HEEL TURN:
Slip the first stitch purlwise, and knit to halfway across the heel flap needle(s). Then knit 2 more stitches.
SSK (slip knitwise, slip knitwise, knit those two sts together through the back loop), K1
Turn your work
Slip 1, P5, P2tog (purl 2 together), P1
Turn your work
** Slip 1, knit to one stitch before the gap
SSK, K1
Turn your work
Slip 1, Purl to one stitch before the gap
P2tog, P1
Turn your work.
Repeat from ** until you've worked all the stitches on the heel flap needle(s)
Nice work! Have more chocolate and maybe even a celebratory adult beverage. You're ready to start the Gusset!

I'm making my first pair of socks following another pattern, but was having trouble visualizing the heel turn. Your explanation was super clear and really helped me to see what I needed to be looking for :) Thank you!

I would like to second that. I had a written pattern before I tried this website, and I couldn't understand what they meant about the "clusters of stitches" but this video made it much clearer and easier to understand.

I've knitted a few pairs of socks but always had a hard time identifying where the gap was. When you said that it was where you turned the work I instantly understood. Just to be sure when I turned my work I added a clip-on marker. Seemed like extra work but I had the heel done in no time at all. It was perfect. That made my day. It was so basic. I'm making a toddler sock but your instructions helped so much.

Light bulb moment! You always say, read your knitting, and I finally discovered that if I look at the purl side I could clearly see if an SSK or K2tog had been worked on the round before! Believe me, I am elated! Hope to eventually be able to “see” lots more! Thanks for your videos. I am understanding socks better with every try.

Jana, After the 20th viewing I stopped counting! It works, I did it, wow! Incorporating the reinforcement was an excellent idea, it's so nice to feel a bit of cushion. The anchor for me was having the same amount of stitches on each side after the gap. My first sock has taken me 20 years, most of that time has been overcoming my fear. Thanks for being my guide in the journey.

@PurlTogether
@PurlTogether 3 жыл бұрын
I don't have a video specifically on that, but sure, you could definitely alternate colors. You wouldn't even need to slip any of the stitches because you're already carrying a float behind your work by alternating colors. The float is what creates the extra padding and reinforcement. Happy Knitting!

This was super helpful! Quick question, though. I'm knitting a sock magic loop with 18 stitches on each side. Will this method still work if I follow the same guidelines? Slip 1pw, knit half + 2, ssk, k1, turn; and then slip 1pw, and purl 5? Or should I adjust the number I'm working on each needle to account for the fact that I have fewer stitches? Thank you!

I'm a little confused what to do when there's only one stitch left on either side of the gap. I know you talked about it but since that is normally the stitch you would use for the ssk or p2tog, do you do that and forgo the normal row ending knit or purl? Or do you back up the ssk or p2tog by one stitch (stopping two sts before the gap) so you can still get in the ending knit or purl on the last stitch ? For this question I'm also assuming normal stockinette for the heel turn cause I'm not sure I'm ready to tackle it in eye of partridge.
@PurlTogether
@PurlTogether 2 жыл бұрын
If you only have one stitch after the gap, just ssk or p2tog to close the gap and omit the last stitch.

For a very narrow heel, can I sl 1 P3 P2 tog P1 and then turn? Asked another way. if I only purl 3 instead of your 5 stitches, how does that affect the rest of the sock? In your example, you knit half (18) PLUS 2. If I shorten Sl 1 P5 P2tog to Sl P3 P2tog, does anything else change?

A long time ago, in I believe English knitter guilds, women were considered not smart enough to turn the heel and had to give up the job to the knitting master until the heel and gusset are finished and I believe also to close off. It's weird the things people made up to make others feel inferior...

Turning the heel. 64 sts ,m, so 32 for the heel. After I turned the heel, did all the decreases, I was left with 18. The last decrease on both sides was ssk/p2tog, whereas you had a single st left after your last decrease (I think). So maybe I am doing something wrong. BTW, I love having an “action” round and a plain round! Makes it so easy to keep track.

that's totally ok. As you've noticed, depending upon your stitch count, you may or may not have a stitch left over to knit or purl at the end. Just close the gap with your decrease, turn your work and carry on!

This was great until somewhere around the 4th row when you get fast and sloppy. Your fingers obscure your work and aren't coordinated with what you are rushing to say, and then you've got that yarn over which confused me, and I hesitated, and by that time I had lost my place inthe instructions and now I have NO idea where to pick up. I will try to refer to the directions that you've posted and if that doesn't work I might have to watch the video all over again to see where I got left in the dust. I'm sure if I was an expert knitter, I would be so thrown off at this point, but I wonder if you only want experts watching your videos? I'm not going to give up, though. I hope I can catch up. I've been watching all sorts of videos,and your descriptions are generally much better than anyone elses that I've seen. I loveKZfaq but this situation is the ONLY time I really wish I had a live person here to help me. I'll soldier on, though and hope to catch up.
