For their book, The Confidence Code, authors Katty Kay and Claire Shipman looked at research showing women lack the self-assurance they deserve in their careers - and just as important, examined what they should do about it. More: knlg.net/1vFiMIV

I like everything she said except: I don't think there is such thing 'over'-confidence. You are either confident or not. Over-confidence is arrogance. Confident...period.

We all say that, men and women, It’s human nature to doubt yourself. Stop making exceptions, we have to move past this. It’s not the 1950’s, we have all moved a long way together.

Interesting definition of confidence: "the stuff that transforms thoughts into action". I can't see how, with this definition, there can be "over-confidence". You either act on your thoughts or not. But I can see that "not being confident" in this sense might actually be an asset. It all depends on the thoughts you are thinking. I don't like how woman are constantly measured against qualities men seem to have more. Why on earth is it better to "act on your thoughts without hesitation"? With all the crap going on in people's heads, we would be better off if "men" learnt to act less on their thoughts, there are actually special therapies teaching you how to do that like ACT. And, maybe women are not "risk-averse" but instead more risk-aware and care more about the consequences? (Versus men thinking: sure, we can control nuclear power, what a joke). And about this: "Don’t give up the very qualities that make you valuable". It's only very recently that these "qualities" are actually considered to be valuable. In general, the western civilization, especially the US, devalues the feminine, the natural feminine that is, and every woman feels that lack of respect, consciously or unconsciously. And this accounts for the following: "It’s that women’s perception of their ability skews below their actual ability... They don’t believe they are as good as they are." It's not that the perception of their ABILITY skews below their actual ability. It's that the "thought" that "the feminine is less than..." (as a "species"), which still is the very foundation of western civilization, adds a negative evaluation to anything they might do. Just do the math: "skill level" minus "I am worth less" = perception skewed.

"Isn't the solution to get men down to the right level of confidence?" Just wow! And the answer by Katty Kay was not a resounding No. What a sad worldview.
