Counterfeit knives suck

I know some folks have differing opinions but i share the opinion of most long time knife collectors I've run across here in America. Counterfeit knives have no place in the hobby regardless of how good they are. In fact a well made counterfeit is even more problematic. I'm not talking about other knife companies making similar knives. I talking about knives that disreputable knife companies brand with the intellectual property of another company and knives individuals alter to pass off as name brands.

The Rat I is definitely a counterfeit. The pivot screws are off. The pocket clip is off. The gimping is off. A real Rat I is a very good user knife.

I agree with you, Tobias! Some years ago, a buddy and I found a great deal on Aimpoint red dot sights. He had some problems with his. Two or three years later, I read an article on spotting counterfeits, and sure enough that’s what we had. I doubt even the guy at the show selling them knew they were fake; he just found a good wholesale price. When buyers jump to pay $200 for something that normally goes for $300, a few thousand $25 fakes become very profitable. A certain country is VERY good at counterfeiting, and it really sucks!

I recently picked up an old barlow with an unusual second blade. A bottle opener and can opener, as id never seen that before. Any idea how uncommon it might be?

I haven't seen one before but it sounds cool. I have seen a couple two blade knives with a bottle/can opener secondary but never a Barlow. I know some of the past WWII British Army clasp knives had such a blade. I would think the a barlow with such a blade would be somewhat rare! Great find.

Great video. I agree with your points. Love my Ganzos. They have proven to be a good value brand using real D2 unlike some others in the price range. I have the Rat 2 D2. It is a wonderful knife. I have learned to buy from reputable dealers that have a proven track record.

Oh yeah I also picked up an original Kamp king like yours I cannot believe the condition of this Knife I made a video talk to you later. Let me know if you’re interested in swapping something

I think it’s common to get fakes on E Bay. I once got a fake RAT 1 from an E Bay vendor in the same way. Mine was quite good but I knew it was a fake because I had a genuine one to compare with. I wrote the truth in my feedback. The vendor tried to talk his way out of it. When I wouldn’ buy it he said he’d refund my money and let me keep the knife. I told him I’d keep the knife and he could keep the money AND the review.

Never seen that color and the lock up is terrible. My Rat 1 can be flicked open with the thumb stud and makes a satisfying clunk when it locks up, the same with the Rat 2, it is a feature of the knife and the reason I bought the Rat 2. I have never moved the clip on the Rat 1 but have on the Rat two and not had any stripped threads. The lock up on both knives is right in the middle every time. It does look like a Rat 1 except for the color and of course the action or lock up. Sorry that it has soured your experience.

I agree 100%. I have a few Ganzo's and I am happy with them in general...they're Ganzo's. I'm not naive but I got duped after the Holiday's. A travelling knife dealer set up in a local mall, I had to go look of course. I spotted a BM Proper in the case for $45.00. Conversation went like this: me "Is that a Benchmade Proper"? him "Yes, it is." me "That is a cheap price...can I see it?" him handing it to me "I have only 2 left, I got a deal from Benchmade". him "Let me get the box for it...that'll be $90.00...I'll let you have them for 80.00." me after fondling and looking it over "I'll take them both, my brother will like one too." A day or so later I saw Paddy's video on the BM Proper from Aliexpress...DUPED I tell ya. My bad (I mean he had the boxes LOL), but never again.

I got one of those fake Rat 1s about a year ago but was able to get a refund and returned it. When I saw it was fake I went and picked up a real one from Walmart and was able to compare the two side by side. The fake is close but not exact, it is just slightly larger in all dimensions, not much but just a slight bit. The quality was not quite as good overall on the fake compared to the real thing.

Like you, I have occasionally bought a Chinese clone of a popular knife just to see if I like it, and to see what all the hype is about at a fraction of the cost of the real article. I recently bought what I thought was going to be another clone of the Benchmade Bugout and was surprised to find it was an actual counterfeit. The knife itself is of good quality and could easily be passed off as the real thing. I'm sure that many knives like this are resold on sites like ebay at full price.

Tobias. Love your videos!! I'm not sure what the warranty policy is on that knife, but why don't you write a letter or call Ontario explaining the situation. They may say to send it in and then they can tell you if it's a real one or a fake. They may even send you a new one for the inconvenience. Just a thought. I could listen to you talk about knives for days! Keep up the great work.

I don’t really like flipper knives, but that’s the only kind of knife I don’t own. I seen on Paddy potato Channel that the Bench made bug out he couldn’t tell the difference between his original and the clone and you could pick it up for 20 bucks so I’m thinking about doing that. Then I said wait a minute for the same price I can get a Ganzo and it’s not a counterfeit or a clone anyway I’m rambling off have a good day buddy

That rat is definitely a fake. Right off the bat, the pivot on the original isn't tooled on the show side like that one is. They never made that color, and the screws on the real one are not overly strippable. That clip looks to be slightly the wrong shape too. In any case, while the real one is way better, I don't really think you'd like it very much. If that Ganzo is too big for your taste, the rat1 certainly would be too. I hate that a company can do this. I'm generally pretty loose about intellectual property to be honest, but this is a sad situation. I hate that an unconnected, dishonest company can ruin an experience for you like this.

I cannot disagree with you. I have to 'fess up to buying a cheap knife on AliExpress which is a straight counterfeit of a Benchmade Proper 319, even down to coming in a fake Benchmade box. First thing I did was polish the Benchmade logo off the blade and destroy the packaging. That said, I have to concede it appears to be a good knife. But another thought, if I may - why do we see counterfeit Benchmades and the like, but no counterfeit GECs? It seems to me that this can only be because the counterfeiters haven't (yet) been able to make them cheaply enough, or indeed make them at all. That makes GEC very desirable and superb value in my book. Counterfeits are both legally and morally indefensible - Deuteronomy 25:15 applies!
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 4 жыл бұрын
I hate to break the news to you but Case, Queen, and GEC knives are also routinely counterfeited, especially Case. GEC is not as routinely counterfeited as Case is because GECs tend to be noticeably more different than other traditional knives, especially those out of China. Case knives also have a longer tradition of being the "Knife Collector's Knife". (not to mention just about every trapper that is made in China is built n the Case frame!) The most common way to counterfeit or fake Case, Queen, and GEC knives is to "fake" older knives that are scarce and hard to find. Often the counterfeiter will artificially age and more modern knife and and modify the tang stamps. Some times it is matter of swapping blades or building a "Frankenstein" parts knife. I've seen so-called Case knives that have an old Case blade that was modified to fit into an inexpensive Imperial handles with the shield swapped out! That one was easy to spot. Others are more sophisticated. That's said, I think you correct that it easier to counterfeit modern folders and their is good money in it. The knives are easier to take apart down to the smallest screw and then copy. Traditional knives are hand made and the tangs are normally stamped and not PAD printed. Often every blade will be stamped. The stamping is normally done before the heat treating so it is also harder to fake. But counterfeiting still remains a problem. But the more likely problem is selling a parts knife as an original.

@@KnifeChatswithTobias Goodness Tobias I'd no idea! I suppose where there's a dishonest buck to be made there will always be enough scoundrels around to see an opportunity. I've only ever bought GEC and Case new from respectable dealers, hence this comes as news to me.

Great video ! I know this is in response to paddys video and all the immoral people that commented nonsense about how its ok to buy counterfeit if you can afford the real deal . Unfortunately it makes me feel different about paddy and I don't know if I can support his channel any longer . It would be one thing if he did the video to help us not get ripped off but unfortunately he went further and recommended that Benchmade counterfeit for people that can't afford the real one . I am in total agreement with you on this one .
