No doubt, for a pattern I really don't collect, I sure make quite a few shows about them. This is in response to William's Knife Life "I Hate Trappers" episode and RJ's Knives "I love Trappers" Was either show an actual Open Tag? Probably not. But I still had to get in on it. It's always fun to talk traditional knives; even if it is a pattern I'm not fond of. Hmm.... Maybe it's time for the leg knife rant!

Great video Tobias. I love the Trapper pattern! I really enjoy traditional knives that have 2 or 3 blades. I love that the trapper has 2 full size blades on the same end. It just feels like a true “Jack knife” (to me). My favourite is just a plain Jane Case trapper in bone or synthetic. You’ve got great collection! Thanks! 👍🤙

Thanks Tobias for another great video! Had me laughing at the beginning, that was awesome! When I saw Mark’s video it made me think. I had not started out to collect trappers but I looked around and I guess I do like the pattern because I had more than a few of them. If someone asked me what’s my favorite I would answer the copperhead. But I have more trappers. They are useful but not better than anything else. And I agree with you on marketing. I am honored that you watch my videos and I hope they entertain you. All the best, RJ.

I believe knife names point out who the knife was designed for; Farmers, Sodbuster, Ranchers, Stockman, Trappers for Trappers. However; the point is, the name is a general description. If you do a lot of processing of furs and hides you likely don’t use a folding knife. However; if you process just a few animals or fish for eating any folding knife works fine. A whittler used for occasional whittling works well too. If you clean a few trout for a shore lunch about any knife will get the job done. A straight cutting edge and fine point blade like a Wharncliffe can make small precise cuts and makes a good whittler too. It is useful preparing small game animals, game birds and trout for eating too. Up swept curved cutting blades make good skinners. A Cotton Sample makes a good skinner and a Wharncliffe makes precise cuts. Combine the two shapes makes a compromise that works but, not perfectly. That might be the idea of the folding Rough Rider Trapper with a Saddle Horn fashioned handle. Whittling with any curved blade is a sure way to need some bandaids. I like the description some collectors use describing a Spey blade as being an eraser blade. Trapper Spey blades shave wood and hair well but don’t work well for precise cuts. I have little interest in most Trappers; with the exception of ones that don’t have traditional Spey blades. Collecting Trappers furnishes plenty to pick from.

I had to take stock of the different types of Trapper Knives that I have found over the years. Surprisingly I found about 12-14 knives in each of 3 categories: 1. regular bladed 4.12" Trappers, 2. 3.5" mini-Trappers some with spey some with wharncliffes as second blade, and 3. other off-sized or one-bladed Trappers. Thanks for the inspiration Tobias. Also I think that Frost Cutlery (et al) made their fortunes on the back of many many commemorative Trappers maybe more than Case even.

I like the trapper pattern just fine, though I'm not big on commemorative knives. Rough Ryder makes a mini in VG10 that fits comfortably next to my wallet. But having just gotten my first canoe, my allegiance might be changing.

My favorite pattern is the Barlow, because that was my first knife my grandfather gave me. The trapper is down on the list of favorites. I like the Moose better than the Trapper even though they have the same blades. One trapper you didn't mention was the trapper nut, the peanut with trapper blades.

I am in agreement with you. I have 2 trappers. One was given to me by my dad. It isn’t going anywhere. The other is a Bear & Son that I purchased a few years ago. It has black plastic handles and no bolsters. No pretty at all. The lack of bolsters reduced the weight of the knife. That is an unintended benefit. I carry that trapper only during home grown tomato season. I have found that the Spey blade is excellent at slicing ripe out of the garden tomatoes which I will eat every day at lunch. The rest of the year it will be a stockman or a congress.

Love your videos! I spend a lot of time touring with my band out in cowboy country. I have to say that a bunch of those cowboys carry a trapper for edc! I never cared for the pattern myself until a recent purchase from a custom knife maker I'm friends with. He built a gorgeous stag single clip blade trapper pattern with damascus steel, & it is a freaking little razor. & I'm in love with a trapper pattern for the 1st time! Great channel & lots of great knowledge! Thanks brother...

Cool story! And no doubt the knife is useful, handy knife. My issues are more with the marketing of the knife. The Slimline or a single clip blade version would probably also be my choice is I went the Trapper route. That or a MiniTrapper.

I only have one Trapper, a cheap 3 3/4 inch, yellow handled Schrade Old Timer, that to me is a beater knife. But the construction is excellent, the shape fits nicely in hand. The clip point is slim and the point is very useful. The Spay blade is fine for a secondary blade, but yeah, a spearpoint would be more useful. But, it really fits well in the hand. It is a very comfortable grip. I only own one, but if I lost it I would absolutely replace it, even though I like lockbacks best and Scout/Camp knives next, followed by Canoe knifes. Great video topic. Thanks.

I used to not buy a knife unless it was a congress or a stockman. But sometime in the last 25 years I was bit by the collecting bug and started buying lots of different patterns. I kinda figured out the The Trapper was more for trapping buyers than skinning a mink or small game. lol but I do think they're a good looking knife and very useful.

I have a funny one for you ... I have a pricy little peanut with mastodon ivory scales that has a somewhat odd "spey" blade in place of the usual secondary pen blade. It's almost like a coping blade with a little bit of a belly and an upsweep on the edge. Case called it a "Trappernut".

I like that Buck fish Trapper. At first I didn't care much for the Trapper pattern. Then I found the classic carbon Wharncliffe Trapper. I love that knife. It was a marketing ploy that worked. Boy they really covered that Lunar landing blade with a bunch of billboarding. The Upswept Trapper, I'd call it a skinner. I guess if you make it, you can call it whatever you want. They like to confuse us with names.

Hey Tobias I love the trapper bc it's the first pocket knife I used to skin Muskrats Racoons Foxes with. And yes the clip point is perfect for making precise cuts most furbears has delicate skin . So yeah I enjoy the trapper, the muskrat is a great trappers knife as well but the spey blade is used to remove fat off the hide before fleshing and stretching the fur. But like alot of old times say theres more than 1 way to skin a cat.

I have two Case Trappers and neither of them is a commemorative. The blades and covers are completely free from billboarding/etching. I use them both. For fly fishing. The one in Burnt Salmon Jigged Bone for salmon, and the Olive Green JB for trout. I use one blade for processing the catch, and the other for eating my lunch (the brass divider keeps things hygienic). They do a grand job. And they look nice. I know nothing of real/fake 'Trapper History', and care little for it anyway, but then I use knives rather than collect them. Have I missed something?

My Case 4 1/8” trapper with blue jigged bone and red Case shield is one of my favourite user traditionals. It’s great for chopping apples. But I’d be surprised if I have more than 2 or 3 trappers, and I’m not sure I have another with a spay blade. I’ve one with a bottle opener and another with a Warncliffe. I’ve probably another one, perhaps 2, but I can’t remember.

I have many different patterns, love the canoe, don't have a single trapper, yet. I do however have a moose. So maybe you could state i do have a trapper knife. I don't hate trappers, i just love the other patterns more. Also i don't have a leg knife, i really hate those. I'm curious about whittlers, there are different bladeshapes on whittlers, maybe you would do a video about whittlers or maybe you allready did and i missed it? I have come across so many commemorative knives that were never used, I imagine because the previous owners did not want to damage the etching on the blade, or because they did not want the value to decrease. I have about 4 or 5 trappers, but they are not my "go to". One pattern I intend to pursue more is the moose pattern, that style is just more appealing to me. Thanks amigo, thanks for all of the great insight into this pattern :)

I have some and like the look, but i don't carry them as i find the clip blade (as in many other Classic US knives) to be too thin and tapered for my needs, i like the spear blade better. I do always Carry a sunfish for working around the farm and sometimes a Barlow in my free time. Also the two blades are too similar. For the same size and Number of blades i would carry a far more practical (for me) victorinox pathfinder.

@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 3 жыл бұрын
Marketing. Many Jack knives are lumped into the trapper family to help boost sales. Originally the Trapper was a name Case gave to its 54 Pattern Jack Knife. So originally the trapper was just a type of Jack knife sold by Case. Through the genius of sales advertising a mediocre easy to produce knife with modest sales became their best seller. Everyone else saw the success of the Case Trapper and jumped on the band wagon.
