"These sugars are the missing link in our food and maybe even the missing link in our medicine."
Geiske de Ruig explains us about a new science: Glycobiology, the science of sugars. You musn't confuse these essential sugars with the sugars you put in your coffee or tea. These essential sugars are important for cells to communication with each other. Geiske even advocates the relation of our modern diet and shortage of sugars with the rapid growth of health issues. She will convince you to take control over your own health by adjusting your diet. Everyone can start today!
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

I have been suggesting these to my patients for nearly 10 years. I see they respond to remedies more quickly when they are eating them.

Dr. de Ruig had me with this presentation right up until the last 2 minutes. It was there that she crossed the line from a discussion about the very legitimate study of "glycobiology" to the subject of "glyconutrients"- a marketing term for the line of nutritional supplements manufactured and marketed by a Texas company by the name of Mannatech. I'd be curious to know if she receives compensation in any way from the company or any of it's "educational" offshoots.

Hi Greg the Technology is owned by Mannatech by world wide patents. There is a world wide study of Glyconutrients from many Universities and Medical Research Companies around the world. Many doctors have prescribe these nutrients (sugars) by way of their diets not necessarily by taking Mannatech products.

Patents do not mean that they work. The patent says that it cures diseases from TB to AIDS, and can diagnose symptoms like cancer, or even reverse genetic disorders like down syndrome. And also, the term "glyconutrients" is not recognized or accepted by the society of glycobiology, unless specifically referring to the product, also required to be written in quotations. Also, the glycobiology department has written numerous things to "attack" mannatech and ambrotose. Do your research first before doing something very stupid.

I love this talk and have personal experience with how these sugars work to help the body heal itself. It is so much better when we supply our body the right nutrients so it can build and strengthen the cell to cell communication. Natural supplements are the best when vine ripened foods are not available.

Excellent! It's hard to realize that a simple solution such as these sugars could bring about so many positive responses in the body. The cells DO run our intelligent system. It's now obvious that our foods are lacking. If we can get these in a high quality supplement, than why not?

Although alarm bells started to go off when I first heard her mention "bad sugars" so early in the talk. A credible glycobiologist wouldn't refer to certain sugars as good or bad universally.

@leifotto4277

Cancer cells consume sugar at roughly 10x the rate of normal cells. That’s different than sugar causing cancer. You can starve cancer cells by eating a very low carb diet, so no sugar. But, again, sugar itself isn’t causing cancer, only nourishing it AFTER it starts. 6 years later, but that’s the answer! 🤣🌿

There's a wealth of science available on the science of glycobiology, including a report from the National Academy of Sciences - Transforming Glycoscience: A Roadmap for the Future. Anyone who thinks there is not solid science behind this research is misinformed.

TEDxTALKS doesn't mean 100% fact. Don't let this seal the deal for a MannaTech associate and buy into their products without first conducting serious in-depth research both on the subject and the company. Golden rule: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Better off saving A LOT of money and waiting a few years for clearer science.

The ancients knew full well this planet is a sphere. Sailors before Columbus came over here, maybe people from your ancestors' part of the world. In a free country there’s no such thing as a group whose motives cannot be questioned. Understand this if you understand nothing else: They consider us to be livestock. We need to focus on taking our country and governments back so we can figure out who to hang. Don’t understand? Follow my links. Read the quotes page first.

I think this speaker does the science a disservice when she says "bad" sugars and when she mentions getting the complex glycoproteins from "supplements". Surely, if the helpful glycoproteins are found in foods, we should be eating more of some foods and less of other foods to achieve a therapeutic balance??!
@janbarosh5879

You are absolutely right, Kay. If everyone did, we would have a much healthier world. How do they get the right foods if they eat from the grocery store where fruits and vegetables are picked green to have a shelf life. If you listen again, you will hear that she says we should get them from food or supplements. In other words we have a choice. Food is always best, but it is not always available with complete nutrition. Unfortunately, even when available, too many people will not choose to eat well. My take on this is that Dr. de Ruig is explaining the importance of these nutrients, telling people to eat more fruits and vegetables and letting them know what the options are in today's world. Also I'm not sure that calling them "bad" sugars does science a disservice. She is not talking to medical professionals. She is trying to put it into layman's language and "bad sugars" is commonly used today.

I agree with you here too Kay. Kay Walker My family physician, one of the highest rated in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area in Minnesota has said to me to try to get the vitamins and nutrients I need from fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, dairy, and lean meets whenever possible. He's said that they are absorbed much better through our food as opposed to supplements. Whenever someone makes an odd recommendation like the scientist in the video made, I always wonder about the sources of her or his research funding and conflicts of interest. TED needs to be careful about giving a wider platform to people who are representatives for corporate interests.

Jan Barosh I dont think anyone should use the word bad in relation to ANY nutrient! The word has moral connotations and thus relates to rules by authority figures. Humans tend to use food for emotional expression when it occurs in abundance so if something is labeled bad, it is both a signal to avoid it AND a signal that youll be secretly defying a disliked authority figure if you consume it. These emotional tendencies are the crux of over- and under- nutrition in westernised society. Nothing is bad in moderation, so lets just stop using that descriptor around food. If kids never learned the labels they would have half a chance of avoiding the behaviours!
@endangeredspecies1818

The main problem is that what is defined as a glycoprotein supplements is becoming "glyconutrition", which is literally a fraud. The contents CANNOT be absorbed by humans, as we lack the enzymes needed to digest those polysaccharides (complex sugars). These sugars can only be synthesized by the body using simpler sugars such as monosaccharides. Also, there is 0 scientific evidence that humans are lacking in the production of glycoproteins. Funny. So, basically, in simple words, this is literally a very good example of the placebo effect. Similarities? Well, both are sugar and are designed to keep a physiological "constant". Except that "glyconutrients" increase flautulence. Which makes it not only an overpriced placebo, but a fart pill.

I was originally looking at this video for more information on Glycobiology. Little did I know it would become a talk peddling snake oil to credulous people. The worst thing is that its stuck between credible science and so at first I didn't realise she was just trying to sell me crap.

So you are interested in learning about glycobiology but consider any products produced be the leaders in the field to be snake oil? Doesn't say a lot for your rational thought processes. You might want to take advantage of Adelaide Universities findings from a double blind placibo study that this snake oil actually increases cognitive functions in adults.

We have a saying I love to share. Condemnation Without investigation is the height of all arrogance... Sorry you show this in your lack of understanding about patents. You see anyone having the patent means other companies are not allowed to have the eight sugars in there product... Hmm I wonder what they are peddling. In regards to research, many many many Universities are spending Millions of dollars researching these sugars... Hey but what would I know im just a country boy from Australia.
