Pattern for the scarf is by Stephanie Pearl-Mcphee and can be found online at:
www.yarnharlot.ca/blog/archive...
For the scarf shown in the video, I used US size 10 needles and worsted weight 100% acrylic yarn (Medium 4; used ~6 oz). I cast on 30 stitches; finished scarf is 5 ft long. Links to my long-tail cast on video ( • How to do long tail ca... ) and binding off stitches video ( • How to cast off stitch... ).

You are so dear to me, when it comes to your easy video of this scarf! There's something about making your own scarf, and that you could wear it too! That verigated Yarn you used---made your scarf looked beautiful! I'll bet you have a lot of scarves that you made...I love watching your videos, and your really cute accent! You've inspired me to try this out-this is so easy! Thank you so much for your heartwarming video!.

Hello this is Marie in Brittany ! I am French and I live in France, first of all I want to apologize for my bad English ! I knit this scarf in another (easier) way but it gives the same result ! Put on a number of stitches NOT even (important) ; Then knit 2, pearl 2, till the end of the row, but knit the last stitch on the needle (NOT PEARL !!!) Repeat always this row. And you will see the result. SAME as your scarf. Many kind greetings from France !

So happy to hear from you. It’s very fulfilling indeed but some friends don’t understand why I cannot just buy the scarves and donate. Lately I have learned how to knit hats, beanies and cowls in the round. Will be giving them to the orphanage in Mongolia next month, the homeless in Chicago in December and a local charity event organized to raise funds for drug addicts in July. Today I’m going to try knitting your 1-row repeat scarf for a cowl. I’ve cast on 46 stitches for the height and will continue knitting until I get to the circumference required. Then cast off and join the 2 ends together. Hopefully it works. 🙏

Hi! I tried this pattern with a variegated yarn and another with just a single color for swatches. They both turned out beautifully! Great video with clear instruction for the pattern thank you but could you be more specific regarding what type of wool to use and how much for an average scarf please - i am a new to knitting and dont know how to work out what i need to buy for this scarf - thank you in advance .
@KnittycatsKnits
@KnittycatsKnits 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Luke! For an average scarf that is about 7-8 in width and about 60 inches (5 ft) in length, you would need about 6-8 oz (180-240 g) of standard yarn (worsted weight - medium yarn, Red Heart Supersaver or Caron brand yarns). If you use a lighter weight (skinnier) yarn, then may need a bit more. The needles size to use is typically mentioned on yarn label but if not, US size 7-9 would work well for worsted weight (medium) yarns. Hope this helps but let me know if you have more questions. Hope you enjoy knitting this scarf. It is super easy and will look great. Thanks for watching and best wishes😊

Nice simple video thank you I do have one question you only showed one row sew are all the rows exactly the same and if you end on a knit do you begin with knit also?
@KnittycatsKnits
@KnittycatsKnits 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Angie, yes every row is knit exactly the same way. Just remember that the total stitches cast must be a multiple of 4 stitches plus 2 (eg, 38, which would be 9 x 4 = 36 plus 2). As long as you have that stitch count, then each row knit up in the same way as shown in video will produce that beautiful pattern. Hope you give it a try. Thanks for watching and best wishes😃

Thank you so much for this easy pattern. I chose this as my first knitting pattern to make a scarf. I am not sure how to cast off to finish the scarf. Since the pattern uses knit, purl... should I use all one type of stitch or what do you suggest? Also, I don't know what to do with the long tail from the beginning cast on. Thank you again for this very easy to follow video!
@KnittycatsKnits

So glad you tried this pattern! For the cast off, I would recommend just a regular cast off (don't have to bind off in pattern). If you need a refresher on cast off, check out my video at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ndB3haR_m8rZpJ8.html. Also, for the cast on (and cast off) tails, you can trim them to about 6 in long and then weave them in; see my video on that at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o85gfa57udqnZps.html Hope this helps. Hi Tom, great catch! Actually it is just one wrap, just a regular knit, on that last stitch. @KnittycatsKnits

Thanks, Nirupama! Regarding yarn, it would depend on the type of yarn, needle size , and the desired length of the scarf. In general, if using medium weight (worsted weight) yarn and making a scarf about 6-7 in wide and 4-5 ft long, you would need about 8-10 oz (240-300 g) of yarn for this pattern. Hope that helps. Hi Patricia, good question. For the scarf shown in video, I used about 6 oz (180 g) of yarn with US size 10 needles if I recall, it was all in just one skein of a Red Heart or ion Brand yarn. That should give you a scarf about 5 ft long (and about 6-7 inches wide). Hope that helps. Thanks for watching my videos. Do spread the word and best wishes with the project😊

What yarn would you recommend I wanted something soft and bouncy type of scarf rather then tight and flat knitted scarf?
@KnittycatsKnits
@KnittycatsKnits 4 жыл бұрын
Good question. I would recommend a wool-acrylic blend or even a cotton acrylic blend. A full acrylic yarn may also work, such as the Caron Simply Soft, which is a softer than most 100% acrylic yarns. Also knitting with a size larger than typically used for the yarn you use will make a looser and hopefully bouncer fabric. If you want something super plush, then the Bednar Velvet yarn will work well (keep tension loose if you use this yarn). Hope this helps. Best wishes and happy holidays!😀

I am curious to see how the beginning and end look like compared. I find that when I do the regular cast on and cast off, the beginning and end do not match, that's why I do the invisible cast on and work backwards for my beginning row and work it like a cast off. But the invisible stitch is such a hassle; on the other hand, I am a bit of a perfectionist and I want the beginning and end to match, so I make the sacrifice.

Hi there, love your explanation. Could I do a border of say 3 knit stitch on the sides and 3 rows on the bottom . I do not want it to curl!
@KnittycatsKnits
@KnittycatsKnits 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Cindy! Sure, you can add a 3-st knit border on either side (and 3 rows on the bottom). Just be sure that the stitches in the middle of the border stitches are a multiple of 4 st + 2. So, if knitting a scarf and you wish to cast on 26 sts (x of 4 + 2), then can add on another 6 sts (for a 3 st border on either side) and cast on 29 sts. Just as an example. In my experience, when I knit the scarf (or even recently when I used this one-row stitch to make an intarsia swatch with different colors), it didn't curl on the sides or at the bottom, so you can try to knit it without the border, if you wish. Either way, I think it will look very pretty. For the stripped (intarsia version) of this stitch, check out my video at: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/baeWisiq3dbIfWQ.html. Best wishes!

@vivianpowell1732

For this pattern you are supposed to cast on a number that's divisible by 4, then add 2. So casting on 20 would not work. You'd have to cast on 22 stitches, 20 +2 =22. Since 20 is divisible by 4, then you add 2 more stitches to give you a total of 22.

This looks like the same stitch from a knitting book, it's called "Mistake Rib" and done in 1 row and very simple. It's a multiple of 4 plus 3, and you :K2, P 2, and repeat to the last 3 stitches, then you end with :K2, P1. The first few rows look strange, but by the 5th you can see the pattern, very nice for scarfs or hats or warm cardigans

The mistake rib is done with slip stitches, so you aren’t knitting through back loops. I’ve made a couple of items with the Mistake Rib and it looks at a glance like this, but it is less complicated for someone like myself who isnt always the best at counting hundreds of stitches.
@vivianpowell1732
@vivianpowell1732 2 жыл бұрын
I have knit the Mistake Rib pattern before and it is stretchy like most ribbing patterns. One of the desirable effects of the One Row pattern is that it stays flat and is stable. I would stick with the original One Row pattern.

@KnittycatsKnits

Hi Laurie, good question. For 100% wool yarns (or high percentage wool blends), I like to Knit Picks Wool of the Andes yarn or Paton's (for socks). For more economical yarn (mostly 100% acrylic), I like the Lion Brand yarns (like Mandala) and also the Loops and Threads yarn. For cotton yarns for household projects (like dishcloths), I use Sugar n Lily or Peaches & Cream yarn.

How would I do this is on a circular needle, would it be possible?
@KnittycatsKnits
@KnittycatsKnits 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Sharon, good question and sorry for my delayed response. To knit this on a circular needle, it ends up becoming a 2-row pattern with slight differences in the stitches, but still pretty easy. Cast on a multiple of 4 sts, then joining in the round, for row 1 do *K1, P1, K2, rep from * to end of row. For row 2, do *K1, P3, rep from * to end of row. Repeating rows 1 & 2 should give you a similar look as the one row scarf. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching my video and happy knitting😊

hello! what brand and color yarn did you use for the gray scarf?
@KnittycatsKnits

Hi Daisy, I used worsted weight 100% acrylic yarn (Medium 4; used ~6 oz). Can't recall exact brand but think it may have been the Red Heart yarn (variegated; was a mix of gray and black). I think the pattern may be more eye-catching with a solid color yarn but thinking I probably just used what I had on hand. Still, was quite happy with the way it turned it out. I have 10ply wool and want to make a muffler for adult with 9 mm needle. How many stitches should I cast?
@KnittycatsKnits
@KnittycatsKnits 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Vandana, your wool and needle size are big and so thinking you will need fewer stitches (maybe 18 or 22) than shown in video. The best way to determine the number of stitches though is by making a small swatch with the pattern (as mentioned in video starting at 1.10 min). Suggest casting on only 10 stitches with your wool and the 10 mm needles and do the pattern for about 10 rows. Then measure the width of the piece. If it measures, say 2 inches, then you know you will need to cast on 30 st (3× 10 st) to get a width of 6 in. As long as the final number of stitches you cast is a multiple of 4 plus 2 sts, the pattern will work. For an adult muffler, a 6-8 in width would be good. Hope this helps and let me know how it turns out. Thanks for watching my video and best wishes😊

@KnittycatsKnits
@KnittycatsKnits 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Shiney! For a scarf, the typical width is about 6.5-7 inches. Knowing how many stitches will depend on the type of yarn and size of needles you are using. The best way is to cast on a few stitches (multiple of 4 sts plus 2, so maybe 14 sts) and knit a small sample in the pattern. Then measure width. Depending on that can determine stitches to cast For scarf For example, if your sample measures 3 inches wide, then you can cast on about 30 sts (14 x 2 =28 plus 2 sts). Just be sure that your stitches are a multiple of 4 sts and then add a sts. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and best wishes😊

Thanks, Swagata! For knitting this particular scarf for the dimensions you mentioned, if you use a similar yarn like I used (medium or worsted weight yarn), then I expect about 8 oz (240 g) should be enough (may wish to get 10 oz or 300 g to be on the safer side). Hi Judith, actually, I don't have a 2-color video for this one-row pattern. Were you instead asking about a different pattern video? For this 1-row pattern, I think you can change colors and you would still just keep doing the same 1-pattern (I would at least keep the same color for at least 2 rows though, so the pattern can form for that row; can use multiple colors and form a stripey pattern). This give me an idea and I might actually try this out with leftover yarns (:

Hello, i made a scarf for a friend using this pattern and maybe will always using this pattern to make many other scarfs and since i didn't really into all garter stitch as it's the basic one hehe. My question is do you get many holes using this pattern? It's not a yarn over (?) Or u left one yarn not stitch. It just i feel like it doesn't really tight (?) Like when you look at the scarf, it has many holes. Is it really like that for the results? Or my way of knitting is wrong (?) Or too loose or tight? But i always tight it when knitting. I'm just curious because my results is like that 😩 i also use a needle size 4 and it's double pointed needle and cotton yarn. So, if you have any answer for this question, please answer. Thank you❤️ Also thank you for the tutorial ❤️
@KnittycatsKnits
@KnittycatsKnits 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for trying this pattern and reaching out about the question. Actually, there should not be any holes in this pattern, since there are no yarn overs or k2tog, etc. It may be just loose knitting (or not having enough tension) or could be that you accidentally do some yarn over, which may cause the holes to form. Or if your yarn is too thin and needle size is big, then can cause knitting to appear loose and with holes. But if you are using US size 4, then that is a thin needle and, depending on cotton yarn thickness, would not think that yarn/needle is the issue (not sure of your cotton yarn thickness but if it is very thin, like crochet thread, then using a US size 4 needle may cause holes to appear and you would need very thin needles, like US size 0 or 1). Your scarf may still look good though, even with holes 😊. But if you really don't like the look, then would suggest trying again and checking yarn and needle size (to be sure they match well) and then making sure you follow pattern as shown in video). Hope this helps but let me know if you questions. Thanks so much for watching and best wishes😊

@@KnittycatsKnits thank you so much for your reply ❤️ The cotton yarn is for size 4 needles but the thickness is 4 ply (?) If I'm not wrong and it's not a bulky one. But maybe because the needle is size 4 and the yarn is not that thick so it creates holes. It still okay tbh although there's holes 😹. I'll try again for my other scarf using this pattern! Thank you so much!!❤️

Sorry, Rosa! I've been delayed in responding to comments and just getting around to it. I am not sure I can help with the issue that much. The only thing I can think off is that perhaps your tension (how tight you hold yarn) is a little loose. Can try knitting it a bit tighter, especially tugging on yarn as you switch from a purl to knit in the pattern and that might help. Let me know if try this and hoping it works. Hi Rajish, good question. Typically, if you used medium weight 4 (worsted weight yarn). @@KnittycatsKnits my skarf is coming out great. can you tell me how i can make this into a aphgan? do i just mae long rows and sew them together ?
@KnittycatsKnits
@KnittycatsKnits 3 жыл бұрын
That's great to hear, Carol! To make an afghan, the easiest way is to knit it up in one piece. So you would just need to cast on more stitches. Can knit up a small swatch first with the yarn and needles that you wish to use to determine gauge (or if you are planning to use same yarn/needles as scarf, then can use scarf itself as gauge). Then cast on those many stitches. For an afghan you will likely need to cast on more than 100 stitches and so will also need longer needles (best to use a 24 or 36-inch circular needle; if you have to buy one, suggest the longer one). The other way of making individual strips and joining them (seaming) can also work (especially to knit strips in diff colors) but seaming may be cumbersome. There is a way of knitting these different strips via intarsia knitting. Gives me an idea for a video. Stay tuned and will plan to post it in the next week or two!😊

Good question, Rosalie! It actually depends on the yarn you are using and needle size. The best way to know number of stitches is to knit a small swatch/sample. For this one-row repeat pattern, suggest casting on 10 sts for the sample (which will be a multiple of 4 sts plus 2 sts, so the pattern will work). Please see my figuring out gauge video at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hcl4Y8idsrvIqKM.html. Hop that helps. Thanks for watching and best wishes🤗

Hi Jan, I don't know if it has a specific name besides saying it is a one-row repeat stitch (:
