Hi! My channel reached 1000 subs recently. Thanks for that!
In this video I make the double leuku. It consists of leuku and puukko knives and one sheath. The blades I'm using are forged by Finnish bladesmith Jaaranen. The leuku blade length is 180mm and the puukko blade 90mm. Both blades are carbonsteel.
The handles of both knives are made out of spalted birch, birch bark, moose/reindeer antler and bronze bolster.
Music in this video is my own production.

I hope you like the video!

I know that this is an old video but here goes anyway. I’m building quite a few knives a month lately and while I don’t have access to that particular type of Birch, I can use a spalted Maple that is almost identical. As you have mentioned the softness of the “Spalted” material and I have noticed it as well. I am intending to try out a product called “Cactus Juice” that actually hardens softer wood. I would like to purchase some of that fancy birch but the price from the supplier I use is outrageous. So my Maple will be almost a direct replacement. Well you might want to try that Cactus Juice on some of the softer stuff so that it can be made to be useful for a knife handle.

'Wonderful deuce! That spalted birch burl is beautiful. Yes, that soft spot can happen with that spalted wood, which is basically perfectly timed degrading wood. Sorry you had to redo, but the results are spectacular. I had a friend who crafted ink pens from turned wood. He called that type of wood "splatted" wood!😂I am now inspired to make a side-by-side knife deuce, more in the American frontier tradition. 'Hope to be free to try that soon. Thanks again, brother. Wicked awesome build man but you should get wood stabilized especially soft wood like spalted birch, and use blades that have a radius in the tang-blade transition instead of 90 degree corners as it could make a weak spot. Its a little more filing to get it to fit with no gaps but it makes a stronger overall construction.

Theres really no need to stabilize the wood thats most finnish knives. They also are fairly resilient to enviroment if you just add some kinda oil or something occasionally, but i have never had any kinda issues personally. I just do pretty much same thing with unstabalized wooden handle on knife like any wood handle on different tools

You don't need a vacuum chamber, I mean, it helps but it's not vital, any old bowl will do, just weight down the wood... a lot of woodturners I watch here seem to swear by it.@@kiehicraft

Good work on the handle et sheath but the blades aren't as good quality. The bevels aren't very clean, they look like they've been made with an angle grinder without any proper finish. Also, I think there is a crack on the edge of the bigger blade near the ricasso. It's small but it may cause the knife to break or the edge to chip during use.
@kiehicraft
