Hand dyed yarn is beautiful, and can sometimes have variation between skeins even when dyed at the same time (part of the same dye lot). For some, the solution to a cohesive piece is alternating skeins to blend the colors together and keep your project from having a blocky look where it is noticeable where a new skeins is introduced.
This video specifically addresses doing that when knitting in the round on an item such as a sweater, where you have the ability to change yarns every row. I picked up this trick of twisting the yarns on the front from a social media clip, and wanted to share it with you, it is my go-to when alternating skeins, enjoy!
The sweater I showed off in this video is my version of the Avena by Jennifer Steingass:

Thank you. For taking time on your days off making videos. I am learning a lot from your videos. You might also like the video by Knitting with Suzanne Bryan called Blending Hand Dyed. She does not cross her yarns. If this would be used differently than what you have demonstrated please let me know. I am a beginner knitter and trying to wrap my head around what to use when.

Easy peasy, thanks! I have been using helix where you stop three stitches before next yarn and slip all three, then start knitting with next yarn. This way each round your new yarn start moves backwards….thus helix. It is great for larger sections but knitting socks it becomes a bit too much so I love this new technique that you showed!

Hi schnappsie- the Avena? It’s not really mine to do so with step by step videos, I was able to do that with the Ranunculus because it has many distinct parts I could help a bit with, then let people use the pattern. The Avena has a great chart for the colorwork, and many other pieces are similar to many other top-down sweaters, the videos I have for separating sleeves etc may already cover much of what is needed for this sweater ❤️

How do you do the first change with the new ball? Where you first connect. Oh boy. Did I say that right? Lol .thanks 😆

I leave a tail hanging in back, then bring the new yarn forward and twist as I do in the video here. The first one will be loose as there is no tension yet, but you can fix that later. Hope this helps :)

I've come back to knitting after a decades long break, and there are a lot of new techniques and yarns! A friend wanted a hat with stripes, so I learned about helical knitting. When people talked about alternating skeins when using hand dyed yarn, I imagined that they were doing helical knitting with two almost identical colors. Is this technique preferable? If so, could you please explain why or what I'm missing? Thanks!

It’s really a matter of personal preference- helical knitting often involves changing the beginning of round or keeping track of both, where this is always at the beginning of round, but can sometimes leave a bit of a tension seam. Which one is less bothersome or easier to track may be the reason one is preferable to the other

@@SunDragonTipsTricks Thanks! I'd forgotten that some folks change the beginning of the round with helical knitting. I've only done the other kind. I'll do some experimentation before I commit in a garment!

I wonder.. 🤔 is it possible to use this technique when knitting a thicker stripe and don’t want to break the yarn? Like, knitting 10 rounds each in either colour. Yarn is lace, fingering.

Since you are not changing yarns and starting to knit with a separate yarn each row, I think either it would be visible in the front or sink to the back, and be similar to just twisting the yarns around each other in the back- I have done that, twisting the yarns in the back to carry them- I usually do it every 2 rows or so, not every row, it can keep it less visible on the front.

Help! I need to alternate skeins but my pattern is all cables or I can do it in a purl section. If doing this with purls, would I drop the yarns in the back?
@SunDragonTipsTricks
@SunDragonTipsTricks Жыл бұрын
I think in a purl section bringing your yarns to the back should work, you can always test it on a swatch if you have the time/energy ❤️

So I have it in my head to alternate skeins every 2 rounds. Does this method work duping it every 2 rounds instead of every round? I'm currently doing it every 2 rounds in a ribbed cowl and it's a bit messy. I don't know if it's just me being loosey gossie and it will get better as I go. Or if I'm doomed from the start because it just won't work doing it every 2. Do you have Abby insight regarding this?

Also - does this only work with stockinette stitch? Or can I do this with a textured stitch pattern?

Apologies I haven’t replied sooner, so much happening at my shop, we moved locations! If you are knitting in the round, I would change every round, every time you get back to the beginning of round. Every two rows is your option if you are working flat, knit over and back, then switch. You can always wait two rows in the round as well, just make sure your tension of your float is not too loose or too tight going behind the work to be less noticeable. This may get better with practice, and the float will be a bit more noticeable on the back regardless. As to a texture, it should work 🤔🤔🤔
