To work the Russian Bind-Off:
1. Knit 2
2. Slip both stitches back to left needle
3. Knit two together
4. Knit 1
Repeat Steps 2-4 across all stitches, until just one stitch is left.
Break yarn, pull end through last loop and tighten.
Information on things you'll see in the video:
The sweater on the mannequin is my Easy-Knit Sweater Jacket, pattern + video tutorial:
verypink.com/2013/11/27/easy-k...
The shawl I'm wearing is the Clapotis pattern, knit with Noro Silk Garden yarn:
knitty.com/ISSUEfall04/PATTcla...
The yarn I used in the samples is Malabrigo Chunky, in color Polar Morn. The needles I'm using are Clover Bamboo DPNs.
The nail color I'm wearing is CND Shellac polish, in color "Midnight Swim".

Works wonderfully for toe-up socks. Nice and stretchy and gives a nice edge. Also looks good in pattern for 1/1 ribbing. When the socks are off, it will seem a bit "ruffly" but once you put them on, it all lines up.

Hi Staci, by being Russian and knitting all my life, I've never seen this cast-off before! :-) Well, my Motherland is huge, so you never know what one can find... You like to learn many tips and tricks and I thought there is a one that we use a lot at home - we cast-on (long tail of course) with 2 needles held together. This way your first row is not as tight and hard to knit. It is a very common technique we use. Also, we never knit first stitch - it is a slip stitch instead.

Iryna Boehland This is just one of at least 4 variations or techniques called the Russian bind off that I have seen on KZfaq. Maybe it’s different in different areas of Russia. Who knows.

I did time doing a Civil War era scarf called a Nubia (from a period pattern). I say did time because it took FOREVER!!!. The sides as you knit end up being the ends and the cast on and off are actually the sides. Having a stretchy cast on and off was essential. The Russian Cast on/Cast off was wonderful and really opened up the work.

I love love love your videos! The clear explanations, the perfect visuals, the discussion around the topic (looking at a sample bound off in pattern and comparing to an all-knit bind-off, etc). And as a previous viewer remarked, your hands and nails are truly gorgeous - I do hope you have a little sideline as a hand-model!

wow! Thanks so much! I was playing along with the innovations large knitting machine the other day, making a super quick hat with it. I hate the bind off that they suggest, so I took the stitches off of the machine with a circular needle, and tried to do a regular bind off LOOSELY, but that still didn't fit my Hubby's head. This will do it for sure, as well with the hand knitted hats I do! Thank you again!

Russian bind-off is really nice for any kind of lace pattern that needs to be super stretchy. For socks I prefer Jenny's stretchy bind-off, which is both stretchier than the rib you work it on and less distorting.

WOW! I realized less than 20 minutes ago that the shawl I made for a friend isn't going to block properly because I used the normal bind off and it won't stretch. The stitch will be complementary to the shawl stitch, too. I'm going to rip the binding, find the left over yarn, and make the shawl a bit bigger and use this bind off! Thanks, Staci! What timing!

What a great bind-off! I knit some socks from your toe-up pattern for my family over Christmas, but my dad's cuffs are a bit tight at the top because of the normal bind-off I used. The bind-off in this video might actually be a solution to that problem! Thanks for posting it!

Great video! I know with the russian bind off, another way to work it "in pattern" is to p2tog instead of k2tog when your pattern calls for a purl stitch. just another variation :)

Hi Stacy! Thanks for the video! With my las project I used a similar bind off. I wanted it to be stretchy and it was. I also knit two and slip the sts from the right needle to the left and knit them together but through the back loop. This way I actually put the left needle into the two sts as if to slip them but not slipping just knitting them together. And the edge looks as common bind off but a lot more stretchy. I don't know how is it called but I guess it's not the same, is it? Thanks again!

Would this bind off work for a scalloped lace edge like the wishbone stitch? A standard bind off gives a straight edge. I want to keep the scallops as they appear at the beginning. I am knitting a lace stole.

Have you ever gotten around to binding off socks with the Icelandic, and/or the Russian bind-offs? I'm curious how the stretchy bind-off's compare, especially for sock tops. Thanks! I love coming back and re-viewing your vids.

Hi, I'm still a beginner, and still learning the lingo. I have a few questions! 1. What did it mean in your video when you said you knit the bind-off "in pattern" as opposed to the first swatch that you showed the Russian bind off with? 2. Also, you mentioned your swatches were made using seed stitch, correct? It's a beautiful looking stitch, and I would love to find a pattern that I could use that with. 3. The first two stitches for the Russian Bind off, would that be equivalent to just knitting the first two stitches together through the back loop? 4. Lastly, how does this bind-off go with socks? I know you mentioned it earlier on in your video. Thank you for being so patient with all my questions!
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 7 жыл бұрын
Binding-off "in pattern" means to knit the knits and purl the purls as you BO, maintaining the pattern established in the fabric. I don't have a video on seed stitch, it is *knit 1, purl 1* across the row, then purling the knits and knitting the purls on every following row, alternating stitches as you did in the first row. Your third question - no, knitting the stitches separately then together is not the same as knitting tbl. There is a better BO for toe-up socks: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iciqmKiYm76xp4E.html

There isn't really a cast-on that looks like this, but to match stretchiness, I'd go with the German Twisted cast-on: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i8mnoKamrt_QeX0.html
