This is a clip from "New Beginnings", the 6th episode (59th overall) of the fourth season of the 1979-93 CBS drama "Knots Landing". This is a historic episode as it is the last crossover episode between "Knots" and its' parent series it spun off from: the mega popular 1978-91 drama "Dallas". For the rest of the shows' run, "Knots" characters would occasionally cross over to "Dallas", but after this episode, no more "Dallas" characters crossed over to "Knots". This episode also ends a crossover plot that started on a "Dallas" Season 6 episode "Jock's Will". This (and "Jock's Will") aired originally in a special Friday night 10:00 time slot (instead of "Knots" customary Thursday night slot) on Friday, October 29, 1982.
Gary Ewing (Ted Shackelford) has returned to his hometown of Dallas for the will reading of his late father, oil magnate John Ross "Jock" Ewing, Sr., who perished in a South American helicopter crash in January 1982 (Jim Davis, the actor who played Jock on "Dallas" died from cancer shortly after "Dallas" wrapped up production of season four on April 26, 1981). Gary has received $10 million in a trust set up by his father with an allowance, leading Gary to resent that fact that even in death, Jock still didn't trust him.
His spirits are considerably lightened when his current side chick girlfriend/neighbor Abby Cunningham (Donna Mills) flies into Dallas to surprise him. At this time, Gary is still bemoaning the loss of not only his father, but the end of his marriage to his first love Valene (Joan Van Ark), who is in town to promote her first novel "Capricorn Crude", a fictionalized account of all the scandals of the Ewing family.
In his hotel room, after a bit of horsing around with Abby, Gary gets an unwelcome visit from his older brother John Ross "J.R." Ewing, Jr. (special guest star Larry Hagman), who comes to make sure that Gary is leaving Dallas after he says goodbye to their mother.''
After a few snide comments about Gary and his inheritance to a slightly amused Abby, Gary finally finds the courage and strength to stand up to his hated older brother, telling him that he doesn't need any charity from him or his hotel room (that J.R. paid for). Abby looks amazed and is slightly turned on by Gary's sudden resolve.
Getting the hint, J.R. does leave, but not before thanking Abby for "doing him (Gary) a world of good" and wishes that Jock "could have lived to see this day. Gary with guts, finally." J.R., for the first time, seemingly shows Gary equal footing as a Ewing and had earned his respect as a man.
This is a crucial moment in "Dallas" and "Knots" history as Gary finally stands up to J.R., who, along with Jock, tortured and bullied Gary all through childhood and adolescence, causing him to become an alcoholic, abandon his family, and half no self-assurance as a man. And that was before "Dallas" even aired the first episode in 1978.

That was what JR was hoping. Just as he loved Bobby more when he stood up to him or when Sue Ellen became strong he loved Su Ellen even more. I think JR wanted a relationship with Gary his entire life, but Gary was a loner and didn’t want anything to do with the family. Deep down it hurt JR and the fact Gary never asserted himself gave JR reason to bully. JR was deeply troubled and even Miss Ellie even regretted not paying closer attention to him as a youth as she believes JRs tendencies for destruction is for lack of attention she failed him.

Too bad we couldn’t see more of this afterwards. It was great to not only to see Gary stand up to ole JR, but for once they’re talking about their rivalry. Instead before, it was like the two would only acknowledge each other, but never confront their problems with one another. This one we got see them fight it out. I must admit, JR was right about Abby giving Gary the courage to stand up. Though, didn’t like Gary and Abby as a couple when they were one, I have to say Val was not that inspiring to Gary when confronting JR. She was one that made Gary believe running away was best, and wasn’t always happy when Gary wanted to be with family. It would of been nice to pursue the story further as to see the real reason why JR hated Gary so much. It’s obvious it’s more than jealousy as we all believed he envied Gary getting his mothers attention or really worried about him not living up to Jock’s standards. If the dream season hadn’t been a dream, more crossovers would of further occurred to reveal more to the sibling feud.

Although Abby came to Dallas whilst Jock's will was being read, her scenes took place on Knots and she never actually appeared on Dallas the show: one can only imagine how Miss Ellie, Sue Ellen and the others would have reacted if Abby had decided to move in on their territory! JR knew Abby was his equal and he respected her in ways that he could never respect the fundamentally powerless, submissive and downtrodden women who are so archetypal to Dallas the show. Abby was a truly liberated woman who would not have settled for playing second fiddle to the men in their Texan power games and that's why she was suited to an environment like California, where she could play the game on HER terms.

My mom was a fan of the show, and I remember the later seasons, but I'd love to watch it all from beginning to end. When I was in college back in the early 2000s I would watch it on Soapnet between classes, but I agree, we should be able to watch them all now somehow!

Gary may be an inept businessman and with a rather Weak or non descript Personality....but he would Win over JR in a physical fight....because Gary was much more Agile and athletically inclined then JR. Gary led a hardscrabble life partly in the Streets here and there when he was younger. ..while JR spent most of his working Life in a Cushy corner office. Most Probably Gary may have feared...that if HE ever raised a hand to Him...JR might have him arrested, or perhaps send someone After him to rough him up a little to 'even the Score' or something or at the very least 'twist things around' to everyone else over what may have happened. . Being estranged so long he probably felt he couldn't get away with making the occasional punching bag out of JR the way that Bobby and Ray did.

It's Knots Landing, the Dallas spin off that featured 3rd Ewing brother Gary and his wife Valene and was set in California. It ran concurrently at the same time as Dallas. Some of the cast of each show made appearances on the other in the early days which all stopped during the infamous dream season on Dallas as Knots Landing wisely chose to ignore the dream plot.
