What does it mean to “set the knees”? I can’t tell what she’s doing differently when “setting the knees”.

I injured my low spine with all types of squats. I'm guessing I was relying too much on my weak back muscles instead of my legs. On top of that I suspect SI joint issue. FML. No more squats for the time being g

I screwed my SI joint from squatting, healed now but I realised that I was squatting wrong for my build.

Usually has to do with something moving that's not supposed to be moving. Low back rounding at the bottom, or overextension at the top getting straightened out as you get to the bottom. What the kids call "butt wink." Point is, it's not that squats are inherently dangerous at all.

So , by setting the knees early . I assume the knees will not travel beyond the toes of the foot ? Or can the knees travel beyond the toes ? I’m a little confused on this .. any clarification will be helpful thanks🙏

You'll be safe setting them about right over your toes. They may be a little beyond. There's nothing inherently dangerous about that. Just try to keep them still once they're set at the beginning of the squat.

But are the quads not big+strong muscles that you need to use for a max squat?

@@startingstrength so why not mainly train those if you're already doing deadlifts? Knees are like any other joint--if you don't abuse them, they'll be fine

​@@mariomolnar3184 Think about this: Can you low bar squat more weight than you can high bar squat or front squat? What's the job of the knees in any squat variation? What muscles operate the knee joint? Does any squat variation change the nature of the movement enough that the knees are doing something different? If not, does high bar squatting 365 work the "knees" more or does low bar squatting 405 work the "knees" more? Which produces the biggest overall stress? After all, that's what we're looking for and not to work a specific body part. Does a 365 high bar squat fit better in a program designed for overall strength or does a 405 low bar?

@@startingstrength This answer contradicts the instruction in the video, which ruled out high bar and front squats by claiming the knees would drive forwards if you didn't bend your torso low. So according to the video, the knees do something different in high bar and front squats. I'd actually disagree with that, if your core is strong enough you can still establish your knees on your way down and still keep your torso upright.

Knees over toes guy has pretty well destroyed this myth that knees shouldn't go past the toes.

KOT guy dispells the myth that knees over toes is bad for knee health. That has _nothing_ to do with the coaching here. In the low bar squat, keeping the knees from going too far forward is not for knee health, but to keep the hamstrings operating a peak power.

Fyi in my experience this type of squatting is not for everyone, I used to squat like this and my low back was always right and sore even in my warmup sets

I love Starting Strength videos featuring female models. I'm Korean(South), and the weight training seems only for boys. It is hardly seen female people do squats with a barbell.Jealous!
