The One Row Scarf by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee is a simple scarf that I recommend as an easy pattern that always knits up into a great looking scarf. In this video I walk through the stitches and tips on knitting this scarf.
You can find the free One Row Scarf pattern on the Yarn Harlot's website here:
www.yarnharlot.ca/blog/archive...
You can visit the Yarn Harlot's blog here:
www.yarnharlot.ca/
There are over 10,000 pattern pages for this scarf! You can see other knitters' finished scarves and get ideas for your own by browsing those:
www.ravelry.com/patterns/libra...
The cast-on for this pattern is "a multiple of 4, plus 2". If you need help understanding this, this video will help:
• Math for Knitters - Ca...
Here is my video on adding fringe:
• Knitting Help - Adding...
Detailed info on the gray scarf I knit can be found here:
www.ravelry.com/projects/veryp...
The yarns I used in my examples are both Knit Picks Preciosa Tonal.
You can use any needles for this pattern (straight or circular), I'm using double-pointed needles only because they are short and fit well on camera.
My nail polish is by Julep, color "Evan": refer.julep.com/s/stacip

I used this pattern with fringe to make my mother a scarf last Christmas. She is proud and tells everyone her daughter made it! Now she wants others more colors to match her other coats. I recommend this stitch for beginners! Making another soon.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for your tutorial! Around a week ago my parents found my Grandmother’s bag of wool and knitting needles and asked if I wanted them. She taught me when I was little (she died 19 years ago) and I wondered if I still remembered. Well, I did! I decided to make scarfs for Xmas pressies, but realised a basic knit would look a bit dull. I didn’t even realise there were different size needles for different yarns! 😂 Watching your tutorial (looking up how to knit into the back and how to purl along the way!) has just expanded my knitting ability and confidence and I’m half way through a scarf for my sister in law now! Ive also ordered different yarns for Mum and Mother in law. Your teaching style is amazing. 💕

I've made a few of these when I finally felt able to try a set of stitches. I LOVED it. It makes a design, yet as a new knitter, I wasn't too intimated by the set of stitches. Half way through a scarf I had the mantra of "Knit, Knit, Back, Purl, (repeat)"

Thank you for making this video. I used to knit when I was young but haven't done so in decades and really want to get back into it. This helped me feel like I still might be able to do it. Would love to knit grandkids scarves and this is perfect. After that I would love to try this for blankets for all of them. Thanks again!

I had a couple of balls of gorgeous yarn. I picked a pattern that wasn't meant for my yarn at all. I'm fairly new to knitting, though advanced with crochet. I was so frustrated. Then I found this video and it was EXACTLY perfect for my yarn. Now I'm moving along, got my confidence back and am creating the most beautiful scarf. Thank you! You're a wonderful teacher and I love, love, love this pattern!

I'm a beginner at knitting and have been searching for a way to make my very first project and wanted to knit my niece a scarf but just couldn't decide what design to use that would be easy for me to use. Now I don't have to go buy different size needles or yarn but use whatever I want. My niece has bought me several different colors of yarns as a gift to me so using what you just showed us I will begin making her scarf for her.Thank you so much for sharing this

Thanks, Staci! I recently made this scarf, but I decided to add a stitch (or maybe it was 2? ) so I could slip the first stitch of each row for a chained edge. Otherwise I followed the 4 stitch repeat as written. My scarf pattern came out **totally** different looking but it was really pretty anyway. This video reminded me that I want to make another One Row Scarf, this time just as written. The edges don't really need modification in this pattern anyway. They look straight and neat as is! Gotta love a simple, easy pattern that looks so impressive AND is reversible :)

I have only taken one knitting class, where I learned the very basics (cast on, cast out and K's). Then on youtube I learned a couple more things and that was enough to understand this pattern. I am 2/3 done with the scarf I've been knitting with this great, lovely, easy pattern. I stopped for a while because, 90+ °F temps. But it is looking fine... maybe I still need to work on the process of adding a second (or third) ball of yarn, but overall, it is coming out pretty cute.

Thank you for this. It’s what I need right now. I did just “have my heart broken” by a project. I’m a beginning Knitter (coming from Crochet) and, after knitting a few dishcloths, thought I was ready to make a Sophie Scarf. Worked so carefully for three days, then made a mistake I didn’t know how to correct and pulled the whole thing out. I will try again, but I need a “palette cleanser” in between times. Knitting seems to be such a challenge for me. (Yet, I can crochet very complicated patterns… because I can correct my mistakes!) 🌻🐌🧶💖

If you're a combo knitter that holds the yarn in your left hand this patter is unbelievably easy due to the the fact that we normally knit into the the back loop (as as the back loop is the leading leg for combo knitters when the opposite row has that stitch as a purl).

You can - the stitch combo will work, but you're not going to get the same look of the column of K stitches "popping" off the fabric. I suggest following the pattern as written - knit two through the front loops, knit one through the back loop, purl one.

Hi Deborah. I was taught the same way. The typical “front leg” of each k stitch just sits to the back of my lf needle. I tried it your way. Take K stitch twists but does not “pop”. Naturally our expert here is correct!
