Knitting Help - Reactive Lifelines Using a Circular Needle

If you've already made a mistake and a "reactive" lifeline will keep you from making an unraveling mess, a tiny circular needle is a good tool to use.
The 40" size 0 US needle I use for this technique is an Addi Turbo needle.
The yarn I'm using for demonstration is Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Bulky.
The DPNs I used are Knitter's Pride Bamboo DPNs.
My nail polish is by Julep, color "Evan": refer.julep.com/s/stacip

Also, I have to amend my comment yesterday about the person not being willing to provide support for the entarsia pattern I was attempting. I don't want to give an unwarranted bad impression of a designer. Originally I got the pattern off Pinterest and whoever posted it there said there'd be no support. However, I went to Ravelry, per your suggestion, and the original designer answered my questions immediately. Thank you!!

I usually use just a tapestry needle and scrap yarn but this looks even better and easier. Plus, it gives me an excuse to buy another set of needles. 😁 Thanks for making this video, Staci!

Great tips. These issues are exactly why I've switched exclusively to interchangeable needles. Use a stopper on one end and once the lifeline has been positioned, you just change back to your required needle tips. So easy.

Thank God for you Stacy, and this tip! It’s been awhile since I’ve picked up my needles so I’d started a small ear warmer with cables. I almost gave up on the piece because I couldn’t figure out how to fix a mistake I’d made. Then last night before I went to sleep, I remembered this tip of yours. Slacker that I am, I haven’t bought the circular needle yet so I used a tiny, long bamboo needle instead. It worked great and my ear warmer is saved. Thanks for all you do for the knitting community. Blessings and much love to you this holiday season.

This is such a better idea than what I came up with. I did the same thing, but with a tapestry needle threaded with scrape yarn. This way makes it so much easier with the needle to knit back onto after you've ripped back. Thanks!

Finally ordered a 40" size 0 circular needle after I had need of one the other day and used a 40" size 3 instead (which I got only a couple months ago for socks). This is way easier, I think, than 'sewing' in a reactive life line. And you can knit off of it, too, which is also an advantage. Thank you so much. :-)

Great video! I've had to do this *more than one time, less than, oh 50 or so?* lol... I use interchangeable circular needles for *everything* so when I have to do this, once I get the stitches onto the cable, I can then just switch to the correct size needles and I'm all set again.

Stacy, Thank you for this video. I love the idea of the long size 0 needle - a great idea. I wonder if you'd consider a video showing how to do this on a piece with both knits and purls to pick up. Hi Staci, and thanks for all your great videos! I'm knitting a sleeve (top-down, on circular needles), and now that I tried it on I think I need to reconfigure the shaping. Can I use this technique to secure the stitches around the base of the armpit - even though, because it's in the round, it's a big spiral? Many thanks!

Thank you! This is just what I needed now as I have to unravel six rows on a circular needle. I must admit I crossed all my fingers on you turning your work around though, so I could have seen which part of the purled stitches you’d pick up on the extra needle (as I’ve got pattern with both knit and purl). An idea for a future video, perhaps? 😊

You make it so easy! I always tink, even if it's multiple rows, unless I have made and found the mistake early on, then I will just rip out and start over, what a pain. I will try this next time. Thank you! I have a pattern kit which I purchased. The instructions say: Row 2: (WS) Loop n’lock, with the explanation of "loop n’ lock: Pull yarn from the last section worked on the previous row. , Lock it into place with the first stitch of the next row to form a Loop." I don't get it, I'm more of a visual learner and you explain things so well, which is why you are my go to help. Do you have a video that you can point me towards that explains this? Thanks!

For someone who knits left handed/mirrored, would I put the needle into the left leg of the stitch so they wouldn’t be twisted? I’m brand new to all of this and need to go back to fix a mistake in a sweater and would be devastate to rip it back and realize I did it wrong! Thank you so much!

Thank you for such a useful video!! I've tried this before but always end up with some stitches on a row above or below...could you possibly do a video on what to do when that happens?
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 7 жыл бұрын
If that happens, you really have to start over again with stringing the lifeline on the next row below. The good news is that if you do have to redo the lifeline, it will be easier to keep track of the correct row, because you will have unraveled a bit and the live stitches will be closer to the lifeline you're stringing.

More complicated stitch combos (like lace) really require proactive lifelines - reactive lifelines are nearly impossible.

Hi! I'm working on the toe of TAAT Toe up sock. I used KfB for increases...how do I put a reactive lifeline w/increases? I can't see exactly where to put it on the end of the row!). Any thoughts on what I'm looking for (I was having a bad toe up day -used 2 cast on methods (I am an avid sock knitter -I think it's COVID brain!) and finally I got things going and I made a mistake but do NOT want to cast on again (for a few days LOL)...any thoughts! LOVE the slo mo videos!!! So helpful
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 3 жыл бұрын
That's a tough one, and not something I can really explain in a comment. Since it's just the toe of a sock, I recommend ripping back and reknitting it, since it isn't much knitting. Or you can knit a swatch with kfbs and really focus on exactly what the increases look like in the row, so you can apply it to your sock.

You may need to rework how you're picking up the stitches - if you're picking up too many, the work will pucker. Without seeing your work, I really can't say for sure. I suggest visiting your local yarn shop with your work, let them take a look, they can give you in-person advice.
