seems easy enough to access without jacking it up?

If they did it under warranty, don't do it, wait until warranty is over, or they will not cover another replacement. If you paid out of pocket, you get a 1 year 10,000 mile parts & labor warranty with the repair, wait until thats up before injecting grease. It could also be another joint, however, unlikely. ALL these joints seem to be lacking adequate grease from factory.

Thank You! If you have not yet, please like and subscribe! It helps tremendously! In description box, I do have links to grease. However, it's best to use one that has very high stability and will not separate. Marine use grease is good with water displacement, so a Marine Trailer Bearing Grease would work well. One of my personal favorites, not sure if it's available by you, is Penzoil Marine Trailer Bearing Grease. I did the same thing, but instead of a syringe, I used a cutter and punched a small slit really small just enough to let the WD-40 nozzle go in ( The nozzle which comes with the WD-40 can pasted with the tape on the side) and with WD-40, I first cleaned everything from pressed a few times to get everything out from the slit , I injected high temperature lubricant for life. I use WD-40 because the last time I did just with the grease and the noise came back after two months. So second time someone suggested me to clean the old bees first because that might have some dust particles which will retain and then load it do fully. Do not be cheap putting grease. Let it overflow a little so that you know that there is no more room left. Today after two years left home happily after 10 minutes I heard the same noise again and my took away my smile and after 2 year and 2 months I again heard the same noise. So when I tried searching this problem on KZfaq, so surprisingly found out that everyone is using the same method these guys doing it for first time because they are very much curious to make video, Also, it’s possible that they might not even have the problem, but they’re still doing it and doing it wrong. Well over 60,000 miles with grease and noise has not come back. WD-40 is likely one of the worst things to use. It is not meant as a full on lubricant. It is a mild lubricant/machine oil with water displacement properties. It has a very low film strength. While it will make the noise go away, you will still have metal on metal contact inside that joint causing it to continue to wear out. Grease is meant as a full on high pressure lubricant, with a strong sheer strength. That means that the protective layer of grease will prevent more metal on metal contact.

Did they do it under warranty or paid? If Paid, go get a refund as they replaced good parts. And ALWAYS request your old parts back if it's a paid service. I know your screen name says Canada, but a lot of laws mirror the USA, I do believe if you request they must give it to you in Canada as well. If it was warranty service, go back and have them try again. There are a number of other bushings or joints it could be coming from. If they say i's just a noise issue and not a mechanical failure, this is a early precursor of a mechanical failure. It's a dry joint somewhere thats rubbing without lubrication. Push the issue. You can also have someone drive the car slowly or turn the wheel, or do whatever is needed to make the noise, while having others outside the vehicle listening to where it's coming from. Try and narrow it down to side and even component level if possible. I've had service want to replace a faulty part (suspension clunk). They said it was on passengers side, that was AFTER diagnosis. I told them no, it's drivers side. They were about to start tearing passengers side suspension apart.... I was right...

Okay so an update from me. I tried this with the tools linked, and it worked...briefly... So almost right away I noticed a difference in the noise. Much quieter. Before if I went 40 mph or slower, the creak was pretty bad. I could easily go 40 now with nothing. It was totally gone. However, after a few miles driving, the creak started to come back. I turned the wheels back in forth to get the grease in there, it made the noise subside again. Then it would come back after a few miles. It'll come back if I go 10 mph or slower. And then randomly it'll come back in the 40 mph range. Any idea on what else I could do? It definitely is that area. I put more grease a couple times to make sure I got enough in there, and I definitely did. It's been a few weeks and it's still there. I'm guessing because it has been around 40 degrees at night that the grease is freezing and it can't move around well in there.

Are you sure the current noise is coming from the front end? Also other joints, such as sway bar links among others. The control arms are the primary offenders. Also, it could depend on how long the noise had already been happening for. It is quite possible the ball joist may had gotten too far gone. You should be able to hear the noise while parked and turning the wheel in most cases. any possibility of jacking one wheel up at a time, having someone turn the steering wheel back and fourth while you listen to try and track down the noise?

@@KmanAuto I just did the driver side. It's weird because it does go away completely. Then it comes back. So I have a feeling it is the control arm only. Does that make sense? If I grease it, turn the wheels to grease it up, I can hear it like 0% of the time. But after a while it comes back and I can hear it like 30% of the time

I'm having trouble finding a mechanic that will do this. One non-Tesla mechanic said they wouldnt do it because grease would leak onto the brakes and cause a safety concern. I might try it myself, but I'm worried it wont fix the issue and I'll have all this seemingly useless grease tools.
@KmanAuto
@KmanAuto 5 ай бұрын
if it leaks onto the brakes, then you used about five times more grease and you should have. It's just not gonna happen, the rubber bushing would inflate like a water balloon if you put that much in there. Some might squeeze out when you first take his needle out, but you just wipe that away with a rag as for trying it and not working, worst case scenario you just spent 30 or $40, and you still have some tools you could resell on craigslist or Facebook. Best case scenario you just saved hundreds of dollars, including able to preventively Greece the other side. not just that, for that 30 or $40 you have enough grease to be able to do it about a dozen times if not more. because as of right now, Tesla has no permanent fix, so even if you have to replace it's gonna happen again but if just when
@KmanAuto
@KmanAuto 5 ай бұрын
also no need to have a mechanic do it, in an ideal world is this the right way to fix it? No, in an ideal world Tesla wouldn't put out such a shoddy piece of hardware. there are some aftermarket permanent fixes, but you're looking at spending big dollars, for the custom hardware. I have not had to re-grease on either of my vehicles since making this video, and it's been about 60,000 miles on the one that I did in the video. roughly. Compare that to the multiple sets of control arms that I had to have done under warranty and a couple out of warranty before I just said screw it increased myself. This is lasted longer than putting brand new parts on.

The good news - we still have 4 months of warranty, so this should all be covered. Since I wrote this, both the steering and the left A arm are making the same noise. I got lucky? I'll be luckier if they give us a loaner. And very surprised. We are 30 miles away, and from reading, I don't trust they will have all the parts, when needed.

Don't forget about the negative camber, that very few people actually seem to want, Killing tires in as little as 10,000 miles. My sisters Model Y has 11,000 miles on it. Both rear tires are completly bald and down to cords. Not even a performance model, and she doesn't drive much. A lot of those miles are going back and fourth between Bismark, ND and Milwaukee, Wi. Straight shot freeway.

@@KmanAuto I have a performance Y (2020) which eats tires like no other (negative camber and staggered wheels preventing tire rotation the culprit). I was replacing tires every 10k miles. What worked to tame tire wear was selecting a harder compound (pilot sport all season 4) and a four wheel alignment. Even without tire rotation, I’ve managed to put 30k miles on a set of tires. New record! Haha

Having owned a Model X for close to 8 years, I find it abhorrent that Tesla has not changed the engineering of these components. How much more evidence do they need that these parts are clearly not designed properly? I've noticed that if an issue bothers Elon on his drives, it gets fixed right away. But issues related to northern climates are rarely addressed (freezing rimless windows, control-arm issues, suspension problems from lousy roads, lousy wiper logic in winter road spray) because he doesn't experience them.

Can't please everyone... But, my comment stands. Especially when crap like this is happening: teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/control-arm-safety-issue.298987/ Also, considering I can see the Analytics of this video, where the traffic is coming from, and what key words are being used to find this video, what I'm seeing is that it is a much worse, and more wide-spread issue than people think. I'm seeing control arm squeaking and failures even on late 2022's, and even a 2023 Model year Tesla's already. It's time to stop giving Tesla a free pass on what can be a very dangerous issue. The Model S has ben out for 11 years now believe it or not. They have not significantly changed designs of these components. One "fix" tesla is using is to slather butylene all over he joint to help prevent water intrusion (which really isn't even the problem, one of the major problems is lack of grease, second, these can't handle the stress these heavy vehicles are placing on them). So yes, my comment, "c'mon get your shit together" is accurate.
