Finally, the consistent objective test for the lock strength is here. In this video I subject 5 super popular knives to the constant force drop test to see which will hold and which unlock.

People discount a spine whack test. However, I've rocked a knife back and forth to get it out of material it's stuck in. I'm guessing it would put pressure on the spine of the knife. I enjoy these tests, if i want a slip joint I'll buy one. A locking knife should stay locked.

People that act like it’s meaningless are in denial. These knife companies are starting to charge 100s and 100s for these knives, they better lock. People that say it doesn’t matter really expose themselves as some suckers.

Very well done testing, consistent energy transfer and just an overall well setup simple lock testing rig showing resistance to failure in shock loads. No one else is testing the knives they are just promoting them. Keep doing good work, your going to blow up on youtube. As soon as you drop that one video that goes viral and it will happen.. your gonna pass 100k real quick and you deserve it! Putting the knives thru their paces and not just cutting a piece of paper and flicking it and saying it's a great knife. Keep on doing what your doing, don't sell out and you will get big on here!

The reviewers you speaking off usually follow a script that requires as little time spent on an individual video as possible. Plus there are startup channels that copy them in hopes of getting affiliate deals themselves. What we should do as a community, is call BladeHQ, DLT Trading, Remette, Vosteed, CIVIVI, Artisan etc. and demand discount equal to the commission they pay to you know who.

I appreciate what you are doing with your testing. You're correct in that most channels do not do this. I would guess a lot of it has to do with the fact that most people aren't willing to sacrifice their knives because they/we pay a lot of money for them. I now typically only watch you and Pete from Cedric and Ada. He does a lot of edge retention testing. I learn so much from both of you, and it's so much better than the shills who sit there doing their unboxing and taking two minutes to show the pretty box and the paperwork inside of it. Then they talk about how great the knife is while flicking it as many ways as possible for the duration of the videos. I find those videos insufferable. Thank you for the education and entertainment.

I'm not trying to take away anything from other knife channels, some of which I love and support (e.g., Jerad Neeves's channel). Really appreciate your support for the channel! I will definitely include this test in my future reviews! I like where Jared is heading and also support his channel through use of links (that’s where the Remette and Reate came from) and I purchased the T. Kell Neeves Karambit. He’s really smart on how he sets the design parameters first and then ensures meticulous execution. Don’t know how else to put this: Petersen keeps trying to come up with a “Bugout killer” and Neeves is trying to come up with a great Neeves Knife.

I like this test even for the entertainment value. I got into knives during the old Cold Steel days of weight hangs and spine wacks and they do offer more information to the buyer so then the buyer is more educated and therefore knows what they are getting. I find it interesting as a new viewer of yours, that the knife community is not without drama like other hobbies. I notice some hate from another person who I don’t follow but I feel like there is enough space for everyone and you are adding positively to the community.

I have that same press for my leather stamping and punching lol. It’s the best you can get for the price. I remember within the last few years a channel that tested folding knives locks pulling on them using a lbs scale to measure the amount needed to fail them. That was great.
@CuttingBoardRx
@CuttingBoardRx 2 ай бұрын
Completely different test. That was Benchmade testing iconic knives like Griptilian and Osborne 940 on a 2 ton hydraulic press. Lab scales? Lol. 😂 Unfortunately the industry stopped showing anything that makes their lawyers and liability insurance providers unhappy. This is a dynamic test here because it illuminates static lock-up. I’m not testing strength of the lock, rather it’s ability to stay engage through the impulse input event. And the impulse of 13.6 lbf•s is quite very low. Benchmade was trying to impress the world with how strong the Axis lock is, while I’m trying to show how easily poorly designed locks can disengage under even a lite stress.

I think these types of tests are very valid and informative, locks are a very touchy subject because it’s an open secret that many many popular knives on the market have suprisingly weak locks. Fanboys spend a lot of money on their favorite brands so they get defensive and combative when their favorite brands are put to the test and fail. They’ve spent a lot of money and feel the need to justify their purchases. The purpose of a lock on a knife should be to LOCK the knife, period.

I thought you concluded the msi will stay locked in a previous video claiming it had been a fixed problem? I bought a msi after that video.. was that a current msi model from 2024? And should I have concern to test my own knife?
@CuttingBoardRx
@CuttingBoardRx 2 ай бұрын
It is possible that you are referring to the video where I fixed my first MSI which was dated 8/23, it has a stone washed blade. The one in this video is dated 11/23 and has a two-tone blade. I also posted a video about the fix that was quietly implemented by MT around February of this year, however, if you read some of the comments, folks are reporting inconsistent results. I don’t encourage anyone to repeat any of my tests and demonstrations because they are not safe and may lead to a serious injury.

It's hard to be sure, but it seems like the spyderco handle is allowed to flex up, which will have absorbed a lot of impulse. If you made the test a regular feature, the handle needs to be held down.

I would have think the ram lock sturdier than others. So, this knife is expensive, low end steel (S35VN  at this price, come on), has a fat stock and narrow bevels so it won’t cut well, and in addition, the lock is shit. I think the hype is a little too much on this knife !

Microtech should have recalled -- and still should recall -- its pre-redesign Ram-Lok knives. If ever there was a case for a class action suit against a knife manufacturer, this is it.
@CuttingBoardRx
@CuttingBoardRx 2 ай бұрын
I think threatening Marfiones with a law suit will only make them less humble and more obnoxious because then they will be able to claim being a victim. Nor do we want a gag order on this because that would lead to less transparency. Public humiliation is a good reminder to the industry that not all influencers are for sale. Those promoting the knife deserve their share of crow pie as well.
@EDCandLace

Marfione could be sued out of business and he would still be as arrogant as he is today. Like CBR a gag order would not be good for the community and a 5 dollar check from a class action won't benefit no one but the law group that accepts the case. Like CBR said public humiliation is the best way to create some humbleness.
