Not from Chicago, but one which, "even then," had overtaken Chicago as the "Second City" in population: a clip of the ending minutes of the early edition of NewsCenter4 with anchors Paul Moyer and Kelly Lange on KNBC Channel 4 in Los Angeles. Also features Paul Dandridge, John Marshall and Boyd Matson. This was on the tail end of a 3/4" Umatic tape where something was recorded over most of this.
As the tape comes in, Paul Dandridge is concluding the "Business Today" report with a story on prices and supplies of Honda Accords in car dealers' showrooms, then signals for a commercial break by announcing Paul and Kelly will continue with the newscast afterwards.

Commercial: Merrill Lynch, with questions for Los Angelenos - "There's Only One Merrill Lynch" (Copyright 1977 Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner & Smith Inc.)
Back to the studio, where Paul Moyer leads in with the next story:
- Two suspects in eight grisly murders, Patrick Kearney and David Hill, turn themselves in to police in Riverside County - as John Marshall reports, Sheriff Ben Clark speaks about the circumstances leading to their arrest
- Kelly Lange introduces the final story, a report by Boyd Matson from Malibu on a religious meditation pilgrimage by two Buddhist monks who have vowed to spend a year and a half walking the Pacific Coast Highway in a search for inward peace; they had begun their journey at the Gold Wheel temple in Pasadena on May 7th and intend to walk a full 500 miles to a city with 10,000 Buddhists in Lucaya(?), bowing down every three steps along the way; one of the monks, Heng Chau, is heard explaining his motivation for this prayer and meditation pilgrimage
Kelly and Paul then sign off the early edition, and advise viewers to stay tuned for the 11pm edition with John Schubeck
With instrumental guitar music as the background, the credits roll:

The closing news theme brings back memories to Saturday night, and after the news waiting for Saturday Night Live to start.

I Grew up in L.A. and from the late 60s to 1980 I heard this damn song every night after the news was over. It was either that or switch to KABC and listen to Baxter Ward pontificate each night, or KTLA to put up with George Putnam, who only knew how to do news standing up. The Ted Baxter character on the Mary Tyler Moore show was loosely based on Putnam and it was hard not to see why.

Ahhhhh I knew I could track down that music in an old clip! 40 years later and it still pops into my head every so often. Crazy! I can’t remember what I had for breakfast this morning, but I totally knew every note of a stupid news theme?! Too funny!

When I was a kid, I remember seeing a bunch of houses boarded up in preparation for demolition and the building of the 105, aka Century Freeway, I-105. I attended a school that was in the area.

I left L.A. long before the Century Freeway was built and so I didn't even know it was an issue. I knew people going to the airport from the IE had the 91/Imperial Hwy or I-10 to get them there and just took that for granted. Came back for a Navy tour in Long Beach and Port Hueneme in 1984 and the Century Fwy was already built; I was like that's all L.A. needs is another friggin' freeway. Here we are 39 years later and there's like 7 more (toll expressways, most of them). It ain't the L.A. I grew up in, that's for damn sure.

Some have noted, in other places, a slight resemblance between Paul Dandridge and longtime anchor for NYC sister station WNBC Channel 4, Chuck Scarborough. Dandridge, however, did do some time in New York, at WCBS Channel 2, as of 1971.

They _all_ looked like Ron Burgundy back then. In fact Paul Moyer tried to pattern his looks and mannerisms after Tom Snyder; then when Snyder left the news business Moyer started acting like Dan Rather. It was pathetic.

Growing up in the 80s, it was sad to see the homes moved off of Crenshaw Bl and the surrounding neighborhood to build I-105 (Century Fwy, opened in 1993). Sadder to later learn the racism involved in which areas were chosen. But it's a done deal, part of our lives now.

The Century Freeway (105) was ultimately built, despite the insane opinion of Brent Rushforth. Too bad more freeways haven't been built. The NIMBY's made sure of that.

Paul Moyer was an arrogant prick. He was a plagiarer too. In the 70s he tried to be Tom Snyder, in the 80s he tried to be Dan Rather. He never had his own style, he'd rip off from successful anchors figuring it was the shortest distance between two points.

@@briane173I take total exception to your assessment of Paul Moyer. I worked with Paul at KNBC during the 1990s and found him to be a very nice individual and a fantastically talented news anchor.
