In this video you'll see the process of making a Finnish style knife (puukko) with Saami style carvings. I am not an expert in puukko knife but I'm fascinated by how usefull and beautiful they are.
Knife making is my hobby and I like to learn new stuff and sharing the process with others. So in every new video I try to experiment new things and implement them.
This time I wanted to try : antler bolster, Saami style carvings, dying the sheath with two tones and making a Saami style leather loop to hang the knife.
At first I wanted to make a simple puukko without anything fancy on it, no brass bolster or such things. But I ended up adding some Saami style carvings because I have never done it on a knife before. The only time I've done it was on a test piece you can see at some point in this video.
I struggled to find an appropriate colouring product to fill up the carvings. Everytime I wanted to polish the knife after colouring the carvings, it was smearing all over the polishing wheel, staining the wood around.
In the end I used a permanent marker. So if there's some experts out there I would like to hear about what product you are using.
The specs :
Blade - Puronvarsi 90mm hunter carbon steel
Bolster - Reindeer antler
Spacers - Leather and fake ivory (Elforyn)
Handle - Curly birch from finland
Sheath - Maple wood insert and cow leather
Loop - Goat leather
Glue - Epoxy
Finishing - Carnauba wax

My wife went to Sweden about 20 years ago, and she brought me back a "Sammi Knife" as a gift cuz I used to work with Alaska Native reindeer herders. It's exactly like your knife, except the sheath uses some exposed reindeer antler with carvings/scrimshaw instead of the wood you used. Your craftsmanship is excellent. I've dressed out at least a dozen caribou plus a moose, a brown bear and a couple of black bears. I wouldn't use it if it didn't work great for the job and fit my hand so nicely. I worry about my first finger slipping/choking up onto the blade and cutting myself but that hasn't happened (yet). It also holds an edge very well. Plus it's beautiful and it's authentic. And now I know it's called a "Puukko Knife." Thank you for sharing the culture with your great photography and skills.

I just made a puukko knife using a YP Taonta blade.I used hand cut stacked leather for the handle,as well as a brass bolster and handmade brass butt cap. Then I made a Sami style antler and leather sheath for it.I'd like to learn how to do the artwork on the antler.I used elk antler for my sheath. You did a nice job on the Sami style artwork.

Very nice knife! Expecting an order tomorrow from brisa with the stuff to make a knife for the first time., the thread on the back of the tang is new to me but i like the idea and maybe will do the same, cause i forgot to order a backplate and don’t want to rely on glue alone.. Again , masterpiece maybe because of it’s relatively simplicity

Excellent Video! Thank You Sir. Piece of advice from an old mechanic: When you mix your epoxy mix it on a piece of steel with a piece of steel. The paper you used here will absorb some of the aromatic solvents in the epoxy and throw the 2 part mixture off a bit which can and will affect long-term durability. The steel is easy to clean with a wire wheel or grinder/cup brush and is forever reusable. Great Channel BTW!
