The J7W1 was a Japanese fighter interceptor meant to intercept B-29 bombers in the late stages of WWII. Although the aircraft never saw operational use its remarkable design and history are the reason why it's featured in the series.

I saw the movie also. I was impressed with the accuracy of the representations of both the Shinden and the Yakukaze. However, if this video is correct, the filmmakers did invent (exagerate?) one detail for this aircraft. No spoilers. See the movie.

The designers of shinden developed this piece to use with jet engine in mind. All the problems during test maybe because they try using propeller engine as stopgap while they still developing jet engine. Sorry my bad english @@carpecanem611

If Ace Combat had a WW2 spinoff, I’d imagine these would be late game tier fighters, maybe the dreaded ace squadron. Experimental craft tend to show up as enemies in AC. Also, Yellow squadron Messerschmitts.

It's fascinating to consider just how late in the war the Shinden was being tested. Literally during the bombings. It's a real tragedy that they didn't get the chance to do that speed test, the data would be great to have. Thanks for making an episode on such an awesome and obscure bit of flight history.

@@Saviliana You mean the contra-rotating prop variant? Twin prop would make it a two engined heavy fighter/interceptor. And no Sanka was the manufacturer. The Mk.II was the one closer to the Shinden in Innocent Aces, the Mk.B was the one we see in the movie.

The flashback of The Sky Crawlers and The Magnificent Kotobuki intensifies Wait, what is The Magnificent Kotobuki? One of air combat themed anime that was finished aired on winter of 2019. From the director of Girl und Panzer, they featured vast of Japanese aircraft, even this J7W1 and J7W2 (yes, seriously J7W2!). Only have 12 episodes but still it was a thrilling anime for who into WW2 air combat.

Currently have Wings Of Steel on my smartphone and it's one of the highest rated planes. The other is the P-38 Lightning. In the game you fly combat missions as an American or Japanese combat pilot.

Not really, the Americans had a similar layout prototype called the XP-55 Ascender finished and flight tested by the Summer of 1943

Pewpew in the front, pusher in the back. Together with the XP-55 this is in my top five planes that I simply enjoy flying in War Thunder. Depending on the state of each flight model of course. Ah. Project Aces, Kotobuki world based game please.. Canard birds are so unique, still feels like people get confused by them in dogfights.

I suggest watching the new movie Godzilla minus-1 , a kickback to the original movie, where the monster was a scary representation of Atomic War. Set during the early days of rebuilding Japan after WW2, the protagonist uses one against Godzilla. A lot of research and care was used to make it realistic

If you shoot it using reverse AA strategies it just comes back to life. same thing happens when you shoot someone with a pistol upside down iirc. Gangsta grip being halfway up/down simply changes people into zombies. the more you know...

This plane is awesome. It looks like a backwards plane, or a race car. I first saw Sky Crawlers and it led me to the plane its based off of. It also appeared (or inspired the plane designs) in STGs. I always picked the Silver Sword in Battle Garegga.

Sexiest WW2 aircraft EVER! The only improvement it lacked was a full plexiglass bubble canopy. The rear combing of the first types created a rearward blindspot.

The Italians designed and built an almost identical aircraft to the "Shinden" in 1939. It was called the "Ambrosini SS4". It had a 960 hp engine turning a three bladed prop. which pushed it along at a speed of 355 mph, which for the time made it one of the fastest aircraft of the time. It had an armament of two 20mm cannon and one 30mm cannpn in the nose. The first prototype crashed and because the war had started, the Italians dropped the project and decided to concentrate on improving their existing aircraft.

Excellent video. I'm currently playing Wings Of Steel on my phone and the Shinden is my favourite Axis plane. The P38 Lightings are fast and have excellent firepower, but the Shinden out manoeuvres everything. I thought the Corsair was nimble till i tried this.

Nah. I think the world still go ahead with Jet powered aircraft. It's just only those plane you see in the show is prop driven. Remember, the conflict in Sky Crawlers wasn't fought by countries, but corporations. ;)

@@mammothmk3355 good point, jet driven aircraft cost more to operate and maintain then prop driven aircraft. so maybe that's why Rostock and Lautern manage to maintain a huge fleet of planes. the cost of a F-16 is around $18.8 M and a P-51 Mustang is $50 k. so i guess they chose quantity over quality. so perhaps the regular countries air force uses jets and Rostock and Lautern uses prop-driven planes and continue find ways to improve them through RnD.

And it would somewhat explain why prop plane manage to pull insane move like in the anime. ( Prop plane with modern tech injection) Althought tbh my knowledge of plane tech is minimal so maybe someone with better understanding can explain. ( Like the move the Teacher use in his plane. Can he do that? And assume he can do that when what is the requirement in order to archive that)

They have. It's called ASF-X Shinden II (designed by the Macross VF designer nonetheless). More or less a spiritual successor to the WWII shinden.

The next Ace Combat game should use WWII aircraft. Also maybe some early Cold War era fighters like the F86 Saber and MiG-15. Fans of arcade-style flying games have really been starved for new games throughout the entire 2010s... longer than that, even. The last AAA flying game was _Crimsons Skies: High Road to Revenge_ on the original Xbox, and that was released all the way back in 2003. Considering how beloved flying games were in the 90s and early 2000s, it's a shame they've been swept under the rug in favor of an over-saturation of first-person shooters.

Useful and entertaining. Thanks for posting. Personally? It looks unstable in pitch. Unstable in yaw is a given, considering the engine. Unsure, but I think the Vampire had trouble around all three axes. It might be a problem with the type.

This thing never flew an operational sortie so how could it be a "trump card"? It was not even in production, just prototypes entering the testing phase. It MIGHT have been quite effective had it become operational. Italy tested a very similar aircraft just prior to the outbreak of WWII.

Do you mean the first game it featured as a warplane? The J7W1 and J7W2 was in the PS2 game Sky Odyssey as a secret plane, but since that game was more or less a simplified flight simulator without plane combat I don't know if that counted in your books. At least, that's how I knew about the Shinden.

I think the biggest shame is that the USA didn't do any testing with the example we brought back.

Fuk Don't @ me J7W1 and the XP-55 are the most badass looking aircraft ever built Plus they are deadly jet killers in war thunder

J7W1 ACE COMBAT FAN. Again I ask is there any way to get this aircraft in AC7. An fly it in any missions??? Also how do u make the ADF-11 RED?? Is there a special in mission action u have to perform?? To get it from grey to red. Thank you. Scott

The ADF-11F’s metallic red skin is already unlocked from the get go.

The rear landing gear is certainly ass backward . It's hard to believe that the designer would have done such a thing . It would easily fall backwards on landing and hit the prop on the ground .
