The toughest and most capable man I’ve ever known, someone who has been in many fight situations always stated that his number one piece of advice on fighting was to have a good ‘run game’. As capable as he was, he wasn’t stupid. Baseball bat, knife or multiple attackers, run.

It´s a shame some people still don´t get the point. As you said it, if possible, don´t be there. Everything else is when you have no choice. You can either do your best and fight back or f"#% stay still and die. I´d always go for option n.1. Great video man! Very good one.

The first option was like that statement, “if you are homeless than buy a house”. Sure no matter how much you you learn about ideal scenarios of self defence, they do not come practical in real life, it is as much predictable as the random patters of weather.

I managed to disarm someone three times who came after me with a magic marker about over 20 years ago in my 20's. Now I don't have the option of running like other people do because of a brain injury that I had when I was young that causes my body to have similar conditions to cerebral palsy, but because of it the brain rewires itself to it's conditions, so I have extremely fast hands. At that time I was taking Aikido, Filipino Pangamot, and Kyusho Jitsu from Dillman's camp. Now when the guy came after me with the marker it was way to fast to get a joint lock from Pangamot or Aikido, so I used Kyusho Jitsu where I timed his movement just right where when ever he came after me I backed knuckled a pressure point on the back of his hand which caused him to immediately drop the marker. I managed to do this three times to him. That's why I recommend that every martial artist learn Kyusho Jitsu or pressure fighting. Now you don't have to change your martial arts or style to learn Kyusho or Tuite Jitsu. All it is is a targeting system and you can bring it into any martial arts you want. You could even bring it into wrestling or western boxing if you wanted too.

You are the second video I saw on YT about a knife attack that actually makes sense. I've been thinking about a defense against a knife lately and if I could add something... 1. You have to be way, way faster than the attacker - develop the speed double his. 2. His right foot out - your right foot out - pivot to his outside: he'll have to re-adjust repeatedly and might get frustrated. 3. Grab him by the clothing by the wrist and sweep him. I used it a lot on the street because most untrained people tend to tense and get stiff in a fight which makes them very vulnerable to being thrown or swept easily ( judo ). 4. If you are not fast - just run and pray to God he isn't faster. 5. Assume every attacker has a knife on him.
@catocall7323
@catocall7323 2 күн бұрын
On point 1. timing beats speed. Being faster is better, but the ultimate decider is timing. Also, it's almost impossible to be twice as fast.
@marcelnowakowski945
@marcelnowakowski945 2 күн бұрын
@@catocall7323 It is very difficult but... An average guy's punch is about 1/5 sec / meter ( 3 feet ) A boxer's punch is about 1/10 sec / meter. Since this is not a fair play on his part... play his game and beat him at this! It's been 2 months since I started throwing knives. My thinking is to throw it from outside the danger zone which I estimate is about 4 feet for a guy with a knife. Let's say you are 7 to 10 feet away from him. A slight step back and a throw. No time for him to do anything. I throw no-spin ( very practical ), it is going amazingly good. Using Milwaukee "duct knife" ( 5.5" blade, looks like a military knife ) I got from Home Depot. Check out tutorials on YT. It's actually a great skill to have. No chance for a stabber...

Good stuff! Comes from a basic point of realistic "to do's" that are natural to our/their body mechanics of position. Run-distance, use any natural barriers for cover or eluding, and (find suitable hand held weapon from environment), and then if faced--strong motor blocking. Smart sequence to follow.

For any fighting situation run "if you can." But sometimes you can't because of age, injury, or you are with family, or in an enclosed space. Even if you are an expert, there is no guarantee that anything will work. Still it is better to practice something instead of nothing but don't count on anything working. I have done 60 years of a variety of martial arts.

Years ago I hosted a 'knife day' where about eight of us - all instructors in different arts - showcased and shared our super-duper knife defence strategies. The last session of the day, an instructor had brought along water soluable magic markers - the attacker attacked, each of us in turn tried our defensive moves and without exception everyone was badly 'cut' and several of us would have been dead if the attacker had been using a knife rather than a marker pen.... The lesson was obvious. Knife defence requires LOADS OF TRAINING and even more importantly LOADS AND LOADS OF LUCK !!!! As Mr Miyagi said in the Karate Kid movie - No be there !!!!!

@RobertAgarHutton
@RobertAgarHutton Ай бұрын
@@richardgallagher4880 Great question - the answer is none, on the whole we were working with avoiding and controlling the knife and then disabling the attacker - BUT unless you go full contact (which is not a good thing to do as every time you get knocked unconscious you kill some braincells!!!) you would not knock anyone out. Also, HOW do you knock someone out? Some people cannot take more than a light hit but some are 'ANIMALS' - look at professional boxing to see how hard it can be to knock someone out. Thus, avoiding and controlling and disabling is, as a general rule, perhaps a better option. By the way, as I said originally, surviving a knife attack is probably more about luck than skill :(

@@richardgallagher4880 - Sure you know when YOU have been hit good and sure when training your partner(s) will tell you the same - I was showing students a drill where you hit your partner with increasing prower, just latst Thursday - however that is completely different from a live encounter with an unknown attacker. It doesn't mean that you shouldn't try to get the knockout if the opportunity presents and you are a good enough hitter but what about the 'little old lady' or - in my case - little old man - who is attacked by a younger stronger person with a knife. It is not going to be your default option.

@shader26
@shader26 Ай бұрын
I’ve thought the same under for example gang attacks. Running can be good but it depends on a lot of things. I’m not in great shape, if I thought they wouldn’t chase would be a good option. Or running to a better defensive position (up a hill, towards obstacles or etc.) BUT…if you think they will chase, and if they are younger, you can end up winded from running and Adrenalin and then you are still in the same situation but now you are tired, worn out and still face the same attack. Also as I think you are pointing out, someone faster and with a knife may now be right up on you and from behind so you are in the worst situation. I did aikido for a few years, and the best I got out of it was that positioning, getting to the side and somewhat behind an attacker, as well as moving (if more than one attacker) so they are always en each others way. But add a knife or knives and …no easy solutions.

YEH - i was SHOCKED to have to get to about 20-30 years of age before i saw a police video on edged weapons before i realised HOW DANGEROUS a knife REALLY is!!! (I was already an expert at fighting and self-defense but was ignorant about several factors of how dangerous knives are). Even a 1 inch tiny knife cut in an artery (E.g. the face) which can make you bleed out really fast! A deep stab in the gut and you can end up having to use a colotomy bag for the rest of your life... {This was all in the context of why don't cops shoot ppl's legs or why do they even draw lethal force for a knife wielder.} The other reason is, the experiment about 'how fast someone can cover distance', before you can draw, aim and shoot!.... SHOCKING! A knife gives _anyone_ the power of/equivalent of 5-10 YEARS of real fighting experience/martial arts too!... 😲 Knives etc are ALWAYS WORSE THAN U IMAGINE, is what i am trying to say..... Keep away, keep away, keep away. If you are trapped, then ISOLATE THAT BLOODY ARM or try to kick kick kick, if you cannot... You just cannot risk repeated stabs... Jeeze, i would almost rather face a gun weilder than a knife weilder!!! A gun is only dangerous facing one way and won't cut you as u go to grab it, or the hand/arm holding it!!!

If a knife comes out and you can’t just run you WILL be cut. No matter how successful you are at winning the altercation you will at least have some serious cuts or stabs. It is just too easy for anyone with a knife to hurt another person in knife range. Goal is to make sure those cuts and stabs aren’t in something important while subduing the enemy.
@FunkerTactical
@FunkerTactical 9 ай бұрын
I understand what you’re saying. The idea is to accept the possibility of getting cut but it isn’t an inevitability.
@mrx2586
@mrx2586 8 ай бұрын
Every time I see someone parrot this I know they don't have a clue what they are talking about. A cut is NOT a certainly. A serious cut is NOT a certainly ( in fact studies have shown that 85% of all knife attacks which actually result in injuries are superficial). And cutting someone just because you have a knife is not easy - hitting someone who is resisting is hard for someone who has not practiced it a lot especially if the defender knows what they are doing.
@clintonsmith1114
@clintonsmith1114 8 ай бұрын
@@mrx2586 it’s incredibly easy! Knives are basically blood paint brushes for slashing and you can stab 2-3 times a second just hammer fisting a knife going to town on someone. That’s why knife murder often have absurd amounts of stab wounds. You can stab someone 30-40 times in as many seconds or less. One’s only option to avoid getting a knife inserted into your anatomy in some manner when a knife is an immediate danger is to run away. A fight is just preventing that insertion from being lethal before you gain victory and seek medical attention. In my time doing Silat my best outcome in a spar was a slashed wrist. If it was a real blade being used I still would have needed stitches and could have bled out. And we regularly do unarmed to knife, knife to knife, and knife to unarmed sparring and drills.

@@clintonsmith1114 There are multiple things wrong with your comment. running away is NOT the only way to " avoid getting a knife inserted into your anatomy in some manner" If I had a knife and I tried to attack ANY unarmed person with even MINIMAL experience of fighting I would fail miserably. That person would overpower me, get control of the knife and do whatever they want to me It would NOT BE POSSIBLE for me " stab 2-3 times a second" - It would not be able to stab them at all! it would NOT BE POSSIBLE for me to " stab someone 30-40 times in as many seconds or less" - It would not be able to stab them at all! If I really wanted to do a bit of harm to someone who has even minimal experience of being violent and all I had was knife I would prefer it if he tried to run away because that way I would actually have a chance. If he runs and I catch him I might be able to stab him once before he turns round, fights back and wins. Its very very unlikely and I would come off worse immediately after but at least I would have a chance. If he fights me he is certainly walking away unharmed. I would never attempt to use a knife to defend myself because as far as I am concerned I only have to try it with the wrong person and it becomes impossible. I have been doing full contact martial arts for almost 10 years now and I would rate your average persons chances as even worse than mine - at least I know that a knife is not enough to enable me to harm someone who is use to fighting and violence.

Like you said, it's better to run away. If you have a gun you're going to shoot without warning, for the simple reason that an armed attacker is ready to kill. So either you or he dies. If you can't run, if you don't have any tools within reach, give him your wallet if he doesn't want to kill you. Why ? Look for yourself, you have no chance against a skilled knife fighter. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hLFgZLybqKq2qYU.html

You forgot to include long stick and take off jacket … shirt… or pullover and flick it on the face and then instantaneous attack with a kick to the balls

@FunkerTactical I'm just a senior white belt in vee arnis but i take the instructors self defense course and knife class. Did to many medical issues that i have im unable to do most of the jujitsu part. We go over angles of attack so this video made so much sense but i think if you've never been on the mat people just don't get this vid. Even though i think you are very clear and informative in all your stuff. Sadly I've had to take a break from the class due to pain. I still do my drills and practice deploying my blades at home. You can learn a lot from videos but it means nothing unless you get actual training

Oh dear do you realise how misguided this video is? Real attack is a fast and chaotic thrusts, stabbings and slashing. What you propose is makes viewers believe that if they do what you say they will be able to defend themselves. Wrong.

Not true. He is talking about the fundamentals of knife defense. He even explained that it is better to avoid close quarters as much as possible in the beginning. The rest of the video explains what fundamental basics of knife defense you will need to avoid and survive a knife attack if you can’t escape. Not misleading at all. I think you are looking for a sure way to survive one but you will find there isn’t one. Because you have develop the skills first.

Exactly. He’s just breaking everything down. There would be no way to teach it while it’s happening in fast motion. Because if he did it in fast motion I guarantee you would say that you didn’t see it because it was too fast and asking to slow it down so you can learn . So the question for you is . What do you want ? Do you want to learn or do you want to ask more questions if you didn’t see the breakdown?
