What a coincidence! I used the Kobalt today at work! My POU for it is glove compartment MT for days when I'm not carrying my Leatherman Wave, and the chore at hand is not worth getting my real tool bag out of the back of the car. I bought it one day while visiting elderly family. A couple chores needed done, but my tools weren't with me. Rather than buy duplicate real tools, I got this and made it work. Agree about the flathead drivers. Like the spring-loaded pliers! Case is pretty good.

I have two of these, can't beat it for the cost and warranty with a light duty mind set use of this tool. If it breaks within proper use ( not prying with the blade) you walk into Lowes without a receipt or box and they will replace it with no questions asked.

I actually have this. Another downside to it if you've used it often enough is that you'll find yourself getting pinched while opening the tools. I have just above average sized hand and it took me awhile to get used to positioning so I wouldn't pinch myself. A few times have drew blood so be warned about that.

May I say that 5 out of 10 would be more fair? Mainly because unlock most other cheap tools this one has good pliers, good saw, decent file, good can opener, functional drivers, good sheath and outstanding price compared to the Winchester,Stanley and Dollar Store tools for the same price, for 15.00 you generally get junk while this is obviously not, either way this is a great review

Dude... Before I started watching your vids I can't believe how many of MT's I've eyed at different hardware stores and am SO glad I never wasted my money on those. I'd rather pay a little more for the REAL (not perceived) value that the "value" MT's advertise. Thanks Nutn for your hard work in keeping us informed bro!

One of the you get what you pay for tools. You get average abilities for those who don't require the quality of Leatherman or Victorinox. I own a few lower quality MTs and they work good for some run of the mill work around the house but for harder use I prefer my Leathermans. Keep up the good work.

@apocolypse1022 it was actually the secondary blade in the mt. He dulled the large main blade by trying to chip away at the rock. The small secondary blade was the only thing sharp enough to cut. Good movie on the whole thing "127 Hours"

I have used many different multi-tools but weight is first thing to consider for me. I got a victoria-nox tool and never carried it around because of its heavy weight. I know some of you guys really need a tool with lots of different functions, but if you are not a construction worker, I would recommend using Leatherman Freestyle. Super light but of course you have to sacrifice some functions.

Honestly, I think the $15 could be better spent elsewhere. But as you said, a loaner, maybe a tool that sits in a car survival kit, etc. I'm not strapping it on my belt day in and day out. In those other POU's I'm sure it'd work fine. Good honest review (as always).

i have the Kobalt multi-tool and i agree with this completely, i got mine for free in package as a present. not knocking it to bad but its one of those disposable commodities if it gets screwed up. and with moderate to heavy use the belt loop rips right off i almost lost mine in a cement mixer. but it handled opening bags, and all the crap i put it through. great in a pinch but not overall reliable 6.3 out of 10 on my scale

I'm liking those hollow-ground saw blades, great idea. That being said, I've found that I don't buy anything that brags about it's steel being "stainless" or "surgical". Those are gimmick words designed to mislead people about the quality levels, which I've found are pretty low. 8Cr13MoV or AUS8A is about the lowest blade quality I'll go normally because I don't want my blade to dull before I've finished what I needed it for. You'd be better off with a SAK and a pair of pliers or something.

Usually, I stay away from the second tier hand tools sold at Lowes and Home Depot. They always try to mimic the 'real' tools at half the price or less. That said, some things they can't possibly screw up. Like a flat bar (pry bar). In those instances I will go with a second tier tool-maker.

Blade steel - almost certainly 400 series stainless, probably 420, and of course the heat treatment makes all the difference. I agree that as a back-up or B.O.B. option this is pretty decent. However, if I could afford the Leatherman I'd go that route. My personal choice(s), EDC - Gerber Diesel (work related uses), Wilderness carry - Swiss Tool X (nothing else compares)

With the Leatherman Wingman and Sidekick, there's really no need for an informed buyer to purchase anything less than a great quality MultiTool. The Leathermans cost $10 more, have much more safety and functionality, and support USA jobs and manufacturing.

With any of these mulitools where the blades don't lock, if you fold out the blade then close the handles the blade can only close back slightly. I have a similar cheap one in my car it has come in handy a few times.

Material/metal is 420 stainless as printed on my Sheffield multi tool, so I am assuming the Kobalt is the exact same, because it has all the same tools, size, weight, looks (to an extent), and the overall feel and performance is the same in my paper and cardboard cutting to see if the edges start dulling. Both dulled after around 230 cuts, and afterward the cardboard showed some resistance to both. That's not too bad for a cheapo MT.

I've got this, got it yes bc it was cheap and I was in need of something in a hurry. The knife is moves side to side and I have to constantly keep sharpening it. And the drivers don't work for poo. Like I said I was needing something in a hurry, if I could I would get a leatherman, but funds are limited. Out of a five star I would give it maybe two.

There is another use for cheap multi-tools - and knives. if you occassionally need one at work, you can leave them in your drawer, work vehicle, whatever, without too much worry. They may still get stolen (some people will steal anything. I used to have chewing gum stolen a lot. Then I left some laxative gum in there. The thefts stopped after that for some reason, lol), but at least it won'r hurt your pocket too much.

True story: I was few hours in the dessert shooting and I had a front sight post that was screwed up and needed to be removed. It was stuck on so tight that it BROKE a Leatherman kick driver! Because i'm nuts i carry a few MT's in my truck. It broke ANOTHER mt from Lowes, but guess what saved the day? a cheap Winchester mt from walmart was the only MT that could cut it. Moral of the story.. have backups and don't dismiss the cheap tools because sometimes their materials are a little stronger ;)

this is an OEM multitool, it comes in many different shapes and colours but they all share the same pliers and tools. they suck. even at the price. ruined mine in 2 days. yes, 2 days. the pliers are made out of steel thats softer than butter, the tools dont lock, and if you think thats not a problem, believe me, its a nightmare and the knife is dangerous to use without the lock.

I purchased a Gerber Mini Tool Vice. It's not the most impressive tool in the mid west. A lot of the faults are the same as the one you are reviewing. I like Gerber products. I got it to put in my backpack. I got a Leatherman a few years ago and like that. It's not going in pack. Sure enough if I did I would loose it. The mini's should work for the purpose I got mine. Again a datapoint on its "Durability", I'll be more specific. I've had 3 of these style/rebranded tools. I've had the screws fall out in regular carry, I'm sure you know how annoying it is to stick a screw back into a jacked up multitool(if you find it). I've also had the locking bars on the pliers bend outward, rendering them useless given they don't close anymore, I can see this happening to any of the other tools under "hard" use. Piece of junk that I wish I'd stop getting as a present haha.
