One of my co workers used to do band promotion and was around KL a lot. He said PacSun was literally never in a bad mood. He was always such a sweet guy. What a great band KL is!

This is the mix delivered straight from their engineer at front of house. This mix is for the room that night, not a studio environment. We are lucky to have a busy crew take time to get us any kind of audio feed on a busy sold out show day. This gives a unique perspective into how the kit is mixed for tour, and seems relevant to the convo. Live mix is a special beast.

@@drumrundown While I totally understand this, I feel like it would be better to have a high quality stereo recorder placed close to the kit almost like a smash mic - that way you could have more consistency in the audio over multiple videos. I find often times a FOH mix isn't ideal for at home listening purposes, especially when they're catered to the band/genre This however, may interfere with stage setup or require additional setup time which may not be ideal during soundcheck/load-ins. I'm happy we're getting these rundowns at all - just my 2c

@@drumrundown definitely respect this. Not discounting the work done by the tour crew. I know Matt’s a phenomenal FOH, it’s just the live mix is so different in a stream/recording mix the actual sound of the drums is completely diminished imo. But fr props to the KL crew. Those guys are dialed in.

For the wooden beater argument: It's also on a drum that's basically on the floor (with pedals) and might have a patch on it. Play what gets the sound you want.

totally. tonequesting is always the best part. a lot of folks have said those low boy beaters are giving them a certain quality they love. I still need to try them as well. I am in my skate wheel era at the moment, lol!

@@drumrundown Talking about skateboard wheel beaters, you should do Dave Witte of Municipal Waste. He used them before switching to Trick beaters. I'm not sure what he's using since switching to SJC.

Great video- great interview! I know some people have been saying this but running a Zoom recorder or even a shotgun mic mounted on the camera would be a great solution to getting the drum sound for some live playing:)

What are the drum sizes? The kicks look deeper than most. Are we going back to 22x20s instead of the 22x18s on every kit nowadays?

Chris mixed our Polyphia episode, and def is our go to guy when we get stems! This stereo mix was fed directly from front of house into camera. We gotta get in and out quick!

To anyone who's never tried wooden beaters. Give the lowboys a shot, I absolutely love mine and go with the leather daddy and it can be flipped around for a wood striking surface. Sounds so killer.

This was good, but I wish you went into a little more depth about the specifics of his snare, and the recording process on the new album. I know he talked about the snare being open, and a little bit about how he got that sound, and you spoke about style of snare it was, and his new side snare, but I'm not fully aware what he meant by some of it. I was just curious about why the snare is so prominent on this new record. Regardless, Kevin has an awesome kit, and he seems like a chill dude.

@@drumrundown I appreciate the reply, and I understand that vibe, but what I meant was why does his snare have that St. Anger sound on the recording. Lars notoriously didn't have the snares engaged on the drum for that album, so is Kevin doing something similar? How tight or loose does he keep his snares, or does it being bell brass play into the sound? Does the the tuning of his snare play into it, cause the snare on Suicide Silence's No Time To Bleed is hand tightened, which plays into the sound of that particular snare? Those are the specifics I had hoped he'd explain, cause his snare doesn't sound like that on any of their other outputs, and I know they were using a new producer on this album, so was it a particular way Drew mic'd Kevin's snare? Did he mix it a specific way to make that ping extra prominent? Which snare has that sound to it, cause he just added that side snare, so is that side snare specifically used for that particular sound, and his other snare has a more standard crack to it? I'm just mega curious about all those little details. Not trying to be a pain in the ass, though, my bad. This was still a cool rundown.

The drum mix always sounds so BAD on these drum rundowns. Straight from the console or monitor engineer, I bet. A stereo mix from a live console never ever sounds good recorded. Please fix it.

@@drumrundown multitrack recording is really easy these days and it’s really easy to get a good quick mix. Or you could bring a Yamaha EAD10 to record these sessions. For sure a EAD10 will sound way better than this. Don’t get me wrong, I love these drum rundowns, but as you’ve maybe already noticed, there’s always comments about the drum sound being really bad and I am NOT the first one or the only one who thinks that.
