Restoring an old cleaver and fitting a new handle made in my style.
I found this old beauty in a thrift store, it's 36cm (14inch) overall with 23cm (9inch) long blade 11cm (4.3inch) at his widest.
The steel is some kind of high carbon heat treated to an hardness between 50 and 55 on the Rockwell scale, appropriate for a cleaver.
The construction is very interesting with the tang forge welded and riveted to the blade.
I guess the extra part on the handle is some kind of guard and the protrusion on the spine is possibly there as a stop when pushing on the spine with the other hand. Not sure! Say something in the comments if you know better.
Guard is made of brass, pinned in place with two 3mm brass round pins. The thin dark wood strip is wenge and the rest is beech with a white vulcanized fiber liner.
Both wood are stabilized, process described in this video:

Personally, I would've worked a bit more on the blade itself/ the part where the blade is being held such as grind it a bit to be flatter to show less of the "detail" and also would polish the hook more. But that's just me I guess.

Only thing I would change is the hook on the handle, that would be gone. I have a question though, what is the chemical you soak the blade in to remove the rust?

The handle looks like it doesn't belong to the cleaver. My opinions is purely about aesthetics, I would have gone with a darker wood and metal, also I really like whatever was wrapped around the bill hook, gave it a neat look. The handle looks nice, but it looks like it should be on a refined blade, the billhook and the spike make the cleaver looks really rugged as if it would be found in the hands of a pirate, the handle looks like it belongs to a nobleman.

I agree 100% on this. Make no mistake I love it. It looks amazing regardless. It's so nice to see an old knife be given a new lease on life. Not to mention the restoration itself was a joy to watch. I agree with your esthetic choices. Sure, you could have polished the blade like a mirror. And destroyed all that interesting patina and character by doing so. And sure, you could have scooped out exactly the same type of scale on one half, same as the old handle. But by giving it such a modern, polished and shorter handle, it's like you are highlighting the old character of the blade with the contrast, like putting an old museum piece in a modern crystal case, preserving and accentuating it. Well done.

One thing you could try are graphite sacrificial anodes for electrolysis, I have a medium tank here with graphite rods glued up all around with hot glue and connected together and they are absolutely amazing, they leave no mess, you dont need to clean your item as much after electrolysis and they last and last and don't get covered in reddish crap :)

I like that you made a new and beautiful handle but left the patina of the ole metal blade and the original rivets of the blade to the handle. The walnut (?) and brass are a very nice touch. You've given a nice old tool another life. If we and the world are lucky, in another 100 years the cleaver will still be here somewhere and another great craftsman may put another handle on it. I have a feeling that the new and current handle will last a very long time and will be loved for it's beauty and fine craftsmanship. Great job! You did good.

I found the tail odd also,I think this was a repair job handle, I would have expected a rat tail tang and round handle. Someones clever got broke and a blacksmith "fixed up" a handle for it from something else. . . . or I'm all wrong LOL

@jasonmalackly2986

So you carry a large piece of meat and smaller function is a hand protector. That was a old school meat cleaver like the ones that hook the whole animal apart.
@saoirse5308
@saoirse5308 5 жыл бұрын
@@jasonmalackly2986 please think that out, you hook meat to hang it or hold it. You can't hang the meat from the clever, if you hooked anything bigger than a small roast it would jam into your hand. It's not a viable useful meat hook.

If seen closely there were patterns and markings showing true age and soul of that blade. If polished and removed, might as well buy a new one over the counter. Check out ur local museum, they kept things the way they are if things are salvageable
