Sebenza all the way for me. I own a large in micarta scales and s30v, use it every day it's my work knife. Over 10 years now.. And a few years after that I bought a small naked insingo in 35v for street carry. Both - absolute perfection. Healed me from buying in between knives, all I buy now are small fixed blades, just for love of knives. Peace.

DCA - spot on advice re. buying a CRK Sebenza as a forever knife. I would also recommend buying a couple of cheap knives in different styles and sizes to find out what a person likes rather than relying on opinions of others. Sebenzas are great knives but I'd hate to drop $400+ on a knife that I hate because it's too big or too heavy or whatever. Finally - love your integrity. Many outlets would just push for the sale of the expensive knife without any advice. Thanks for the vid.

@lit sci ;-). There are no such knives. Frogs (legs only) don't need a specific knife as it's like chicken flesh. Snails are taken out from their shell using a thin fork with 2 teeth when they are cooked. Oyster knife is usually a short, but large leaf blade to allow prying when the blade is in.

been loving these FAQs, I've been thinking about this for a while and I haven't gotten a good answer for it. So I have a Sebenza 31 in Damascus and I was wondering how the Damascus compares in its retention, corrosion resistance and ease of sharpening to their standard blade steals.
@jolness1
@jolness1 2 жыл бұрын
Very well put David. Sebenza is worth the money no question. As far as a "sacrifice in blade steel", CRK does their s35vn and s45vn as well as anyone and it outperforms most 20CV I have in edge retention, a lot of that comes down to edge geometry though. I think people get so hung up on edge retention because they are not willing to learn to sharpen. So many people I know just buy a new ($200+) knife and then stick their old, dull one in a drawer. Family friend used a BG42 sebenza (and I mean *used*, he used to to dress a few animals in the field around me in a pinch, along with everything else) from the late 90s until he passed in 2017. It had lost a little blade material but without another to compare it to, impossible to tell. If you know how to sharpen properly, you can make even a knife with a flat grind stay nice and slicey for decades. With the CRK hollow grind, I know I could use any of mine for the rest of my life as my only knife and never need a blade replacement or lose any cutting performance. Plus, they have some of the best service in the industry and when you hold one, you can tell where the money went. ZT makes nice stuff but I don't think it compares outside of on paper to any CRK. Plus it can be sharpened in the field.

As far as having your blade rust while in your pocket during a sweaty day I found that having a little silicate packet in my pocket works wonders to keep everything dry. You must be sure that you replace them frequently as rolling around in your pocket can thin the material of the packet and/ or break them open. It works for me.

Sebenza with Magnacut blade and Glass Blasted instead of sand blasted gets that smooth feel with an insanely durable blade. You can adjust the action on the CRK lines (Inkosi, Zaan, easier than Sebenza) and they're incredibly easy to break down and clean. Customer service and the warranty/spa service speak to the value of a CRK. It's such a well put together tool that you can pass along to younger generations.

He covered all the main points. I have both. The Sebenza has a very nice hollow ground blade. The ZT is 10x better opening and closing because of the bearings. The ZT is heavy beast The Sebenza has a pointy thumb stud that is uncomfortable, and you might only be able to slow roll it our. I was able to adjust my Sebenza to flick out and almost drop shut, but still slower than the ZT. I carrry the ZT more often because it opens and closes better. I have a large Sebenza 31 (and several other CRK's). While CRK's are built well, I feel others have caught up in recent years. CRK's are ok, but they seem to stick with older designs/technology. I actually sharpened my 31 just today; the knife was pretty thick behind the edge, and the factory sharpening job was done at about 26 degrees per side. I also feel they are slightly overpriced for what they are. They were awesome during their heyday, a decade or two ago, but now they are just a nicely built old-school knife. Just IMO of course.

I bought a small Sabenza 31, the standard version without inlays. Was only carrying it on special occasions such as weddings and the like and have just recently started carrying it on normal days. One thing that struck me odd considering it reached over $400 after taxes was the way the tip of the knife cuts into their lanyard they installed. Uhhhhhh that’s a terrible design if your knife is damaging itself. I just cut it off in the end. Other than that, I like the tightness and attention to detail(not sure why this attention wasn’t given to the proximity of the lanyard hole to the knife tip) with the rest of the piece.

as an owner and user of over 70 knives (I have both the sabenza and the ZT) I would advise to start by knowing what is the intended use for the knife. In my opinion there is not a single knife that is good for everything. for example, I've had an endura in 189 which is a wonderfull steel for cutting. when i took in to the woods, the first strike I've made to cut wood, the knife broke because of the brittleness of the hard steels. trying to say, FIRST - know what is the intended use, and SECOND - decide what is the knife FOR THE JOB. for a beater knife I would go for the cold steel recon1 (in tanto). but each to his own... :)

The comparison isn't Sebenza vs 0562, but Sebenza vs XM18. The 0562, while still amazing, is a mass market copy. That's why it's cheaper. I have a 21 and a 0562 and the build quality is not the same. Is the Sebenza worth it? Chris Reeve knives are designed to be user-servicable. The bronze washers leave you with no bearings to lose. Each one comes with disassembly & maintenence instructions. The blade geometry is designed to withstand sharpening. It is an heirloom knife. $500 for this knife is really a $25/year knife over 20 years. If you can keep a knife that long, it will still serve you well.

Hey DCA. I love the videos. Keep it up. My question is about blade Steel. I have knives with m390 steel. They hold an edge forever. However, the average Normie doesn't need high-end Steel. I personally prefer a good budget Steel. Like my Civivi Brazen in Damascus. 9cr based. Tell me what you think of the 10cr Civivi is using now. I don't know much about it in comparison to 9 CR. Thanks.
@keats27
@keats27 2 жыл бұрын
Is it worth it? Depends on your situation. Sebenza is a FANTASTIC knife. I would not buy one today. One more thing to consider in ZT vs. CRK, LOOK AT THE LOCKUP. NOT ALL LOCKUPS ARE THE SAME. I can tell you from first-hand experience that the CRK frame lock is AWESOME. I have no idea how good the ZT lock up is. I can tell by looking at the lock from the little visibility we're given that the CRK is a step closer to a fixed blade when open. Not saying you'll ever REALLY need that or that the ZT's lockup is bad, but....for my better than $300 bucks, I'll take the better lock. Also, from first-hand experience, S45VN is freaking awesome steel. My Sebenza is in S30V, but I have the Paramilitary 2 in S45VN, and I love that steel. It's a supersteel. There is a trade off with the 20CV. I don't think you're giving up much on the S45VN. Do the work, look up the two steels, see where you want to be on the tradeoff because it does matter depending on how you expect to use it--not everybody wants a knife for average, every day breaking down boxes. My Sebenza is an older one (2008), and while it is smooth, it's not flicky. If you want flicky, the ZT is your boy. Both are great knives--my preference is the Sebenza.

I've always wondered why they're priced like that but after handling it, I got it. but I did not get the Sebenza but instead got the Large Inkosi in left hand configuration since I am a lefty and appeals to me more. the steel was S35VN and it's a happy medium when it comes to sharpening compared to 20CV or M390 which takes some time to sharpen. I was also surprised of the convex grind as I usually freehand my knives (been taught how to sharpen when I was 8 by my grandfather).

All steel is easy to sharpen if you have the right system. A strop is a knifes best friend overall. The rocksteads are razor sharp after I take em to a strop. I made a lot of mistakes at first trying too hard. Now it's blindfolded.

Worth every penny. The CRK Sebenza is the greatest designed & manufactured folding pocket knife ever. It can not be bested for quality of manufacturing tolerances, overall lock strength, comfort in hand/pocket, hollow grind for real cutting use, best pocket clip ever, etc. Hands down the best buy once, cry once purchase that will be an heirloom item to hand down after a lifetime of use.

Did you just say the sebenza has the strongest overall lock strength? Thats the best joke I've heard all week. Titanium frame lock with slippery ceramic ball sliding against slippery steel? Easily the best joke I've heard 😂 especially since almost all the new sebenza 31's are suffering from lock rock all over the knife community. Get your facts right before posting fan boy.

When I first started collecting knives, I couldn't understand how anyone could pay that much for a Chris Reeve knife and think it was worth it. Today it just makes me feel dumb for ever thinking that at all. The Large Sebenza 31 is one of the most perfect folding knives ever made and worth every penny.

Hi DCA and Truck guy! I like the feel of titanium handles (my flytanium delica is super comfy) and the action of a frame lock (my ZT 0450 is super snappy) but don't like the lock bar pressure issues. I was looking for a combo of the two. Can you suggest a titanium handled liner lock edc that is both comfy and snappy? Thanks.

Hey DCA! My question is , which knife would be best to use to slice pineapple to put onto pizza? It has to be able to do a lot of cutting since I basically like to cover my pizza in about an inch or two of pineapple, and it should also be acid resistant since pizza pineapple is very acidic. Also it should be able to slice through the pizza when it is done with ease. I do not want any of my precious pizza pineapple falling off my slices. Thank you for all you do DCA!

Hey, DCA! Hey, dude behind the camera that I forgot the name of! 😃 A friend recently gifted me his very first knife, a Boy Scout knife made by Imperial some time in the 50’s. I started using it right away and noticed that the main blade sliced through material much more easily than a lot of my other knives, yet it had the positive feedback of a sturdier edge. (You know how you can kinda feel a thinner edge squash slightly on more forceful cuts?) I got curious and looked it over, and saw that it has a brilliantly simple compound grind: It’s a full flat grind with an edge bevel on only one side. That makes it sit somewhere between a full flat, chisel and a Scandi grind. Are there any modern knives that use this compound grind?

It depends what you are looking for in a pocket knife. If cutting performance is your top priority, then I would say no. You can get much better steel than S45vn for 1/3 - 1/2 the price (Spyderco’s Maxamet, s110v and k390). If tight tolerances are the priories (fit and finish, handle materials, symmetry), then yes it is. I love my small sebenza as a fidget, show piece. But cuts mediocrely compared to any Spyderco models. Just an average knife nuts input :)

Hey DCA. I bought a CRKT Folts S.P.E.W. (Not from KnifeCenter, sorry) To my dismay the tip has a noticeable deflection to the left if looking at the spine from above. Is there anyway to remedy this or should I just embrace this little knife being quirky out of the box. Thanks, Love the show.

Have had both the ZT 0562 (CF version) and the CRK Sebenza 31 for several years now. Reach for the ZT as a daily carry more often than the Sebenza. Prefer the feel of it in hand, quicker and easier to open one handed and imo the ZT is a better slicer hence a better EDC blade (for my uses). Just my two cents. Your mileage may vary. Both are excellent knives no doubt.

I just bought a Protech TR-3 S45 DLC a blade HQ exclusive and the blade came dull. I did not think much of it until i tried to sharpen it. The bur shows up very early and easily, however I cannot get that thing shaving sharp or able to cut paper worth a crap. I never have had this problem before. I am not sure if its the heat treatment or more of issue with S45 ? It’s my first time with 45. I have plenty of knifes with CV20, M390, S30V ect. Otherwise the knife pretty much perfect.
