I continue to study the knife industry as I have now for many years but I buy pretty much nothing any more. The expensive high end products have never been realistic to me for a tool that cuts stuff, a tool that I can lose easily and might get used for 20 seconds on any given day. On the other hand, it is second nature for me to have a knife on me at all times and I certainly enjoy them and so I keep watching DCA and others hoping just 1 more knife earns a place in my collection. I’m a hard sell these days.

I agree with every word you wrote here. The knife industry is following the bullshit pricing increases that have been happening in the last few years. Currently, Benchmade earns my angst ever since they introduced that shitty Narrows at $520.00. OUT of their friggin minds. The whole line is lost as a value purchase. Overrated and overpriced garbage. I'm no easy sell anymore as well.
@acid6urns
@acid6urns Ай бұрын
@@nolobedewhile some companies like benchmade are overpriced, everything is more expensive now. obviously a knife that was $100 5 years ago is gonna cost a good 30-50 dollars more now, that’s just how bad inflation has been for a while.
@nolobede
@nolobede Ай бұрын
@@acid6urns Of course inflation is accounted for. And lets not be so naive that inflation isn't also an unjustified excuse in many cases. There are USA knife company's making a better product at better prices than BM.

Don’t kid yourself. This isn’t about inflation as much as it’s about taking advantage of the knife simps who will beg to be allowed on a wait list so they can overpay for the “latest and greatest” creation from these makers who laugh at them while taking their money.

I used to be so much more into knives a few years ago, it felt like every week there was something unique, exciting and affordable. Now it feels like the people who were putting out great knives back then, now put out recycled, boring designs over and over again. I don't remember the last time Civivi has brought out anything that wasn't a past design changed a tiny bit. At the same time, there has been an absolute FLOOD of companies demanding $300-$500 or more for 154CM, D2, S30V, 1095 and I cannot tell you what a huge feeling of disgust and disappointment I have for today's knife market. We grew too much too fast and now almost nobody has had an original design that costs less than $350.
@Monsoonpain
@Monsoonpain Ай бұрын
@seancollins3711 - 100% well said. I saw that The James Brand has a VG10 folder for 160 bucks. VG10, a common , relatively average, performing steel that is in my Boker Urban Trapper...but that was only 60 buck (at the time). And yes, many designs look the same. I can name 10 folders that look similar to the Kizer Drop Bear, and another 10 that look similar to the Benchmade Bugout. Will they perform the same...maybe , maybe not....but too many designs look alike now

Need some knife advice. Need a folding knife, not an automatic. I need to cut a bunch of shrink wrap off of pallets at work and a normal drop point or clip point blade slips out of the cuts. Im looking for some sort of hawkbill or recurve blade knife to gather the material into the cut. Normally i preder tough steels, but this likely wont touch anything except for said shrink wrap. Less than $200 is mandatory, but less than $100 is preferable. Thoughts?

DCA I have been looking for an edc knife to fit my bill for quite some time. I’m not a collector of knives but have a wide variety of approx 50 knives. My default as been a Spyderco delica I bought 20 years ago and a new delica 4 and an Ontario rat1 aus8. I am not a fan of ball bearings and not a fan of benchmade even tho I have a griptilian sheepsfoot. I prefer 3-3.5” folding blades thumb or flipper deployment and no button locks cause I like strength priced up to $200. I’ve honestly watched every episode KC has put out and I may be in overload. Collecting used to be worth it before supply FAR outstripped demand. Brands used to have specific callings, craftsmen who long used tools used to make a couple blades that solved issues, it was collectable. Now brands have a stab at everything, and craftsmen are just designers that spend more time playing mad libs in brainstorming sessions with brands to come out with mismatched products that solve nothing and cause issues. Perhaps I am off the reserve and just need me some breakfast food?

I agree with you that it feels like a lot of modern tools aren't made with end use in mind. How does that lead to supply outstripping demand? Also if supply passes demand shouldn't prices drop?
