Barbershop Customs

This time we have decided to make something we haven't done yet - a straight razor from Barbershop Customs' logo. It was a challenging project, but we're happy with the result.
We do not have a grinding wheel, so we had to get creative with the hollow grind.

Those scales look like they are a quarter inch thick each! Must be heavy to shave with. Generally I think straight razor scales don't rest the blade edge on wood as the point of a straight is to be as sharp as possible constantly. Also are there washers between the scales and blade? Maybe that just didn't get recorded.

@@BarbershopCustoms Still looking to get that bandsaw? Or did the jigsaw just make filming the scale cutting easier? Good work I enjoyed the video ignore my sarcastic jab above, all in good fun. A couple of others pointed out that the edge really shouldn't touch the wood which is certainly true. And the geometry of that blade might make honing difficult though I can't say for sure. I've only honed razors with traditional geometry. Out or curiosity, was that your first time trying a straight razor? If it was I'm assuming your edge wasn't properly finished. There is a significant difference between shaving your arm, and shaving your face comfortably. It takes a bit of patience to set a bevel on a 1k stone. And then take it through a progression of at least a couple of stones to get that buttery (no pulling) shave.

The geometry is pretty bad on that razor... the bevel is huge and wavy (from what i could see). You spine needs to be thicker or move your double grind higher.

It would help if you shaved a part of your face that actually had hair and even the shaving cream on the blade you couldn't see any hair. You did a great job why not show off how good it really is?

I can't stand watching guys do the quick short strokes over the same spot, that's how you irritate the skin and get cut. If you make one nice sweep the tension of the skin keeps the pressure even across the blade and you won't get cut, plus you'll have a cleaner, closer shave and no irritation.
