Congratulations DCA, both you and Thomas have been chosen to be contestants on the History Channel Alone Series. You have both decided to take a bushcraft knife, a small axe, a saw and a multitool as part of your 10 allowed items all of which are available at KnifeCenter. What did you both choose?

Great question! Knife: Esee 6 with machined 3D Micarta scales. Saw: Silky Sugoi or Zubat, nothing with a folding handle and no brand but Silky deserves consideration. Axe: not really needed with the Esee, I’d take either food or more ways to catch food. If I’m getting an axe as a free choice, it’s going to be the one I took to Alaska with us when we moved up there to live: Gränsfors Bruks Scandinavian Axe. Since Knifecenter doesn’t carry Gränsfors Bruks, I’d take a Hults Bruk Akka, the closest equivalent.

Hey ya'll. Long time listener, first time caller. My question is about DLC coatings on blades. It is my understanding that the purpose of DLC is to provide a very tough, scratch-resistant coating on a blade. My surface level googling reveals that the hardness of DLC is in the 80-98 Rockwell range. How does this affect the ease of sharpening once you reach the DLC coating, and are there any special measures that need to be taken to sharpen a knife with a DLC coated blade?

machete is thin flexible blade meant for brush clearing, big knife is meant for actual slicing cuts or chopping cuts as opposed to hacking quickly like a machete. a big knife will be much thicker and much heavier than a small machete. look at a becker bk9 vs a tramontina 12 inch machete for a good example

To the survival knife for the truck question - Knife Center currently has the Ontario RAT Nr. 7 on sale for $92, so you could save $50 vs the Becker. Also made in the USA, Micarta scales, 7" coated carbon steel 0.19" = 3/16" blade (not 0.14" like on the Knife Center website according to Ontario Knife) and a decent size for most tasks including batoning and chopping. Could even be used for tactical applications in a pinch.

@@acid6urns True, but for 2/3 the price of Becker you are getting the same steel and Micarta scales which you can mod to fit your hand. As a truck knife you can depend on when needed, I think it would be OK.

Hi DCA and Thomas! My favorite handle material is polar bear tooth. My grandpa who passed away a few years ago made a file knife using a dead polar bears K-9 as the handle. It’s natural swell makes it really comfortable. It is one of a kind and rare with the odds of finding a dead polar bear while in Alaska and making something by hand all to be passed it down makes it the best to me by far.

My favorite knife handle material kinda depends on what I'm carrying. If it's an old school slipjoint, then no question, it's bone, and I prefer shades of brown or green but I also have slipjoints with scales of various other materials. If it's a fixed blade or old school lockback, I prefer wood, again, obviously, in shades of brown. If it's a modern folder then I'm good with just about anything. I've got a 26 year old Benchmade Mini Griptilian with just plain black plastic handle that has served well for 26 years and still going strong, I also have a Benchmade Mini Osbourne with green aluminum handle that's perfectly fine with me, as well as some Spydercos with plastic and G10 scales. For kitchen knives, I also prefer wood. I have three Shun knives that are my go to knives and they have the black resin impregnated wooden handles that just feel good and don't get slippery. I also have some 60ish year old Ontario and Old Hickory kitchen knives with wooden handles that I use occasionally.

Fav Handle/Scale Materials: For Folders… • 1st - Carbon Fiber • 2nd - Aluminum …because they are the highest strength to weight ratio, while also offering premium feel and and unlimited shape/design capabilities. For fixed blade, paracord wrap, it offers versatile color & grip customization options while keeping the knife insanely light.

Hi, Love the channel. I have begun some knife collecting and I have been concerned about the effects of time on knives. Even for a stainless knife, would rust build up on the edge if one doesn't oil it and compromise its ability to cut? Does the sharpness of knives mean much when you're collecting knives? Is the factory edge sufficient? I do at least want to entertain that I can pick up any of the knives I collect on a moment's notice and use it as it was intended.

Ah, the other KnifeCenter burlap micarta exclusive wasn't on the table... that Spyderco Shaman in S90V is long gone though and apparently pricey on the secondary market. It's neat, but the action on my specific one isn't great. I polished up the liners and washers and played around with the pivot tension and it helped a bit. Seems like the Compression lockbar has too much tension on it as if it's fully disengaged from the blade, the action is decent now, and it takes much more force to disengage than my other Compression locks. Haven't taken it apart again to try that. Suppose I could try a CME instead to get extra leverage 🤷‍♂ Burlap Micarta's flavor to me is Root Beer. Old Timey, complex, hits the spot, but maybe not for everyone.

I feel that for the truck survival kit another right answer could be the Cold Steel SRK in SK5. Around half the price of the price of the BK-9. Smaller (just a couple of inches) but easier to carry around when you have to use it.
@acid6urns
@acid6urns 14 күн бұрын
id argue a cold steel master hunter in 3v (or the san mai if you want corrosion resistance) or the srk c in 3v would be better choices, mainly because 3v is tougher, has better edge retention, AND while 3v isn’t a stainless steel it is MUCH more corrosion resistant than a pure carbon steel like sk5. even the san mai knives while having less toughness (vg10 is still tough enough, especially if fallkniven uses it on their survival knives) are fully stainless and still outclass the sk5 in edge retention. if you’re on an ultra budget though the srk/ srk c in sk5 are absolutely excellent options under $50.
@Em54699
@Em54699 14 күн бұрын
@@acid6urns I agree, the master hunter in 3v would be a great choice. However a part of the question that I feel DCA kinda forgot was the part where the knife would mostly be mostly sit unused AND he doesn't want it to cost a fortune. Just going with the logic of a knife that you don't mind not using after buying and keeping it as low cost as possible, my first thought was a mora, but I feel it wouldn't be good enough for a pure survival knife. That's why I think the SRK would be the optimal choice. Cheap enough to not break the bank, and ready to be abused when it's needed. Also, if it's a truck kit usually trucks are not that humid in the inside so I feel corrosion resistance while not in use is not that much of an issue. Thoughts? Also without the budget situation I would also recommend the Lionsteel T5.

Check the 'Beat the Icon' about the Mora to see better what I am talking about, also in 158 you set the Mora down facing your left and immediately turned it over facing your right.

Hey dca I know you have answered this question before. Including mine about best first knife you would get a kid. My question was very specific but I'm curious. I know your a father what knife will you choose for your kid when the time comes? A mora? Possibly a buck 110? Or something else? Interested to hear what you would pick

I like G10. It's strong, comes in any color, easily contoured, and comes with varying textures. Although G10 is now found on a lot of budget knives, I still think it's best. There are knives, many from Cold Steel, that don't even have steel liners and rely solely on the G10 for their structural integrity. You can't do that with micarta.

Favorite handle materials: 1. Wood 2. Aluminum 3. Titanium 4. G10 5. Carbon fiber 6. Micarta 7. FRN/GRN and other plastics (ultem, zytel, etc) 8. Bone and antler 9. Stainless steel 10. Carbon fiber variations (Fat carbon, shredded carbon) - these come in last because they're almost always dead ugly, not for any functional reasons.

Burlap micarta is not my favorite material but I do have a “flavor” suggestion. Burlap micarta is definitely Milk Duds! When you squish a Milk Dud it looks just like the fibers in burlap micarta!

Cold Steel Recon is the most aggressive G10 I have ever handled. Anyone know of other knives with that type of G10?

Do you know any kitchen knives with scandi grind? The reason I ask is because scandi grind helps me prevent cutting my fingers when chopping parsley, for example.

Hello DCA and team, I have a tough one for you. I recently moved to the beach and I am having issues with the knives I typically carry. Every few days I have to take apart my knives to clean them because no matter what I do, fine pieces of sand find their way into the inner workings of the knife and make my fidgeting horribly unsatisfying. I need your help finding a very corrosion-resistant, sand-proof/easy-to-clean, left-hand-friendly, knife. I am a huge fan of classy and fidgety folders but I am open to anything you feel fits my needs. No particular budget but nothing too crazy. Thank you and keep up the good work.

spyderco native 5 salt in magnacut or the spyderco pacific salt in lc200n. you can also go for the paramilitary 2 salt in magnacut, as it has a dlc coating and so quite literally will not rust (though magnacut is essentially rust proof already) and the compression lock is much less susceptible to sand and grit because of the open back construction. the pm2 is also really easy to disassemble, and while the compression lock isn’t great for lefties you can buy these button things that make actuating the lock with your left hand super easy.

Hey DCA, I eat a steak for dinner at least 3 nights a week, and as a steak guy and a knife guy, I'm a little embarrassed of my steak knives. What would you recommend for steak knives?

Hi DCA & T!!! Been a follower since day 1 and I remember when you were asking people to subscribe to reach the 100k subs, and now we are almost 500k, greatest knife channel, my question is (actually 2), 1st: my wife gave me a German kitchen knives set (Bare Knives) which is pretty good looking and also super sharp out of the box, but even though I've been looking everywhere to find out if they are full tang or not, I haven't been able to, so the question is, is it important or not to have full tang on kitchen knives?, 2nd: I bough the Pocket Tango with wood handles and I love it, but soon after I bought it I saw the exclusive edition and it was too late because my knife was already shipped, so the question is, are you planning on selling different scales to dress it up depending on the occasion? Thx in advance!!
