Wow. This steel gave me fits. I was not prepared, nor aware, custom heat treats, could make 20cv such a task. The paperwork, that came with the knife, states the HRC is 61-62. Now that I have put it to stones, I am really looking forward to actually using it! I have high expectations, for how well it will perform. I will, no doubt, report back, once I've dulled it.

Willie nielli ha. Jeff I could watch u shatpen all day. And your edges are so consistent heel to tip! I couldn't belive the hardness of that 20cv wow.

Lol. I am getting old -willie nilli- I dunno if the hardness played a role, or what. It gave me a run for my money, that is for certain.

in my experince that 320 sp will get it but it likes more heavy pressure... the issue then is it breaks down fairly quicky and creates a lot of mud... which kinda cloggs the stone from cutting well but it seems to work well on wider bevels more so than most sp stones. but those are a sic abrasive, so they can cut steel like that just fine. shapton themselves like to claim to the 220 is for hss whereas the 320 is better for high carbon steel, but far as I can tell they're the same just one is sligtly finer.

Exactly! Shows ya pics from start to finish. Can't ask for much more. I like how the cant of the blade, is angled just slightly, towards your working area. Reminds me of my Dalton 06/1 in that respect.

Beautiful blades Jef. It’s interesting that you had to keep changing abrasives to get it to cut the steel for you. Thanks for sharing brother 👊🍻

Just needed to find the right one. The 320 Shapton was cutting, although not as quickly as I wanted. One side was just not reaching the apex. Just goes to show, start with the proper stones, and you will have fewer headaches.

Got a Wells coming in the next couple weeks. Blade is currently out for heat treat. M2 steel at 63-64HRC drop point with a compound hollow grind. Can't wait.

Compound hollow? That sounds pretty dope! I should have mentioned ask these were hollow grinds. The blue one i mentioned was ground real thin. It’s wicked. For the price i think you are going to be very happy with your knife. He seems to genuinely care if there are flaws, and wants to make them right. So if you have problems do reach out to him

@@Jef yeah, compound hollow like on a 229 or J-cape. Really excited because I've never seen a negative review or word said about his knives.

Lucky dog! Knife Sharpening Norway keeps singing the praises of Magnacut. I haven't had the pleasure of rubbing it across any abrasives yet. I'm always last to the boutique steel party's.

:D They are priced close to a Microtech knife. I do admit, I've slowed way down in my knife purchasing as of late. Things are getting more expensive, and quality isn't meeting my expectations.

Hey Jeff was wondering what you thought of the new king neo stones? Just pulled the trigger from mtc for 38.oo

From what I’ve seen there is only one. An 800 grit. If they ever have more available I’ll prob check them out. As it is, i don’t have much use for it so I’ve never bought one. Wish i could tell ya more. Triple b seems to love his. If he says it is good, it’s good 👍 😁

Hey Jef, thanks for another great video, I've been using a Sabatori rust eraser (medium) to clean out my Venev Dragon stones when they load up. They don't remove any diamond, just steel. A Burfection tip.
@Jef
@Jef Жыл бұрын
Useful tip, but sometimes, you want to remove that resin bonding, to expose new diamonds. A rust eraser wont do this. I would recommend getting a small piece of Sic, from a cheap hardware stone, perhaps. Use a hacksaw to cut it. There are videos online that demonstrate how to do it. Or just use the entire stone. It'll work either way :)

@@Jef Tanks Jef, yes when I want to freshen up the diamonds my Nagura's work but take a lot of stone colour/grit off, so I use sparingly, hence the rust eraser in between. Keep well and the video's coming. Thanks again.

@@jc2557 I use plastic abrasive on my resin stones... such as the stuff magic erasers are made of. it works and doesn't wear the stone fast... if i want to flatten and actually do that I do that with something else. but just to clear swarf or clogging I use the more gentle solution.

One purdy knife. Some steels with some heat treats sometimes just beat your ass haha both my magnacut blades from aaron johnson abrades slower on my Stones than a lionsteel m 390 blade. My magnacut outdoor blade is 63 hrc the chef knife 64 hrc both takes the most lovely edge

Has to be well over 60, no way Shapton pro 320 would had issues with 20cv (M390) at 60HRC, also the geometry that thin, mr Wells has confidence in his work. Had to check your CPM 20CV M390 videos, my Bugout in M390 is tough to sharpen too, but Cold Steel S35VN even tougher for some reason, even with diamonds, feels tougher than Spyderco K390, crazy, idk. Cheers boss!
@Jef
@Jef Жыл бұрын
Yup I’ve rarely had issue sharpening this steel with my Shapton pro stones. This particular blade, gave me fits initially. Once i swapped to more aggressive abrasives, it was a breeze. I’ve only got one knife from cold steel in s35vn. I haven’t sharpened it yet, but now you got me curious 😁. Same for my Bugout. I have one in 20cv. Not sure about m390. Will have to look at em

when you manually aka not powered grinding on diamonds the difference between 3% vanadium and 9% vanadium really doesn't matter. diamonds cut it all abut the same, as far as how it's gonna feel manually grinding. anyway, hrc scale isn't linear, meaning 60 to 65 is quite a bit more than 55 to 60, but in terms of abrasion resistance like say what they measure on a catra test, each hrc point adds between 1% to 2% in terms of abrasion resistance. thats for the same steel ofc. So it's not really as big factor like some think. what really counts is just carbide quantity and type. also the actual size of the carbide clusters in the steel is often more of a factor than the 7 or 8% difference you'd get from 5 hrc .

It is a plauge dr. During the black plauge, they thought it was airborne (fleas from rats were the culprit). These masks were meant to help filter the air. They also kept Herb’s and other astringent things in the tip, to help mask the smell of the dead. Not to mention, the conditions most were found in, were deplorable. One can only imagine how awful the smell would have been. A lot of history there, but i mainly just dig the aesthetic 😁
