This exact heater probably saved myself and my family’s life in 1993. Get one, keep it maintained and keep 10 gallons of K1 kerosene on hand. Regardless of the price per gallon, the fuel will be worth its weight in gold when your power is off for 7-10 days and it goes down to 15 degrees overnight.

Several winters ago my husband and I bought this exact Dyna Glo 1000BTU Radiant Kerosene Heater. We bought it for a back up if the heater ever went out. We bought it at Home Depot. When we were buying it a lady came by with a flat loader shopping cart. She wanted to buy all the gallons of the white, less odor she could buy. She said that she lives up in the mountains and three years ago, they had a power outage that lasted three weeks. She bought this and placed it on the main floor. She had a split entry house about 4,000 sq feet on both the upstairs and the downstairs. She placed it next to the railing so the heat could go downstairs as well as the main floor where she kept it. She said that used it for the entire month, and the total cost to heat her entire home was only $60.00. Heating her home during the winter with electric heat usually cost them $300.00 a month. She couldn't believe how warm and comfortable they were using just this heater. My husband and I immediately choose this same heater and 30 gallons of clean kerosene. We took it home and tried it out. I never went back to heating my home with our natural gas furnace. My husband grew up in Montana and the used kerosene to light their home, and also heat their home. There never was any physical damage to anyone in the family. I gave the one to my daughter, and have one, along with the gallons of fuel for the year into our emergency supply things. This is also useful to heat a large tent if you happen to be living in a tent, whether it is camping or an emergency situation. This particular heater is the very best I have ever seen. I highly recommend it. I have included several cement flat stones to sit it on in our nylon tent. I highly recommend it. We live on the coast in NW Washington on Fidalgo Island. It gets cold and windy during the winter. I heat the house up and then turn it off..... Later in the afternoon I usually turn it on again to heat up the house to keep it warm during the night. I turn it off when we go to bed. I highly recommend this.

To light with the electronic igniter: Lower the wick all the way down, push and hold the igniter button, now while holding the igniter button raise the wick with the knob. It should light.

Since he skipped it, I will add that the siphon pump supplied with the kit works quite well. Close the vent on the top of the vent. Place the stiff side of the siphon into the kerosene supply, and place the flexible tube into the heater fuel tank. Pump the bulb to get the siphon starte. When the fuel reaches the level you want, open the vent and the siphone will empty itself. It works mush better than the funnel with no spill, as long as you dont let it overfill. One other thing...the igniter works well, but it takes a little time to work. Dont put it into the side of the wick, Put it on the TOP of the wick. I have been running mine for a while now, and I no longer smell it when it runs. I suggest that you run the first tank outside or in the garage so that the smell of the manufacturing oils burns off. After that, you cannot smell it anymore until you turn it off. As far as fuel, there is an internal tank, and there is a supply tank. The supply tank fills the internal tank. So you can first fill the internal tank, and then re-fill the supply tank for maximum fuel volume. You can buy fuel at Tractor supply stores, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes at about 10.00 per gallon. But you can buy a 5-gallon blue gas can (Blue for kerosene) and buy your kerosene in bulk from a gas pump at Sheetz Gas Stations. They generally have a kerosene pump next to the store door. That runs about $4.00 per gallon. If you want to inspect your fuel for water, pour a small amount of kerosene into a Mason jar and swirl it around. If there is water in the fuel, it will look like obvious, because oil and water do not mix. To learn how water looks, you can add a teaspoon of water to the mason jar (NOT THE GAS CAN) in order to educate yourself on how to spot water in the fuel.

Do be aware that doing the dry burn on the wick as recommended (or at least every two tanks) is absolutely necessary to avoid an unclean burn, fortunately it's easy enough to do. I'm burning dyed K1 kerosene and do a dry burn every two tanks and this is working great. This unit will heat a little over the 500 square feet that it is rated for depending on the temperature. On days it isn't bitter cold this heater will do a fair amount more. This makes an excellent emergency heat source, and also in my situation, it is a little more efficient than the electric heat in the teen temps and below.

When the power is out for a day and the temperature drops toward freezing inside this heater would look awful damn good to anyone in that situation.

Never thought life could be all about keeping the house warm!:) as in Holland you just turn up a gasheater and let the thermostat do his job! Now I shuffle heaps of firewood with a wheelbarrel and charge the woodstove all day and night with logs! It keeps me busy and my wife and son comfortably earm!

We bought one of these about 15 years ago. It's still working just as it did the day we bought it. We use it every winter, all winter long. We've actually never had to replace the wick in all that time.

a very good video, I borrowed my friend's during our "Ice Storm" in 1998 and it was the exact model you have. it worked so well that I used it in our tent which covered our driveway and in -15 I could wash my car outside in short sleeves. I did start it each time with those batteries and they worked every time. during that time I lent it to my bro and while using this in his home the fire Marshall told him it was too dangerous indoors which I though was garbage for this to be used only outdoors. I will be buying another one and due to this video am glad I can use it as my area often loses power during the -20 winters here in Montreal thanks. NL

great video I watched this several years ago and still like it but my friend bought a "Kerosun Radiant 140" in the mid 90's and I lent it to my bro. for our Ice Storm in Quebec in '98. the problem was the Firefighters said it was toxic and not to use it in the house. as you said with yours it only has a limited range for the wick but this unit seems to have an override so you can adjust it to any flame until it shuts off. one other thing I noticed is that I tested it out after it sitting for 20 years and filled the reservoir but emptied the tank and noticed the reservoir holds 2 hours alone so if you filled the reservoir then filled the tank to capacity it would last 14 hours straight not only 12!!

Thank you so much for posting this video! I have just received one of these to use in my drafty, poorly insulated, 1,000 sq. ft. rental cottage built in 1950 that is all electric. The main heat source is a window unit heat pump in the back bedroom - which made that room suffocating but did not heat the rest of the house at all. I supplemented with space heaters in the bathroom, living room and kitchen and ended up with 3-4 months of electric bills of $200 - $300 - and the house never got above 52F on any one day! I am hoping this will be a more economical alternative this winter - which is projected to be almost as bad as it was last winter here in Atlanta.

I used to have this exact model several years ago. it worked fine and the electric ignition worked fine but it always had an odor to it whether I used clear or red kerosene. the big round 23000 BTU Dyna-Glo or any other 23000 BTU round heater is better at not smelling although it uses more fuel but it will definitely heat a larger home.

What a great video. I bought one of these heaters because of your vid. Let me tell you about it. After the big flood in Calgary last summer I couldn't find a place to rent so I bought a 33' fifthwheel trailer to live in. It has 2 propane furnaces and a 5200 btu propane catylitic heater. I thought I was set for whatever winter could throw at me, but when the temp dropped to -31 in a zero visibility blizzard I found out that propane doesn't flow that well when I needed it the most and my furnaces wouldn't ignite. So I bought one of these heaters at Canadian tire (brand name Kero World, but identical to your Dyna Glo, for $260). I experienced the same problems you had, but thanks to your vid I found that if I light it with only 12 clicks up instead of all the way up on the wick, the flame will be almost perfect and I am able to adjust it just right within the limited amount of movement on the control knob. I was delighted to find that I was able to run the heater for 17 hours and still have some fuel (about 1/8) left in the tank. I started with one roof vent open for ventilation but after a couple hours the temp climbed to 95f and I had to open another one to let some heat escape. One thing I really like about this heater is that the heat output is very directional, so I have several options on where to put it as opposed to a heater that has 360 degree output that would have to be placed in the middle of the limited amount of floorspace I have available. I have the trailer in a wide open field on the prairie with no skirting or other protection from the wind and cold, and this heater keeps the place warm and toasty, all by itself, in the worst Canadian winter conditions. The only downside is that 1k kerosene costs $26 for a 2 gallon jug. Thank you for posting this high quality and comprehensive video. Now, could you do another on how to replace the wick? Thank you. I have since discovered that by having a troublelight in the propane tank compartment, the propane will work to 25 below. This is a work in progress. Now I'm going to investigate some insulation improvements. I'm glad I have the Kero heater for back-up when it gets really ugly, and I'm freezing my ass off cause the propane doesn't work..

For your information the spiralmetal on the burner is a handle which you can use to take the burner of and to replace it!! This way you prevent burning your hands or braking the delicate glas!

I would recommend getting an extra wick or two to put back. If you get a bad batch of Kerosene or get water in it, you don't want to be trying to find a wick during a power outage/storm. And if you get a bad wick it will put out fume so strong you can stand it and start giving you headaches, etc. I get mine at Walmart, for $9. I do all of my heating with Kerosene and Wood Stove. I have one like this, but and older one, and one of the big round ones as well.

I've had this exact model heater for about 20 years now. It still works and I'm running it as I type this. A long time ago my furnace went out and my wife and I heated on this model at night (we'd run the larger round 23k but one during the day). We heated our 1950s 900 sq foot house with this successfully for an entire year. Take care of the heater and it will take care if you. I dry burn the wick about once per month and change the wick about about every other year. Unfortunately yes they do smell a little especially when you first light it or extinguish it. You get used to it after a while... it's a smell that just comes with the territory of burning kerosene. My ignitor went out the first year (1999) and I've been lighting it with matches ever since. Use undyed kerosene if you can. That red dyed crap will crud up your wick really fast and cause excessive smoking.

I just bought one just like yours and I have to light it with a match as well. It lit one time,but the second time I had to light it with a match.

I bought a similar model for emergencies. Now we use it all the time for extra warmth.

I have used one of these for a couple years in my house and the battery ignition takes time. Just hold it in maybe 10 to 15 seconds and it will start. I didn't hear if you checked your battery. You can see the ignitor glow if it is working properly with a good battery.. Good video, I gave you a thumbs up! Another thing is these can rust up quickly if left outside...

Here in the south of Chile I am totally dependable on my woodstove which is the most common way of heating up a house! Many people also use keroseneheaters and the reason why I bought one this weak was because it is easy to rapidly heat up the house when during the day the house heats up because of the sun! In springtime or autum it is not efficient to heat up the house burning wood as because once your stove is hot the outside temperature rises so high you will have to open up all your windows not to sufficate of the high temperature! So then it is better to use a small keroseneheater for one or two hours or when you have to start a fire in the woodstove!

I have one of these. and when i first used it i only had it on for about 10 min before i shut it off because of the terrible smell. 1-2 years later i got it back out and tried it again. accidentally lit it too soon before the wic absorbed enough kerosene so it burned the wick a little, turned black at top a little less than 1/4 inch. hit the shut off almost immediately. went back later when it was saturated and lit it, and now there is barely any smell at start up and it dissipates quickly, Works great now.

Great video! I just bought a kero world heater made in 1999. I know this heater can almost buy alcohol but, was new in the box. It has the same rocket brand batteries and everything except says kero world not dyno glow. AND YES THE Lighter works but, like mentioned in another post only adjust the wick to the top of the lighter, think of a campfire...you don’t put the match to the middle of tinder but the edges. I hate the HEAT MATE kerosene heater compared to this one. Better quality and combustion!! Mine is S. Korean made vs China for the Heat Mate and that I believe is the difference

These are nice emergency heaters but I like the ones you can put a pot on top and fill it with water to humidify the air...does a lot to make you feel better in the winter and keep you from getting sick. Also you can actually cook on them. I use to put a pressure cooker on mine years ago and make stews that would last for days. You do have to be careful but that is true with any gas appliance...bar none! Electrical too! Always...you have to be safe as possible. My house is old and has 9 foot ceilings is 2 stories so all these things you have to take into account.

Ha mine was stored in the garage for 8 yrs and I just pulled it out and the ignition worked even with the batteries I had left in it.

Unfortunately (fortunately?) I don't intend to use it enough to ever need to replace the wick, so I won't be able to show that part. It does come with instructions and a pretty good exploded view diagram of the internals in the manual which I imagine would be pretty handy if one had to do a wick replacement.

Just picked up a 10000 btu Radiant Kerosene heater. Last winter, here in the Catskills, we had power outage after power outage and nearly froze to death. Almost impossible to get anyone to put in a wood stove or an electrician up here with the building boom that's going on, so, I'm hoping this will do the trick. Kerosene is almost 60 bucks for a 5 gallon container at the cheapest big box store - Tractor Supply. I haven't checked out the local NY gas stations yet. Thanks for this video.

I own one of these. It satisfies my needs. You may find that the igniter has a sweet spot. It when activated should glow quite brightly. Smashing it into the wick will result in a red glow and smoldering light after a bit. Smelly! As I stated should glow near as bright as a flashlight. A gentle brush at the wick should be all that's needed when the wick is clean. Longer though when the wick begins to foul. Clean then. My two cents worth. Enjoy. Tis the season.

Your supposed to adjuste it till you see the two devil horns on the top edge, this is the perfect adjustments for it. Also look at the sides of the heater it shows a photo of flame hight, don't worry about the flame not going out, it just part of the breaking in

Push the ignition switch on, and THEN adjust the wick up to meet it, at the top of the edge. It should fire right off...then put the "top-hat" in place. Hope this helps, great video.

I think the metal bar on the fronside might be for pulling it around a bit when you want to move it to another place like sliding it a bit from side to side!!!

I started with my dyna glo in ND and now it is the only way we heat in SC no more heat pump bills and yes 15 years later still the only way to heat. Keep it clean give it respect stay warm we do not worry bout kero price it has paid for itself over and over excellent vid dyna glow👍

I just bought one of these at a hardware store in California as they were selling it as 'inventory overstock' because they're being outlawed in California. I guess it normally retailed for 230 bucks and with all the discounts and it being out of Box I got it for $35. The Fuel is about $12 a gallon but I've used it two nights so far and I actually have to turn it all the way down or almost off or it makes the room too hot that it's in so I might try using an oscillating fan to distribute the heat more evenly. It has a really weird start up and shut down procedure that seems kind of dangerous until you realize what to expect! Otherwise it's worth every penny!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

I just bought this heater and did the initial first burn outdoors as per the owner's manual. Burn #2 inside the house went very well and it burned properly for 4 hours. Burn #3 has been a disaster. On the lowest setting there is a yellow flame burning high over the top of the burner, with the knob setting to the lowest position. Looking at the wick there were a few bits of char on the wick that brushed off with a gently applied soft toothbrush. Today is Saturday so I can't talk with the manufacturer's customer service until after the weekend. I bought this on Amazon and if i can't figure this out I will return it for a replacement unit or refund. Your video was very good and while I did not have any problem with the ignitor working, this problem was unexpected and yours is the only good video on yourtube about this model heater.

the Fire Dept. at my Brother's place told him absolutely never in the house but even with a crack in the opening of a window, it should be safe. I use this same model during the Ice Storm of '98 here in Quebec and found it great aside from a Co2 detector is there a problem

Good review. I've also kept kerosene heaters in storage for emergency heat for years. First was an upright convection type. Second I purchased (after donating the other to a needy couple) was this exact radiant unit. I've not really used it in six years because I installed a wood stove for backup heat for the central unit. (That, incidently, became my primary heat source shortly after using it.) The igniter on mine works perfectly. Bummer that yours did not. The biggest advantage with this unit is that it is comfortable to move around. The radiant unit was not. I don't run these at bedtime. About an hour before bed, I remove the fuel can and let the heater deplete the internal reservoir a bit. At bed time, I just carry the whole almost depleted unit outside and let it finish burning out on the porch. That keeps the smell out of the house. It does stink things up if you just push the extinguish button.

The wick is too high for the electric ignition. Mine is the same unit made by KeroWorld. If the ignitor is touching the side of the wick, it won't light. It has to be touching the top of the wick and it will work just fine.

Love my Red Stone 10,000 BTU. Boiler went out the night before so the 10,000 kept the house a decent 63 last night when it was 25. I Have 4 heaters now. Little overkill but I just like having back-up heat. (2) 23,000 units, a 17,000 and my 10,000 which is the one I use the most. The one 23,000 and the 17,000 I just picked up from the curb so I figured why not, it's a free $150+ heater. The one worked straight from the curb the other one I just replace the wick since it was pretty ugly and completely dried out.

Yes..when the torch hits the upperside of the wig there it will light easier because of more vapour and airmixture! My heater has a simple metal topplate with possibility to place a pot or pan to heat water or so and becomes very hot! In your heater this is isolated!

My ignition didn't work to well either. I had to bend the little elecrode wire closer to the wick. I have mine on a boat, use all winter passed F our years. Have it sat under porthole which is always open about an inch of so.

I have a Red Stone barrel style kerosene heater about 12,000 ish BTU not 100 percent sure but this passed winter was living at my buddy's house and it was close to the negative numbers one night and I wanted to try the heater so I turned the house heat completely off, fired up the kero heater. Cracked 3 large windows in the same room as the heater, waited about an hour before going to bed, LEFT THE HEATER ON til morning. Woke up, place smelt like kerosene but I didn't feel woozy or anything like that. No trouble breathing whatsoever, with ventilation that whole main floor was every bit of 70 degrees give or take. So I was very impressed. You can light cigarettes off of these too. CRANK THE KNOB though

What is the best wick for kerosene heaters?

I have this same kerosene heater; I've had it for about four years now. I use this heater for supplementary heat. I live in an old drafty house, that uses broiler heat. I will turn the thermostat on low, like 65, and use the kerosene heat. Yes, it has the odor at the beginning, and I have had problems lighting the wick, but overall the heater works well. I appreciate this video, just to know that I did everything according to the manufacturers direction. On the cool fall nights, when the temperature is not lower than 40 degrees, I will use the heater to heat the upstairs. I am not ready to turn on the heat yet. It gets comfortable, and definitely takes the chill off. Thank you for this informative video. It was very helpful.

I have exactly the same model only under the brand "Kero World". Love it. Use it all the time when the temps get low and I was a blast of real heat. Also great in the mornings as I turn the heat way down at night. It's March 1st and -19 where I am today!

I used one of these about 35 years ago and that worked great for the 3 years we had it. I live in an old house with not air or heat. Ordered this same one, as I was familiar with it and it came today (free shipping through Walmart). I gave it the one hour outside (brrr), it lit right away and I brought it in. It's heating up my home slowly but surely. You're supposed to have a low, yellow flame.

I have found that if I dry burn the wick after every third tank with the wick that came with it that I didn't get as much build up to dry burn off!

What you need in home is a kerocine heater that say's dubble clean.check on KZfaq the Zibro Kamin rca-66, the turbo is in the that white glas.I use the Toyostove TB-85 that is the Zibro 105 btw.

I've got the same heater heats my whole double wide trailer. Picked it up for $25 from a friend. I use K1 kerosene it's odorless and safe to breathe. Don't use pump kerosene in it. It's apart now putting a new wick in it while I'm soaking all the parts in vinegar to remove the oxidation.

I have the 23,00/ but Dyna-Glo kerosene heater and I use it as supplemental heat and power outages. It's been a very good unit. After I light it, I wait about 10 minutes and turn the wick adjustment down to the low setting, which saves kerosene and makes the proper flame height. Have you done any updated video's on the heater? I'm thinking of getting one of be these 10,000 btu units. Thanks!

I would like to know the surface temp on the top of the unit in f. I've also been seeing folks run these on diesel fuel, some are adding a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol. The claim is that if you use a pure cotton wick you will not have carbon buildup with the alcohol additive. I have a heater named envirotemp. I've never ran it and don't have a wick for it at this time. I am curious about running this under a thermoelectric generator (around 45 Watts) but I need to know what the surface temperature is at the top of the heater, before I even begin my experiment. I'll be very grateful if you could help me.

I have a similar type and a cheap Chinese green house type heater/stove. Both are excellent for both heat and cooking on. You just need to be a little more safety conscious with the Chinese one as it has no safety cut off if knocked over. I never use the electric ignition

I have a Sears model like this that cost me about 40.00 years ago. Now this type run 150.00 and they are great. As for people being cheap getting the dyed that comment is bs. The government is greedy causing the dye to be put into off road because of truckers mixing it with diesel to save money, so the opted to put dye in it. It is still 1-K just has a little dye. I’ve used it in my heater and oil lamps and as long as you are not burning a high flame it is fine. The worst part is how K1 cost less to make and reflected that in the past, now it is more expensive. I can remember paying 60 some cents per gal when regular gas was about 1.70 a gal and diesel in the 1.20-1.30 range. Many people mixed 50/50 fuel oil to kero for their home heating also. It saved quite a bit in the heating bill, but too many companies couldn’t have that being they are all publicly traded and want more and more.

I think that we have had to "crunch" the carbon deposits at the top of the wick one time in 15 years. We use clear k1.

can this heater be placed against the wall also is the kerosene at the ac&t ok to use and will it have a smell

The pump works great. i tried the funnel option and spilled it all over too. I store the pump is a small plastic trash can like you would have in the bathroom or bedroom with papertowels at the bottom and I have it standing up in a propped postion. When you said you were gonna use a funnel I cringed, lol.

However, I miss that heater, even with the start up stink, the thing warms a drafty house extremely well. The place I live now was built in the 40's. "Energy Star? That some kinda airplane er somethin' sunny"? :) Still love the place though. Wish you lived closer. I'd buy that from you if you ever sold it heheh. They're kinda hard to get around her for some reason.

Hay buddy, 10-year update. With the NG prices soaring this winter can you give an update on the 1-K heater?

I am sure that you have it all figured out after 11 years but I am waiting to see if the flames rise above the cylincer because mine do and I do not know of that is normal yet.

Very good idea to light it outside first then carefully carry it indoors then I turn it off outside because it does stink. If you do that there great. Good video. Thanks.

ours [brand new] was working great until just now...(and it's freezing in here, even with our regular furnace on)...and now suddenly the ignition won't work ...so I have to use matches ...is there any specific information about lighting it up with matches ?
