Sun Dragon is starting a knit-a-long in April 2022 for the Ranunculus sweater by Midori Hirose, and I'll be attempting to keep up with some videos that can assist the pattern. I will try not to reveal too much of the pattern, you can get your own copy from the pattern writer on Ravelry (about $6.50):
www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...
We love this pattern in the shop because it is so customizable, you can make it on any yarn from a lace weight to worsted weight, can alter the neckline, sleeve length, and torso length, and since it's designed to have enormous positive ease, you can do all of it on a size 10 needle, often without testing your gauge.
This video is the third in the series, laying out as clearly as I can the Double Twist Loop Cast On, the tighter of her two cast ons (they are both pretty open-necked).
I'll be doing my best to build a playlist of videos that I've already make that could be helpful as well.
Consider subscribing, suggest videos you want to see below, and check out the Sun Dragon Sideshow, Liz and I are always making fun things. We will be talking a lot about the Ranunculus as well during this knit-a-long over there:

Let me know what else you would be interested in seeing in a video :)

Oh my word! I have been knitting for over 50 + years, worked in a yarn Shoppe 22 years ago. ( not any more ). I have tried so many times to learn this crochet/ tubular cast on. I put the dogs in a daycare situation so I had the day to myself and try my hardest to do this. I could not. I just went with the long tail cast on for 2 previous Ranunculus . Your video did it! Your kindness. Your ability to convey the instructions. The pace of your voice and quality and clarity made this happen. I am thrilled. I am on Video 3 and so enjoying you and the process. I plan to start and knit my 3 rd Ranunculus in Shibui - Twig. Not sure of my needle size as yet. I think this cast on will work. I however really enjoyed video 1 in this series as it really enhances the neckline possibilities. I do want a closer neckline to my neck vs. loose ( er)…. So I will see. I am late to your April party of a KAL . Sounded fun. I plan to follow your site so maybe next time. I just want to say a hearty Thank You for this. I will be back. Take care!

Very helpful video. May I suggest using a straight needle for the initial crochet cast on with the waste yarn and then switching to the circular needle to continue? I found it much easier. Also, you can use a bigger straight needle if you need a looser cast on. Thank you so much for the video! I'm finally starting my ranunculus!

These videos are so helpful as I am a relatively new knitter and would not have been able to proceed without them. I tried several times to begin with the crochet cast-on (magic loop) and kept getting very long ladders where it was attaching in the round and kept losing track of the stitches. I ended up moving to the other cast-on so I could keep going, but wonder what would be helpful to do the crochet cast-on in the future. I don't know if magic loop was the problem or the fact that I didn't know to swap stitches when joining in the round until I watched another video. Anyhow, thank you for the excellent instruction.
@SunDragonTipsTricks
@SunDragonTipsTricks Жыл бұрын
I think magic loop could have been the difficulty there- if you don’t have short enough cords, you could try two circulars instead, but the beginning collar can be challenging if not done on a short (16”) circular.

Thanks for the video. I've tried doing the cast on using magic loop. Honestly!! I'm ready to throw the whole thing out. I've decided that in order to give this method one more try I might have to find a short cord and wondered what size your needle is in terms of length. You seemed to be able to breeze through the cast on using your short cord length... Slipper needles and long cords are kinda hard to manipulate especially once you add a crochet hook. Thanks again.
@SunDragonTipsTricks

Hi Ann- I’ve almost always cast on with 16” length needles for collars of sweaters- for a traditional interchangeable set the smallest length you can make is 24”, if you can swing it a separate fixed 16” circular needle is worth it to make this easier. ❤️
@leetlesnyder
@leetlesnyder Жыл бұрын
Hi…I am beyond thrilled that you are doing this series! I’ve wanted to knit this for so long and did not feel experienced enough! I have a question about needle length… when do you switch from the 16” needles to longer ones, and what length do you switch to? I am trying to decide what kind of needles to buy. If you have 16” length needles, what size tips do you use? Thank you again for amazing videos!
@SunDragonTipsTricks
@SunDragonTipsTricks Жыл бұрын
I’ve made the whole sweater on 16” and 32” needles, that should be enough. I’m not sure what answer you’re looking for with the size tips- 16” is the length from tip to tip, if you have interchangeable needles this is only accomplished with 4” tips and an 8” cord, or something similar, and I’ve done all my Ranunculi on US 10 needles, 6mm. You can always make them on other size needles, depending on the needle size and your gauge the size of the sweater will shift. ❤️❤️❤️
@leetlesnyder
@leetlesnyder Жыл бұрын
@@SunDragonTipsTricks Thank you so much! Yes, by tips, I meant 4” or 5”? I have a small set of interchangeable needles, but I don’t have a cable to make the 16”. I am thinking of buying a new set, but I noticed they either come with 4” or 5” tips. I think, from shopping around, it looks like you can only get 16” with 4” tips, like you said. I hope I’m making sense! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Again, I appreciate you and your videos SO much! ❤️

@SunDragonTipsTricks
@SunDragonTipsTricks Жыл бұрын
I’m on 16” needles- sometimes depending on the fiber you are working with there will not be much stretch to the yarn. My assistant casts on 90 and skips the increases just after the collar when this happens.
@SunDragonTipsTricks

For the crochet chain you cast on half the number you’ll end up with, if I remember correctly, so you may want to try 45 if you’re going to do what my assistant does 🤷‍♀️

Sooo helpful! And yet, that last yarn over stitch is just so loose even 5 rows later. I've tried it 4 times. I am working in lace weight. It's very fine and slippery on my size 10 addi turbos. Is this light a yarn the problem? Or is it the cable that seems rather firm and pulls the on the first/last stitches in the round?
@SunDragonTipsTricks

It could be any of the above, it may just have to be fixed at the end with some creative sewing?

I’ve decided to try this pattern using 100%silk yarn, and after casting with this method, the circumference is still too small to join the stitches in the round. It just doesn’t look big enough to slip over my head, Is it perhaps me cause silk doesn’t stretch enough? Should I try the larger yoke or use larger needles ?

Hello, I hope you are still checking comments. I followed what you did (thank you!) but I'm working with fingering weight yarn and so I'm not even close to making it around 16 inch needles. I'm going to give dpns a try, but do you have any other suggestions?
@SunDragonTipsTricks
@SunDragonTipsTricks Жыл бұрын
Hi Wendy- if it won’t stretch around 16” needles, it also could be the fiber of what you’re using for the provisional cast on. The first few rows of this cast on doubles your number of stitches from 30 to 60, and when you release the provisional cast on it gets much wider. DPNs could work too :)

@SunDragonTipsTricks

Hi! It really depends on how loose or tight the cast on is- my assistant does regular long tail but casts on 90 stitches, the number it is increased to after the ribbed collar, to make sure it is loose enough.

If you’re asking about shorter than 16”, I’m not sure many if any companies have that- in the 12” circulars I carry at the shop they only go up to an 8 (5mm). You may have to use DPNs or 2 circulars?

For the collar I used a 16”, or 40cm I believe. That first row can be tight depending on the material you cast on with, if it’s the provisional cast on. We have them in our online shop, though it is too challenging to ship outside the US currently.

Hi Annette, thanks for your feedback. I am always striving for balance between trying to keep things at a good pace, not too fast, and not having the videos be too long, I apologize I can't make it just right for everyone. One of the reasons I show my stitches several times is sometimes it helps to see the repetition as well. As to the comment here, do you mean when I joined to start working in a circle? That is at minute 9, if that helps. I also mention that I have a separate video specifically on provisional cast on, I may have gone slower in that since it wasn't covering so many things. All the best. ❤️

Hi Annette, I hear your frustration, and can relate to projects being in time out. Happy to help when it’s possible, and I understand the frustration with videos sometimes. I think there is a setting where you can slow down the speed on videos even more, and yes, often times repetition is helpful. I’m a big fan when we do lessons in the shop to have students watch then do- watch through one time, then we try to do it together. Sometimes watching a video and trying to do new stitches at the same time is too much to keep track of. ❤️
