Thank you to ‪@justvintagecrochet‬ for this wonderful idea! I had a great time figuring out what this Antique Mystery Knitting pattern was as I was knitting it up! What are your guesses?

Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

If Retro Claude is still doing her stash busting serie, you should send her this pattern since it is eating so much yarn. It's beautiful!😊

Oh my goodness! I'm so glad you've told people about Just Vintage Crochet! Corrine is such a trooper for trying to figure those patterns out, and her videos are so fun. That blue really makes your eyes pop! That is such a cute pattern. I imagine the full garment would be very warm.

Now I'm curious to see what it would have looked like if you did leave the yarn loops as one long loop per stitch... If made with silk yarn I think it could have looked quite glamorous and fringey! :D It's going to be a really beautiful cape though!

Actually, the 2 pieces plus the collar as is would make a very cool accent to a fabric capelet.

Your videos are always interesting and your vintage knitting always takes me back on my 70 year knitting journey. This particular knit was revealed to me from the first decrease. It was one of those patterns that one person would find in a book and teach to every other knitter in their circle, well into the third quarter of the last century, when modern pattern books became available even in the remotest places. So here I am, using a pair of my vintage needle and yarn from my enormous stash, knitting this cape for next winter’s Netflix and Chilly nights., in a stitch pattern that my aunt taught me in the 1950s. A few observations: you have proved that so-called continental knitting, which is not used in most of the European continent, can be totally useless in certain situations. You can be forgiven for using it because of your German origins 😊. However, you have proved here that you are a true knitter and can do whatever is necessary to get the results you need. Kudos. There are different methods of doing the loop stitch that secures the loops as you knit each stitch, but you managed quite well with the standard way. Two observations about those old pattern terms: knitting plain means working all knit stitches. Purl is always instructed explicitly. Knit even means knit in pattern without increasing or decreasing. Keep up the good work.

The look of this cape is fabulous and I can’t help thinking I’ve seen a vintage photo somewhere of someone wearing something like it but I would never knit one for myself because I’d be constantly worried about snagging the loops. Great job, though! I can’t wait to see the finished product!😊

For the mystery knits, you could have viewers send you patterns that they have 'redacted' and the key. That way you will not know what the pattern could be. That sounds like it would be fun to do. I want to go find you a pattern now. You could also set parameters on amount of yarn it requires.

I've seen a lot of people saying Knit Plain means to knit without increasing or decreasing in stockinette stitch or if working in the round, just knitting every stitch around for however long the pattern says in rows or to build up fabric of a certain length. Although in this case it seems to mean to knit every row. It's hard to know without the context lmao but so incredibly interesting & fun to watch! 🤩🥰
