Interesting to see commercials for big cars and Texaco gasoline during the last few weeks gasoline was 35 cents per gallon in the U.S. No mention of mileage in these ads. The nation was about to be awakened.

Wasn't Larry Finch the coach who came under fire after Memphis lost to Drake in the 1996 first round?

Maybe my favorite John Wooden story was, in an interview with Walton, shortly after this game, he said "Bill, I used to think you were a pretty good ballplayer (pause) then you missed that shot.

Back then, beating UCLA in basketball was rarer than eclipses. Incidentally, Bill Walton was officially listed at 6-11 by his insistence. He was probably 7-2 but he believed seven-footers were "freaks". Unlike Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), Walton didn't have the impact in the NBA that Kareem had due to knee problems.
@brianarbenz7206
@brianarbenz7206 2 жыл бұрын
Bill grew up self-conscious about his size and his stuttering problem. So capping his official height at 6-11 was a left over defense mechanism from his youth of feeling awkward.

FYI Walton's problems were with his foot, not his knees. Multiple fractures and surgeries limited his career, but he still won 2 pro championships

The last of the 7 straight NCAA Championships UCLA would win from 1967-73 before being eliminated by North Carolina State, and David Thompson. But the following year in San Diego, UCLA would beat Kentucky for John Wooden’s 10th and final NCAA Basketball Championship, with Wooden retiring after that final.

If George McGinnis was at Indiana this is all elementry. Indiana wins it all with he and Dowling And having the General on the sidelines doesn't hurt either.
@brianarbenz1329
@brianarbenz1329 Жыл бұрын
But McGinnis was absolutely not a team player. I like him. I saw him play in a high school all-star game. He had unmatched ability. But he had to have the offense designed around him. Would not have worked with Knight, or most any of the top coaches.
@stever1791
@stever1791 Жыл бұрын
@@brianarbenz1329 You could be so correct on that. I think about when Dr.J arrived here in Philly , George lost a step in everything he did. But boy what a talent. If Coach Knight could have gotten George to stay and play with old HS teammate Steve Dowling , That would have been some frontcourt to stop
