Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard were one of my favourite TV shows from the 80's. The Dukes of Hazzard's first broadcast was in January 1979 and last was in February 1985. Knight Rider's first broadcast was in September 1982 and last in April 1986. When Knight Rider was first broadcast in September 1982, The Dukes of Hazzard were airing their 5th season without Bo and Luke Duke for 19 episodes. I still enjoy both shows and cars. Both vehicles used to get wrecked during the stunts, especially the landings of the jumps, depending how they landed, sometimes demolished the cars pretty bad. None of them were indestructible. The Charger did more spectacular jumps and was more abused than the Trans Am. They did wrecked less Trans Am's during the jumps because they sometimes used some special stunt cars with a rubber kind of body and some 1/8th scale '82 Camaro Z/28's from the 2nd season on, modified to look like the KITT car. The Dukes of Hazzard had the same treatment, I think during their 7th and last season, for some crazy dangerous jumps. The Charger on this video that exploded was later replaced by a Dodge Monaco that was totally burned for the scene. These Monaco's also had a hard time during the filming of TV shows in the 1980's.

You have to remember that Knight Rider in its first season was on Friday nights, the same night as The Dukes Of Hazzard. With this being the season of Coy and Vance on the Dukes and the ratings dropping, Glen Larson and his staff decided to have some "friendly fun" at their network rivals and make people forget the General Lee. To avoid copyrights, they didn't say the car's name, but the orange Charger and the moonshine were mentioned, even though the Dukes couldn't sell it.

Like you couldn't recognise that the car burning isn't a Charger :-)

These are great to watch, but they get a bit embarrassing too. Bonnie gets caught fiddling with KITT...again.. but finishes in time when Michael opens the door. Then there is "KITT's Schematic Visuals" lol omg, but the best bit is the turbo boost upto 160 MPH which looks to be not going much faster than the red car. Glad I was easily fooled as a kid :)

sometimes they roll in spare parts. There are 4 rocket motors under the car. One facing horizontally so that KITT will go faster, and 2 more in the front facing vertically to make it jump.

On both shows in the later episodes you could see they're trying to save money on jumps using basically toy cars.

After she says "OMG" look at the car that's on fire. If you look closely, they switched out the 70 Charger for 73 Dodge Monaco 4 door and expected you not to notice.

@TheDustyspears I'm guessing they didn't want to completely destroy the Charger, looked like it just had some fire damage, not totally on fire for however long it took to shoot the scene.

I dont see the insult myself. Not Every orange Charger is the General Lee. I am interested in knowing how a 1969 Charger turns into a '74 Monaco after it explodes. In the last Knight Rider series, KITT was a Mustang that could transform into a F150 pick up and other vehicle profiles. Perhaps the orange Charger in this Knight Rider clip has a technological advancement that is even beyond KITT!
