Knockdown! Solo Sailor Simon Curwen: Onboard footage from Hobart to Chile

Simon's hydrovane was damaged after a knock-down in a Southern Ocean storm with large seas. He and 'Clara/Howdens' arrived safely in Puerto Montt on 9 February 2023 to repair his windvane and sprayhood after 156 days at sea.

It was a truly fantastic achievement by Simon to regain the lead and take line honours at the Finish. He prepared the boat so well and thoroughly deserved to win the GGR outright. Nobody could have foreseen that the self steering would fail in such a way and necessitate carrying a spare. Keen to see the results of the forensic examination.

Now I would hope see a report on the hydrovane, as well as other repairs that were completed. He is truly a great sailor

Brilliant sailor such a chilled out man Simon is. GGR2026 for Simon hopefully. Feel bad for the people who have to sell there boats when they finish the race

Yeah I hope he makes another trip and if I remember correctly he has a daughter that also sails maybe she takes the boat one year as well only time will tell

"Clara " always behaved well in even big following seas,but I had an "Aries" windsteering on her then.

Sad this set him back. Lesson here, two fold: luck plays a greater role than many are willing to admit and it is always good to have spare parts for the most vulnerable/necessary equipment onboard.
