If hell had a guitar tone, it’d be what Knocked Loose’s Isaac Hale and Nicko Calderon conjure up from their Ibanez 7-string beasts. The band’s mission since day one has been to pummel listeners with the most-extreme form of hardcore music. The past decade they’ve throttled through all limits making each break down, each riff, each scream, and each performance outdone by the next. A more recent (and seemingly) conflicting goal has been to infect the mainstream with their brutality. Their brand-new third album, You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To paired them with pop producer Drew Fulk (Kevin Gates, NLE Choppa, Disturbed, Lil Wayne), the last two years they’ve played Coachella and Bonnaroo, in 2022 they partnered with hip-hop duo $uicideboy$ for a sold-out tour, and they were just announced as direct support for Slipknot’s 25th anniversary tour. Both goals are being accomplished as their sound has never been more punishing or popular.
Before Knocked Loose’s sold-out show at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works, guitarists Isaac Hale and Nick Calderon invited PG’s Perry Bean onstage for a fresh conversation about their updated mercenary squad. During our time with the Hale and Calderon, we learn about their custom 7-string Ibanez doom brooms, Hale explains moving on from tube amps and pedalboards to Quad Cortex units and MIDI switching, and Calderon details finding his place in the band and adjusting to an extra low-B string.

@@joshguy5221 They were first popularized by Paul Stanley from KISS way back when Ibanez introduced them back in the mid/late-'70s and he's still closely associated with them to this day, but yeah in terms of heavy metal Daron is definitely up there

Honestly i like the ibanez names. Trying to find a specific fender strat is like a needle in a haystack, but with ibanez its so easy to find the exact model youre looking for

Yeah exactly, they're more or less uniquely identifieably by their model names. Also it's really just a combination of the Series, string number, wood, and sometimes extra stuff like tremolos. Hard to remember but no one's calling them by their model name anyways, everyone just says "RG" "Iceman" whatever.

The Fender (and Gibson) thing of naming guitar models with a year they weren’t made in is such confusing garbage too. Check out this ‘79 American Heritage Classic Tele, it’s the 2008 model.

@@nibe5775 that's because it doesn't exist. I don't know why he gave that model number, probably because Ibanez told him, but this is 100% a custom shop. There's not a single AZ with white body and headstock out there. Also the fixed bridge and single knob.

@@channtastic ahh the Hoosier dome, nice. I think my old band played with church tongue I believe twice if I recall correctly when they were down in the dc Maryland Virginia area. I forgot they changed from conquerors to church tongue as well.

So cool seing these guys their flowers! I saw KL at a small club in Dallas with Terror when laugh tracks dropped. Ran into Isaac before the show, he was just chilling by himself listening to music, said i can't wait for their set. Gave me a pat on the back and said thanks buddy. Nicko's AZ is interesting! I had the one with the same router password lol...AZ24047. Was a little different though...HSS with a trem. Interesting that they used the same exact model number. I traded mine for something else with a thinner neck. It's cool that Nicko was able to get a slimmer neck on his, I didn't know Ibanez did that on AZ models, thought they all had the same medium kinda neck, even the signature models seem to have the same specs. Perks of being an artist I guess...if it's a reasonable enough request you'll get taken care of. I saw a live video of Knocked Loose where one of the guitarists was using the completely stock AZ24047 (perhaps it was Nicko). Those guys (and/or their techs) clearly know how to setup a guitar nicely to get them working well in drop G. I actually preferred to tune up to drop B on mine using the stock strings to keep it feeling tight (and drop B sounds awesome on a 7 string when using the baritone version of the tuning).

The quad cortex is so simple, easy and it's a smooth transition and yet it's so complex to configure and need a tech to get it as close to your old tube amp as possible but still have a lot of tweaking / patch tests to eventually improve the sound? 🤦🏻♂️
