Cisneros is communicating the idea of earned advantages and un-earned disadvantages. It isn’t her fault that she found herself in a lacking position while growing up (un-earned disadvantage). But she’s learned to articulate this emotional reality through literature because she has the earned advantage of a post-graduate education that coaxed her God-given talent for articulate self-expression. Now that’s a beautiful thing that anyone - or culture - can appreciate. If we dare try to see life through the cultural lenses of others, we can learn to understand their story. The House on Mango Street will then transform into a lovely tale of one's struggle to prevail. And for the vitriolic uninformed: Don’t be too quick to knock a man (or woman) off a horse when you cannot appreciate what it took for them to get on. (For the record, I’m neither Latino nor do I speak Española.)

It amazes me how hateful the people in these comments are toward this woman, but then again, that's what happens when you provide a bunch of moody and perpetually angst-ridden middle-schoolers with access to the internet. I've read The House on Mango Street twice, once on my own and once at university, and I disliked it both times, mainly for stylistic reasons. But I've always found Cisneros a very intelligent and interesting woman. I could listen to her speak for hours. Just because you didn't like a book doesn't mean you have to attack the author.

I read the book so long ago, I don't remember if it was elementary or middle school but its stuck with me ever since. I remember a part in the book where the kids put high heels and walk down the street, dunno why that scene stuck with me in particular.

can you answer a question about the book: how Cisneros uses language to establish a distinct point of view within her novel. Consider how Esperanza’s personality, her observations of those she meets, or her experiences living on Mango Street are developed by Cisneros to create a distinct point of view within the novel

This book is absurd. Seems like everyone is an author these days regarding of the incoherent ramblings they attempt to engage their audiences with. I suppose it's just like the piece of art where someone dunked a crucifix in urine and called it art, in that light, this book may be considered art.
