Thanks for explaining what you did on the vine work. Most don't. I like your style. - Jerry

Hi Alan, Quick tip: Files only cut on the forward stroke due to the nature of the teeth, when you put pressure on during the back stroke you aren't doing any cutting, just rounding over the teeth and dulling the file. So if you lift the file on the back stroke you will dramatically increase the life of you files. Cheers

Hey what he is saying is true tho, and if I was doing this kind of work, I would definitely want as much life out of my tools as possible!! Its a good tip, ive got the same criticism once, and got humbled but im thankful cus my files last a lot longer!! No BS

I tried this on my opinel´s spine and now it looks like I have a double bladed knife, one side with enough "decorative" serration to cut bread. Everything looks easy when you have years of experience under your belt.

Can you do this along the spine of an already forged knife that's been heat treated?

You wouldn't be able to do it with files. But you might be able to do something using a dremel and some grinding bits.
